Las Vegas Rapper Dizzy Wright Signs to Blue Star Records Fans Show Overwhelming Response to Las Vegas Rapper Dizzy Wright “Solo Dolo” Release on Funk Volume For Immediate Release February 9, 2012 (Las Vegas, NV) On January 30, 2012 Dizzy Wright, the newest member to join the Funk Volume family released a video for the first song off his forthcoming “SmokeOut Conversations” debut album. The song which is titled “Solo Dolo” has received an overwhelming response from the young hip-hop lyricist fans. In just nine days the video has received over 130,000+ views collectively from the combined websites in which the video is currently featured on. The main website YouTube; currently has more than 125,000 views. Other sites that have featured the Las Vegas raised rapper include: www.hotnewhiphop.com, www.xxlmag.com, www.hiphopdx.com, www.fatboyradionyc.com and www.thisishiphopmusic.com. It comes as no surprise that Dizzy Wright is finally starting to get the recognition he deserves since he has been in the game since he was 10 years old and he is now 21. He started out as a youth reporter for a local youth entertainment paper known as “Just for Kids” interviewing major celebrities. After a few years of doing that he began recording songs with his younger brother. When he was in high school he branched out on his own and began making songs on his own. His accomplishments are many, his story is long, he is definitely not an overnight success. Dizzy Wright has been grinding for a very, very long time. He has been working hard and he has been extremely dedicated and motivated. In late 2011 he had been spending some time in California with Hopsin, SwizZz and DJ Hoppa, then in November 2011, the announcement came that he had signed with Funk Volume and they immediately began making moves. First there were shows in the Midwest. Then Dizzy shared a very private moment of his life with his fans on Facebook and Twitter. He announced that he had met his dad for the very first time in his life while on a tour date in Detroit, Michigan. He received an outpouring of support from his fans. He came back to Vegas and wrote “Solo Dolo” a song that was partially inspired by his meeting with his dad as he realized that they shared a lot of things in common. Fans of Dizzy who are familiar with his music know that he has always said that he has “trust issues” so they should be able to really relate to the lyrics in this song when he say’s “I can’t trust’em so I’m ridin’ Solo Dolo.” New fans should know that this is “Reality Music” at its finest, that is what Dizzy Wright is all about, the truth, that’s it and that’s all and if you can’t handle the truth you better turn his sh** off. In December 2011, Funk Volume released the Funk Volume 2012 video featuring Hopsin, Dizzy Wright, SwizZz and DJ Hoppa http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfJj88Oq3nA&feature=related. The video currently has over 227,000 views. Dizzy Wright’s new mixtape “SmokeOut Conversations” is due to be released in early March 2012. Although Funk Volume has just confirmed that because of the overwhelming response to him right now, and the extremely high anticipation that is being given; this will be Dizzy Wright’s debut album on Funk Volume. So this means, fans get your wallets ready because this one won’t be free after all. we will all have to pay for “SmokeOut Conversations”. However, we can’t complain, after all Dizzy Wright has given us five mix tapes for free. Since he is an avid updater on twitter, check out Dizzy Wright on twitter for his latest moves @dizzywright and on Facebook/DizzyWrightBro. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

JASIAH BIO The era of SoundCloud rap ushered in a golden age of teenage DIY artists who make music on their terms. To grow from the depths of SoundCloud to the mainstream stage, Jasiah used the audio distribution platform to connect with his fans, promoting his music as much as possible. When his self-produced, self-written songs started gaining traction online, it was a stroke of luck that one of those fans was Ugly God. Jasiah remembers when Ugly God Posted his “HAHAHAHAHA” freestyle on Soundcloud. “He was like, ‘The first time I open my DMs to listen to one of y’all wack ass rappers, and its actually a banger,’” He says with a laugh. The reaction was enough reassurance that he was on the right track. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Jasiah, 22, is unlike any rapper associated with the SoundCloud rap movement. He considers himself to be an artist who can transcend genres. This means he can excel in any category, whether its making screamo songs like “Case 19,” which features Tekashi 6ix9ine, or agro anthems like “Crisis” that contains a familiar Courage the Cowardly Dog sample. The record got him his first music video with hip-hop’s sought-after director Cole Bennett, who shared it on the influential Lyrical Lemonade YouTube page. With over eight million views thus far, it’s clear Jasiah’s music is making an impact. “When I first dropped it, I only had 800 followers on SoundCloud at the time. And it was going up. It had 48,000 plays,” he says.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS & SCIENCES “I THOUGHT ABOUT KILLING YOU”: CONSIDERING THE UTILITY OF RHETORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL CRITICAL APPROACHES TO KANYE WEST’S YE CORY N. STEINLE SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts and Sciences and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Communication Arts and Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Bradford Vivian Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Associate Teaching Professor in Communication Arts & Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT This paper examines the merits of intrinsic and extrinsic critical approaches to hip-hop artifacts. To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Each of these chapters aims to address the concerns of one of three guiding questions: which critical approaches prove most useful to the hip-hop consumer listening to this song? How can and should the listener construct meaning? Are there any improper ways to critique and interpret this song? Chapter 7 discusses the variance in each mode of critical analysis from Chapters 4, 5, & 6.

Formerly known as Dizzy D Flashy, The Jump Off Magazine named him the "Hottest Rapper in Las Vegas." During this time, he was promoting parties at the local teen club as a way to earn income and generate exposure for himself. He continued to receive even more exposure with his first performance at BET's 106 & Park on Wild Out Wednesday and won the competition! Up next came the New York Blaze the Stage with an invitation to perform.

One can describe his sound as southern, hovering somewhere in middle of a clash of rock, blues, and hip hop." -Poor Vida At 8 years old, the nickname "GOAT" was given to Justin by a childhood friend after watching Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. During a scene in medieval times, Bill says "how 'bout that gnarly ole' goat dude." Starting as a joke, it eventually stuck to Justin and never went away.
