It fell to Lincoln to locate meaning in these events, a meaning worthy of such sacrifice. Judged under scrutiny of subsequent generations, the president did not disappoint. This war, in Lincoln’s formulation, was to test whether a nation such as America, “conceived in liberty” and dedicated to the equality of humankind, “can long endure.” The only fitting tribute to the sacrifice of the dead, he argued, was for the living to resolve that “this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”1 America, Lincoln had written to Congress a year earlier, was the world’s “last best hope.”2 Not sixty years later another American president, standing on the precipice of another catastrophic war, sent another rousing message to the Congress. Woodrow Wilson, in what became known as his “War Message,” called the nation to arms on battlefields thousands of miles away in a war that could make the world “safe for democracy.”3 Both presidents believed that America, in the providence of God, existed for the sake of the world and that their respective wars factored directly into the success or failure of its global purpose. But Lincoln’s war was a war of preservation, to protect the purity of the nation’s luminous example and to ensure that this example would survive intact. What had emerged during those intervening decades was a notion I shall call messianic interventionism; and it is the burden of this dissertation to show that its emergence had a great deal to do with an often forgotten little war with Spain in 1898. EUGENE CLAY ITH its violent images of heavenly and earthly combat, the book of Revelation has been criticized for promoting a vengeful and Wdistorted version of Christ’s teachings. Gerd Lüdemann, for example, has attacked the book as part of the “dark side of the Bible,” and Jonathan Kirsch believes that the pernicious influence of Revelation “can be detected in some of the worst atrocities and excesses of every age, including our own.”1 Yet, surprisingly, nonviolent pacifists have also drawn on the Apocalypse for encouragement and support. This was especially true for generations of Russian Spiritual Christians (dukhovnye khristiane), a significant religious minority whose roots trace at least as far back as the 1760s, when the first “spirituals” (dukhovnye) were arrested and tried in Russia’s southern provinces of Tambov and Voronezh. Although they drew upon apocalyptic martial imagery, the Spiritual Christians were pacifists, some of whom came to identify themselves with the Woman Clothed in the Sun of Revelation 12. Douglass’ farm stood on the outskirts of town, amongst sparsely settled hills not far from the Genesee River. The Douglasses did not sell their Alexander Street house. They held it as the first of several real estate investments, which were the foundation of financial security for them as for many enterprising African American families. 71 The Douglasses’ second residence consisted of a farm with a framed dwelling, orchard and barn. It examines the career trajectories, rhetoric, and policy agendas of these congressmen in order to determine how effectively they represented the wants and needs of the black electorate. The dissertation argues that black congressmen effectively represented and articulated the interests of their constituents. They did so by embracing a policy agenda favoring strong civil rights protections and encompassing a broad vision of economic modernization and expanded access for education. Furthermore, black congressmen embraced their role as national leaders and as spokesmen not only for their congressional districts and states, but for all African Americans throughout the South.

ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the apartheid debate from an international perspective. Positioned at the methodological intersection of intellectual and diplomatic history, it examines how, where, and why African nationalists, Afrikaner nationalists, and American liberals contested South Africa’s place in the global community in the 1960s. It uses this fight to explore the contradictions of international politics in the decade after second-wave decolonization. The apartheid debate was never at the center of global affairs in this period, but it rallied international opinions in ways that attached particular meanings to concepts of development, order, justice, and freedom. As such, the debate about South Africa provides a microcosm of the larger postcolonial moment, exposing the deep-seated differences between politicians and policymakers in the First and Third Worlds, as well as the paradoxical nature of change in the late twentieth century. This dissertation tells three interlocking stories. First, it charts the rise and fall of African nationalism. For a brief yet important moment in the early and mid-1960s, African nationalists felt genuinely that they could remake global norms in Africa’s image and abolish the ideology of white supremacy through U.N.

I have not attempted to comprehensively cover works of nonfiction or the arts generally but, once more, I have made— and this time, a fair number of—exceptions by way of providing a taste of the requisite material. So, apart from the constraints of most of my other bibliographies: books, in English, these particular constraints are intended to keep the bibliography to a fairly modest length (around one hundred pages). This compilation is far from exhaustive, although it endeavors to be representative of the available literature, whatever the influence of my idiosyncratic beliefs and 1 preferences. I trust the diligent researcher will find titles on particular topics or subject areas by browsing carefully through the list. I welcome notice of titles by way of remedying any deficiencies.     The Protestant Roots of American Civil Religion Glenn A. Moots Northwood University Not all civil religion is a threat to civil society, nor should civil re- ligion be discouraged in all circumstances. But when civil religion invites a sense of national exceptionalism that undermines pru- dent Augustinian limits on state power, it threatens civil society and ordered liberty. This article presents historical and theological background of Reformed Protestantism or “Calvinism” in America and evaluates its virtues and vices in the development of Anglo- American political theology and civil religion. The great challenge of America can be summarized in terms of the covenant theology of Reformed Protestantism. Does America enjoy the same cov- enant relationship as the church, an everlasting and unconditional covenant? Or is America in a relationship with God governed only by general providence and a conditional covenant? These were theological questions that eventually came to form the dilemma of American civil religion and its growing sense of divine mission. Introduction: Christian America? Is America a “Christian nation”? Alexis de Tocqueville recog- nized the role of Christianity in America’s dominant ethos and argued that it is the faithful spirit of Americans that keeps us from democratic despotism, withdrawn individualism, and material- ism. G. K. Chesterton called America a nation with the soul of a GLENN A. At the same time, some authors also note that the term “American exceptionalism” itself was born in a specific discourse within U.S. Communism, and, for a period, it was primarily understood with reference to the peculiar causes behind the absence of a strong socialist movement in the United States. The connection between this original meaning and the later usage is not fully explored; often it is assumed that “exceptionalism” existed before the label was created as the idea is traced back to the founding of the American nation or even to the colonial period.
