SELIGMAN & COMPANY BUILDING (later LEHMAN BROTHERS BUILDING; now Banca Commerciale Italiana Building), 1 William Street (aka 1-9 William Street, 1-7 South William Street, and 63-67 Stone Street), Borough of Manhattan. Built 1906-07; Francis H. Kimball and Julian C. Levi, architects; George A. Fuller Co., builders; South William Street facade alteration 1929, Harry R. Allen, architect; addition 1982-86, Gino Valle, architect. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 29, Lot 36. On December 12, 1995, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the J. & W. Seligman & Company Building (later Lehman Brothers Building; now Banca Commerciale Italiana Building) and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing was continued to January 30, 1996 (Item No. 4). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Nine witnesses spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger, Council Member Kathryn Freed, Municipal Art Society, New York Landmarks Conservancy, Historic Districts Council, and New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In addition, the Commission has received a resolution from Community Board 1 in support of designation. Summary The rusticated, richly sculptural, neo-Renaissance style J. & W. Seligman & Company Building, designed by Francis Hatch Kimball in association with Julian C. Levi and built in 1906-07 by the George A. Fuller Co. , is located at the intersection of William and South William Streets, two blocks off Wall Street. -

Political and religious figures described amysterious conspiracy directed by international Jewish financiers aimed at world domination. Jews found themselves increasingly excluded from hotels, resorts, countryclubs, and residential neighborhoodswhile facing limits on access to higher education and jobs.They alsocame under physical assault. While this might sound likethe situation in Imperial Germany,itisactually a description of the United States of America. Both countries, it turns out,expe- rienced adramatic wave of anti-Semitism during the 1880s and 1890s. Most scholars, however,donot see the two cases as comparable. While some see anti- Semitism in the Kaiserreich as having prepared the ground for the Holocaust, manyhavecome to see the anti-Jewish atmosphere in the United States during the same periodasanunfortunate, though ultimately harmless expressionofa broader American nativism. This paper is an effortatre-thinking some of our assumptions about anti-Semitism. By placing the scholarship on anti-Semitism in both countries side by side, this paper seeks to challenge such anotionof exceptionalism throughacomparative and transnational analysisofanti-Sem- itism in Germanyand the United States that looks forward, not back throughthe lens of the Holocaust. In anumber of additional ways, the similarities in the experiences of Germany and the United States in the latter third of the nineteenth centuryare rather striking.They involved the integration of both countries into agrowing process of globalization while at the same time they were dealing with fundamental questions of national self-definition. -

Montclair State University Montclair State University Digital Commons Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects 5-2020 Anti-Semitism in American Realist Literature: Edith Wharton’s Sim Rosedale - a Thorn in American Identity Elizabeth Pantirer Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalcommons.montclair.edu/etd Part of the English Language and Literature Commons Pantirer 1 Abstract How does canonical American literature from the early twentieth century reflect the American Jew and anti-Semitic sentiments? How do these novels portray the American Jew as a threat to American identity? In this thesis, I answer these questions and argue how American literature is a product of its culture demonstrating and reproducing fears and accepted ideologies. These fears perpetuated and solidified anti-Semitic stereotypes and alienated Jews from society. In my research, I examine how literature acts as a cultural product specifically homing in on particular anti-Semitic stereotypes which represent a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant fear of "otherness." This analysis will draw from historical context that can be revealed through archival material, biographical research, scholarly critiques, and a close reading of the novel The House of Mirth (1905) by Edith Wharton. This novel reflects elitist societal beliefs, provides insights into social structures of the period, and invites a deep exploration of religion defined in terms of race. I read this novel in its historical context as a symptom of prejudice. This essay focuses on the Jewish character Sim Rosedale as an outcast and threat to American identity and society, both exemplifying early twentieth-century attitudes and perpetuating anti-Semitic sentiments. Wharton’s Rosedale is the epitome of a Jewish stereotype, and Wharton portrays Rosedale as a pariah and threat to society and social order. -
