Why? This is the fascinating, disturbing question that bestselling author Karen Armstrong addresses in her brilliant new book The Battle for God. Writing with the broad perspective and deep understanding of human spirituality that won huge audiences for A History of God, Armstrong illuminates the spread of militant piety as a phenomenon peculiar to our moment in history.Contrary to popular belief, fundamentalism is not a throwback to some ancient form of religion but rather a response to the spiritual crisis of the modern world. As Armstrong argues, the collapse of a piety rooted in myth and cult during the Renaissance forced people of faith to grasp for new ways of being religious--and fundamentalism was born. Armstrong focuses here on three fundamentalist movements: Protestant fundamentalism in America, Jewish fundamentalism in Israel, and Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt and Iran--exploring how each has developed its own unique way of combating the assaults of modernity.Blending history, sociology, and spirituality, The Battle for God is a compelling and compassionate study of a radical form of religious expression that is critically shaping the course of world history. Interesting information; not entirely accurate. Firstly, current times are not the first time that religion has been through a fundamentalist shift although she reports that it is. Secondly, she takes the word/opinion of other researchers who are prejudiced about the areas they report upon. That makes her book unreliable in the particulars but interesting information in general. Just pay attention to where she is getting the opinions she repeats, especially in the Middle East. The Battle for God By: KAREN ARMSTRONG (ed. Dr Walter G Tonetto) Synopsis: About 40 years ago popular opinion assumed that religion would become a weaker force and people would certainly become less zealous as the world became more modern and morals more relaxed. But the opposite has proven true, according to theologian and author Karen Armstrong, who documents how fundamentalism has taken root and grown in many of the world's major religions, such as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Even Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism have developed fundamentalist factions. Reacting to a technologically driven world with liberal Western values, fundamentalists have not only increased in numbers, they have become more desperate, claims Armstrong, who points to the Oklahoma City bombing, violent anti-abortion crusades, and the assassination of President Yitzak Rabin as evidence of dangerous extremes. Yet she also acknowledges the irony of how fundamentalism and Western materialism seem to urge each other on to greater excesses. To "prevent an escalation of the conflict, we must try and understand the pain and perception of the other side," she pleads. With her gift for clear, engaging writing and her integrity as a thorough researcher, Armstrong delivers a powerful discussion of a globally heated issue. Part history lesson, part wake-up call, and mostly a plea for healing, Armstrong's writing continues to offer a religious mirror and a cultural vision. 1 ALFRED A. • Political Economic Dimension of the Indonesian Fundamentalism)
Fundamentalism Versus Social Injustice FUNDAMENTALISM VERSUS SOCIAL INJUSTICE (Political Economic Dimension of the Indonesian Fundamentalism) Eduardus Lemanto* Department of Social Philosophy of People’s Friendship University of Russia Email*: [email protected] ABSTRACT Karen Armstrong in The Battle for God expresses her fear of the rise of fundamentalism. She alerts and takes a deep look at its horrific manifestations. She stresses that “ One of the most startling developments of the late twentieth century has been the emergence within every major religious tradition of militant piety popularly known as “fundamentalism"….Fundamentalists have gunned down worshippers in mosque, have killed doctors and nurses…have shots their president, and have even toppled a powerful government….Fundamentalists have no time for democracy, pluralism, religious toleration, peacekeeping, free speech….”1 Indonesia can be an “exact laboratory” to prove Armstrong’s concerns about fundamentalism, where there have been series of terrorist attacks and suicide bombings since 2000 that behooves the Indonesian stakeholders to giving their very eyes on the roots of the problem. There have been 552 acts of terror in 21 years since 2000.2 However, is fundamentalism solely rooted in the religious militant piety? The studies of the roots of fundamentalism are generally divided into two lines of thoughts. The first is those who admit the religious militant piety as the only root of fundamentalism. The other is those who take into account the problem of social injustice in the field of politics and economy as the foundation of the movement of the fundamentalists. This article is going to examine the second opinion of the absence of social justice and multidimensional approach of development at all level as the backbones and the determining factors of the emergence of the Indonesian fundamentalism.

  • The Role of Religion in Today's Conflict
The Role of Religion in Today’s Conflict.1 By Ms. Karen Armstrong As we are all agreed, the conflict between the Muslim world and the West is essentially political but on a popular level religion is seen as one of its root causes. Islam is regarded in the West as an essentially violent faith that impels worshippers to acts of terror and on the Muslim side claim to be inspired wholly by the Qur’an and the Shari’ah. Secularists sometimes regard all religion as essentially divisive and obscurantist. There is a symbiotic relationship between religion and contemporary politics: each influences and exacerbates each other. It is, therefore, essential that our report looks at this dimension of the current impasse, dispels misapprehensions, gives an accurate appraisal of the precise role of religion in the current crisis, and makes some practical recommendations for the future. • First, it is important to make it clear that none of the so-called “world religions” condones or encourages killing. My recent studies show that at their inception, they were all rooted in a disciplined rejection of violence. All promote the ideals of compassion, justice and respect for the sacred rights of the individual. This is no less true of Islam than of Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Confucianism or Daoism. • It is true, however, that all these faiths first developed in periods of great violence and that their scriptures often bear the marks of the warfare and aggression of their time. We see this clearly in the Jewish Scriptures, the New Testament and the Qur’an, which all contain passages that can and have been used by extremists to justify violence and intolerance.

ABSTRACT The Dilemma of Justice: How Religion Influences the Political Environment of Post-1948 Israel and Palestine Sasha A. Ross Thesis Chairperson: Marc H. Ellis, Ph.D. This thesis examines the historical context, ideological traditions, and structures of power that animated relations between Israeli Jews and Arab Palestinians during the twentieth century. Cognizant of the “prisms of pain” that have come to symbolize both Jewish and Palestinian identities, this thesis assumes that identities are in constant flux and are often determined by that which they negotiate against. Its first section considers some historical forces, specific inter-group events, and internal political tensions that intensified the early Jewish and Arab national projects against the British and later pitted each group against the other. The second section examines the values enshrined in the sacred texts of each monotheistic tradition and the extent to which such have influenced the political engagement between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It concludes that because religion can be used as a political tool of repression, a prophetic spirituality common to all three traditions is necessary for any sustainable project of social transformation and political reconciliation. Th i e s s e n An Island of Stability An Island of Stability the Islamic Revolution of Iran In 1979, the world was taken by surprise when the Iranian people revolted and the Dutch Opinion against their westernized ruling elite, and traded in the Shah for a radical Islamic republic ruled by the most senior Shiite cleric, ayatollah Khomeini. The Islamic revolution of Iran was a breaking point in history. It was the defining moment for Islam in the twentieth century and fuelled the Islamic confidence that has since then only grown. The roots of the revolution were deeply entrenched in the recent history of Iran, yet in the West, almost no one knew what was happening. The rise of ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic republic seemed to have come out of nowhere. Mark Thiessen In this book, historian Mark Thiessen (1982) tries to answer the most important questions of the Islamic revolution. What happened, and where An Island of Stability did it come from? This book explores the background of the revolution, and gives a detailed account of its course. It analyzes the rise of Khomeini, and his ideology. By studying the archives of the Dutch embassy in Tehran, Thiessen finally tries to find out about the way the Dutch mission experienced and interpreted the revolution, at a time when the outcome was not yet clear. The unwritten assumption is that there is something about Islam that makes it bloodier and more violence-prone than other religions. This dissertation seeks to investigate this assertion by considering incidents of Islamically motivated terrorism, violence, and war, and comparing them to examples of Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu bellicosity. In doing so, it aims to evaluate if religious violence is primarily the product of beliefs, doctrine and scripture, or if religious violence is the result of other factors

A CONGRUENCE OF INTERESTS: CHRISTIAN ZIONISM AND U.S. POLICY TOWARD ISRAEL, 1977-1998 Kyle M. Smith A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2006 Committee: Gary R. Hess, Advisor Judith Sealander ii Abstract Dr. Gary Hess, Advisor This thesis examines the phenomenon of political Christian Zionism and its influence on U.S. policy toward Israel from 1977 to 1998. While there is a vast literature on America Middle East policy and the relationship between the U.S. and Israel; relatively little attention has been given to the actions of Christian evangelicals on behalf of Israel. Motivated by an eschatological system called dispensationalism, these Christian Zionists supported Israel through a variety of activities, including direct lobbying at the congressional level. Forming alliances with the Jewish pro-Israel lobby and the Israeli Likud party, Christian Zionists were active in pressuring Congress to oppose arms sales to Arab countries and gaining recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The rise to political prominence of the Christian Right during the 1980s and 1990s facilitated the growth and influence of Christian Zionist efforts, connecting dispensationalism to political power as never before. While scholars in the field of diplomatic history have noted the strategic and economic concerns that drove U.S. policy toward Israel, as well as the influence of the American Jewish community and its lobby, they have failed to adequately understand or integrate the profound political actions of Christian Zionists. By examining the role that Christian Zionism has had in the myriad of factors that have influenced U.S.
