Breathtaking flora and fauna, heritage drawn from the ages and the presence of a large number of diverse groups makes this place a treasure grove. If culture represents the entire gamut of relationships which human beings share with themselves as well as with nature, the built environment, folk life and artistic activity, the north-east is a ‘cultural and biodiversity hotspot’, whose immense potential is beginning to be recognised. There is need for greater awareness and sensitisation here, especially among the young. In this respect, the National Knowledge Commission believes that the task of connecting with the north-east requires a multi-pronged approach, where socio-economic development must accompany multi-cultural understanding. -

Chapter 9 Beyond Labor History’s Comfort Zone? Labor Regimes in Northeast India, from the Nineteenth to the Twenty-First Century Willem van Schendel 1 Introduction What is global labor history about? The turn toward a world-historical under- standing of labor relations has upset the traditional toolbox of labor histori- ans. Conventional concepts turn out to be insufficient to grasp the dizzying array and transmutations of labor relations beyond the North Atlantic region and the industrial world. Attempts to force these historical complexities into a conceptual straitjacket based on methodological nationalism and Eurocentric schemas typically fail.1 A truly “global” labor history needs to feel its way toward new perspectives and concepts. In his Workers of the World (2008), Marcel van der Linden pro- vides us with an excellent account of the theoretical and methodological chal- lenges ahead. He makes it very clear that labor historians need to leave their comfort zone. The task at hand is not to retreat into a further tightening of the theoretical rigging: “we should resist the temptation of an ‘empirically empty Grand Theory’ (to borrow C. Wright Mills’s expression); instead, we need to de- rive more accurate typologies from careful empirical study of labor relations.”2 This requires us to place “all historical processes in a larger context, no matter how geographically ‘small’ these processes are.”3 This chapter seeks to contribute to a more globalized labor history by con- sidering such “small” labor processes in a mountainous region of Asia. My aim is to show how these processes challenge us to explore beyond the comfort zone of “labor history,” and perhaps even beyond that of “global labor history” * International Institute of Social History and University of Amsterdam. -

64 Indian Tribal Culture: A Rediscovery of Gospel Values T. JACOB THOMAS In this paper we shall attempt to highlight some aspects of tribal culture, focusing on some tribes of North and Northeast India and their social and community organization which are egalitarian, democratic and eco-conscious. In doing so, it is our contention, that we may be miraculously rediscovering some of the gospel values for the larger humanity. 1. Some preliminary remarks: The term 'tribe' has not been satisfactorily defined. In ordinary language the term is associated with people living in isolated surroundings from the rest of the population. The Shillong consulation of Tribals in 1962 defined tribe as "an indigenous, homogenous unit, speaking a common language, claiming a common ancestry living in a particular geographical area, backward in technology, pre-literate, loyally observing soCial and political customs based on kinship" (Religion and Society9:80) In International Circles, by the UNO and ILO, the tribe is repl~ced with the term "Indigenous people." But the Indian Government has not so far accorded the status of "indigenous people" to the Indian tribals. (Religion and Society 38: 18). Some Indian anthropologists and politicians fear that the term adivasi (indigenous or original people) would raise "claims of privilege among some people" that would harm "harmony of races and peoples" and thus endanger national integration. (G.S. Ghurye, p.29). They contemplate the "inevitable" or "desirable" disapperance of tribal identity within the m~jor Indian culture and ensue state policies towards that end. This constitutes the tribal pathos, "the adivasi vedana" of the contemporary period which finds violent expressions, the latest example of which is the Jharkhan<;l movement. -

Carolyn Niengneihmoi Research Scholar, Manipur University ABSTRACT : The tribal arts and crafts of Manipur provide for the fascinating study of tribal culture. This is readily apparent in the crafts of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo tribes. It is an integral part and reflects every aspect of their culture. They have an independent existence which conditions their outlook towards Arts and Crafts by way of building their homes, household items, costumes, jewellery etc. These crafted objects are made of simple materials and though they are not designed in the most exotic and attractive manner, they are known for their ethnic authenticity. The production of crafts is an inherent practice common among the Chin-Kuki-Mizo tribes. They are not professionally trained or rely on hereditary talent and skill honed over generations. The leading forms of Chin-Kuki-Mizo arts and crafts include handloom and handicrafts like weaving, use of textiles, wood carving, basket weaving and jewellery made of beads, metals, ivory, wood etc. Dresses are the identity of every nation or tribe. For the Chin Kuki Mizo, “dresses are the unwritten constitution”. It is a symbol whereby a man’s social status, culture can be determined. Every shawl and loin cloth is patterned with beautiful designs and chequered with different colours which have immense cultural significance. Their clothes are created from designs based on things they find in their surroundings, such as creatures, animals birds, rivers etc as well as in the myths of origin of the tribe concerned. -

SYNOPSIS This thesis is an attempt to construct a relevant Mizo theology of mission in the Mizo Christian context in Mizoram. The author has drawn theological hermeneutics from the interaction of the Gospel and Mizo traditional religious and cultural elements such as the concept of God-human-world with the aim of reinterpreting them to reconstruct a Mizo Theology of Mission. Methodologically, the author mainly used the postcolonial approach and synthetic approach to explore the interaction of the Christian mission brought by the western missionaries and the Mizo traditional religion and cultural practices. Firstly, relevant Mizo religion and cultural elements, which will be utilized, are introduced with a brief interpretation. Secondly, the study explores how, as a result of the Colonial rule and the Mission enterprise, the life of the Mizo society was changed in both constructive and destructive ways. -

The Commission, however, commenced its work from 1st July, 2009. It is a matter of great credit to the Government of Mizoram to have conceived of setting-up this Commission realizing that education is a key factor which can elevate the status of the people of Mizoram and promote their socio-cultural identity and also equip them to meet the challenges of the times. Education is a unique investment in the present and the future. Its acculturating influence on the society is unquestioned. The issues and concerns deliberated by the Commission which pertain to the multi-dimensional facets of education, if implemented in letter and spirit, will lead to the development of a social polity from which the Mizo society can reap reach dividends. It is bearing on this aspect that the Commission has entitled the Report: Towards an Enlightened and Inclusive Mizo Society. We are convinced that the State must unreservedly commit itself to the task of implementation of the recommendations of the Commission which have emanated from its detailed deliberations and an in-depth analysis of the current situation. -
Chapter 6 Mizoram
Chapter 6 Mizoram Lal Pudaite 1. Physical Features Location: Mizoram lies in the north east end of India, much of its southern part sandwiched between Bangladesh and Myanmar. It is situated between 21.56 to 24.31 degrees north latitude and 92.16 to 93.26 degrees east longitude, extending over a land area of 21,087 square kilometers. The Tropic of Cancer passes by the capital city, Aizawl. The length of the state from north to south is 277 km. At the broadest from east to west, it is 121 km. Its major length in the west borders the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, spanning 318 km. In the east and the south, its border with the Chin Hills and Northern Arakans of Myanmar extends to about 404 km. On the Indian side, Mizoram is bounded by the states of Assam, Manipur and Tripura. The length of its borders with these states extends over 123 km, 95 km. and 66 km, respectively. Districts–8; Sub-Divisions–15; Development Blocks–22; Villages–817; Towns–22; City–1. There are no City or Town Councils. These are administered by Local administration Department (LAD) of the State Government. Autonomous District Councils – 3, namely, the Chakma, Lai and Mara District Councils in the southern region. Geography Natural Resources: The mountain ranges in Mizoram run from north to south and largely taper from the middle of the state towards the north, the west and the south. The ranges in the west are steep and precipitous while e those in the east are somewhat gentler. -

The Hmar tribe is one of the significant ethnic communities who have their own identity, culture, traditional institution and language. The Hmars living in the different states of Northeast India have their own set of administration system from a very long period of time. The Hmars are one of the earliest inhabitants of the region and they follow a simple and systematic form of governance. The village administration is supervises by the village chief and his councilors. They live mostly in the hills of south Manipur, Mizoram, Cachar, North Cachar, Meghalaya, Tripura. Their habitants are also spreading in Burma (Myanmar) and Chittagong Hill Tracts. Although these areas are under different administrative set ups, they are geographically connected.
