PROJECTIONS ID FILM INVITES YOU TO ENTER TO WIN FEST TICKETS TO THE PREMIERE OF O ct. 8-10 @ Little Tokyo Courtesy of Air Doll movie

byDIC CAN E WINTERS Air Doll is the Centerpiece film of ID Film Fest.

A few years ago, the prestigious and elitist Academy Awards was swept up and held in a tizzy by three syllables that have come to forge many overly used and often sexually encoded meanings over the five years since its inception into our cinematic vernacular. “Brokeback-style” or “finding your Ennis” have become commonly accepted phrases that, however politically incorrect, also have brought a measure of acceptance and understanding from a harsh and judgmental suburban America who were once scared of the so-called infestation of homosexuals and the subsequent conversion of family members and neighbors from gay to straight that could be incurred. It’s ridiculous. I know that, as does any person with a functional brain and access to modern-thinking films and works of literature, thereby nearly anything produced after the turn of the millennium. Brokeback Mountain was explicit in its depiction of homosexual love and the consequences of said amorous affections in Wyoming in 1963, which might as well have been 2005 for the reaction it received. The 1960s were a radical time for film history. The MPAA under president Jack Valenti had killed the old Production Code that dictated Hollywood etiquette for several decades and incorporated a new system of classifying and rating films. Just approving films with a seal and merely suggesting to audiences that a film contained mature content was not flying with conservative-minded and religious organizations that went out to see Elia Kazan’s Splendor in the Grass or the viciously violent Bonnie and Clyde or Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which was groundbreaking in its use of profanity and sexual implications. Brokeback Mountain was the right film at the right time, feeding to the country’s inability to suppress any longer its rising throngs of progressive individuals who were sick of not asking and not telling. Subsequent films that were inspired by or green lighted because of the Oscar hit include Milk and most recently Howl, based on Allen Ginsberg’s controversial poetry and the court trials that ensued. This may be a far-fetched association, but I would like to think that this is the age of gender liberation as well as intercultural and transracial acceptance. Ang Lee (finally) won the Academy Award for Best Director for Brokeback Mountain, marking the first Asian American to take home the prize. He was nominated for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2001, but was beat out by Steven Soderbergh. The iconic Japanese director Akira Kurosawa was never so highly honored by the academy. Lee emigrated from Taiwan to America in his mid-20s to pursue film after fulfilling his duties to the Republic of China’s military service. He spent much of the ’80s at home with his kids, writing scripts and praying he would make films. Finally, he managed to find funding for three consecutive films known as the Father Knows Best trilogy. They were family-driven dramas centered around the patriarchal struggle of relating to grown children, as well as to finding an identity as an Asian American who speaks both languages and needs both cultures to survive. So by the time he made Brokeback, Lee was a veteran to the craft, a master who could recreate Jane Austen’s ultra-British Sense and Sensibility or modern American author Rick ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13 AT 7:30 PM Moody’s The Ice Storm with equally impressive dexterity. I met an interesting and sexy married woman. She said she was no longer in love with her husband. We had great sex and talked about all the things we had in common. Initially all contact was from her, however a few months ago, she stopped. I called her and she said she was busy and would call me back, but didn’t. I want to contact her again but not in a needy, “little-boy-style” of someone who wants his toy again. We never talked about a serious commitment. I don’t understand how she could disappear after an intimate and intense six months. —Marcus You played with fire, and you got burned. How can you expect a married woman to talk about a commitment when she already has one? I understand you want closure. The best way to do that is to send her a brief e-mail saying you enjoyed your time together and understand that it’s over and that’s OK. Wish her the best and leave it at that. Do NOT ask for an explanation or for her to call you. If she wants to do that, she’ll do it without you asking. I hope in the future you will only date women who are single – it makes things less complicated. Write to Lucia at theartoflove.net. Courtesy of Paladin

With a headliner like TOOL it’s hard not to pull off a large crowd that’s ready to party … So this year Epicenter had to outdo itself and it brought Eminem, KISS and the return of Blink 182 and Bush. Well, wait, I don’t know if it was a return for Bush, but they are back anyway. With everything that the second day of this festival had in store, even the over-hyped return of a band that doesn’t really work as adults, it was about night one. The heat was blistering, but the grounds still held a bit over 20,000 people. Not a sell-out crowd by any means, but enough people to raise some hell for their hero rapper. Eminem went on stage after his bitter rival Everlast performed with his band House of Pain on the tiny second stage across the packing lot. The fans packed in as close as they could get to the stage where Eminem was going to perform and upon his “return” the crowd went nuts. However, the Eminem show had some kinks that kept it from being that kind of performance that signals a true recovery. Halfway through the set, Eminem started to lose control of his voice and at times got quiet, allowing the backing tracks to seep through. His cockiness seemed to show through the frustration, but in the end, the crowd was happy. The crowd was so satisfied with Eminem’s performance that about 40 percent departed when he was done and left a very subdued crowd for KISS. The classic rockers took the stage and proved why they are legends, but the sun-beat crowd offered little support for their effort and with a restricted performance set time the band was backed into a corner. The fans got what they wanted on some level, but it felt like the overall feel was satisfactory from the comments coming from the fans as they left the venue. Perhaps it was the 108-degree temperature or just the steep ticket price at over $80 for one day that the crowd didn’t like.
