Rossi Sono molti i fili conduttori che si intrecciano in questo lavoro e ne sot- tolineano la ricchezza e il significato. Uno è certamente la personalità di Mario Gozzini e il suo ruolo culturale e politico nel mondo cattolico fio- rentino e nazionale. Ma la figura di Gozzini è punto di riferimento di un confronto e di una progressiva convergenza di intellettuali e politici cat- tolici e laici, liberaldemocratici e marxisti, che costituisce l’asse princi- pale lungo cui si svolge l’insieme delle vicende trattate in queste pagine. All’origine vi è il Dialogo alla prova, la nota iniziativa di Gozzini, che rappresenta un punto di svolta del confronto tra cattolici e marxisti, non solo nel contesto italiano. Preceduto da una densa e articolata ricostru- zione delle sue scaturigini nell’ambiente cattolico e intellettuale fioren- tino, dove personalità di indubbio spessore, da La Pira a don Milani, da Ernesto Balducci a Nicola Pistelli, sono al centro di rapporti politici e culturali proiettati per lo più in una dimensione nazionale e spesso in- ternazionale, il Dialogo diventa un passaggio di fondamentale importan- za del processo di allargamento e di consolidamento della democrazia italiana, avviato con l’esperienza di governo del centro-sinistra negli an- ni Sessanta. Il confronto di cui si dà conto in queste pagine non si concentra su temi politici o economici, ma investe soprattutto visioni del mondo, si- stemi, valori: religione e cultura; le garanzie di libertà nello Stato e nella società; il pluralismo in una società socialista; lo Stato laico e non ideo- logico. Un dialogo di grandi idee e, perché no?, di utopie; che vuol es- sere prevalentemente culturale, ma i cui risvolti politici sono trasparen- ti in ogni passaggio; che tocca problemi di lungo periodo, ma insieme in- veste l’attualità e lascia intravedere soluzioni anche in termini di allean- ze e di programmi. Terreno di incontro e insieme l’obiettivo di fondo di questo dialogo è la prospettiva di un cambiamento radicale della società e dei rapporti internazionali, di cui cattolici e comunisti, portatori entrambi di conce- zioni organiche e progressive, sarebbero i protagonisti. Non sono molti IX LA DEMOCRAZIA ALLA PROVA né chiaramente definiti i richiami agli strumenti cui dovrebbe essere af- fidato il cambiamento: e certo né i principali interlocutori marxisti, da Ingrao a Lombardo Radice, né gli intellettuali cattolici coinvolti sono particolarmente attenti agli strumenti politico-amministrativi ed econo- mico-sociali rispetto ai contenuti teorici del dibattito. Anzi, affiora a più riprese una esplicita diffidenza verso una linea politica, attribuita in pri- mo luogo ad Amendola, che si teme, come scrive Gozzini nel 1965, «fi- nisca per trovare nel laicismo un terreno ricettivo e diventi una compo- nente fondamentale del grande disegno di socialdemocratizzazione eu- ropea». (E, dal canto suo, Amendola, scrivendo qualche anno dopo a Li- vio Labor, incalza: «credo che più che una proposta di società, sia ne- cessario affrontare i problemi politici ed economici, che si pongono con drammatica urgenza».) Incontro di due integralismi estranei a una moderna prospettiva riformista, potrebbe essere la conclusione di una critica superficiale e ri- petitiva. In realtà è l’ampiezza delle prospettive e delle problematiche che toglie spazio a una disamina puntuale della concreta prassi riformi- sta e tanto più all’approfondimento di specifici provvedimenti legislati- vi. Del resto, lo stesso dibattito teorico-politico sulle riforme (di struttu- ra, correttive…) già nella fase ascendente del centro-sinistra aveva mo- strato un rilevante grado di indeterminatezza, aprendo la strada alla de- lusione e al ripiegamento, di cui il dialogo degli anni Sessanta voleva es- sere un’alternativa. Inoltre la dimensione cui soprattutto si guarda e che fa costante- mente da sfondo ai temi affrontati è quella internazionale: il rifiuto del- la guerra fredda, la scelta della distensione, la liquidazione del coloniali- smo e il riscatto dal sottosviluppo. L’idea guida del “ponte”, si potrebbe dire ricorrendo a un tema centrale della simbologia lapiriana: il ponte tra Oriente e Occidente, tra ebrei e arabi, tra cristiani e musulmani; il pon- te sul Mediterraneo, fra le coste dell’Africa e dell’Europa. In questa pro- spettiva lo spazio per incontri di minore portata, per la ricerca di obiet- tivi limitati, per realizzazioni immediate si contrae inevitabilmente. Co- me scrive lo stesso La Pira a Enrico Berlinguer, nel 1969, «Chiesa catto- lica e stati socialisti (non un marxismo vago): questa “la grande” (inevi- tabile) convergenza dei decenni che sono davanti a noi». Nell’obiettivo della collaborazione internazionale tra tutte le forze di progresso si ritrova probabilmente anche l’eredità della grande alleanza antifascista della seconda guerra mondiale, rilanciata da quella che sem- brava l’apertura del sistema sovietico con Krusciov, dalle speranze su- scitate dalla breve esperienza di Kennedy, dal messaggio di papa Gio- vanni XXIII. Per contro l’Occidente democratico e cristiano si muove in una direzione opposta, che offre pochi appigli a convergenze ideali o a X PREFAZIONE un incontro sulle cose. The initial problem was that this type of consecration was considered impossible and unimaginable at that time, as it did not exist in the canon law. He started, however, with the women’s Institute of “the Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ” originated within the Third Order as “a branch of the great and prolific Franciscan tree”. The first twelve “Franciscan Tertiaries of the Social Kingdom of the Sacred Heart” consecrated themselves to the Lord, in the little choir of the church of San Damiano in Assisi, on the nineteenth of November 1919. This was before the foundation of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart that took place in 1921. These early Missionaries, through their witness of consecrated life in the world, gave a great contribution to the official acknowledgement of this special vocation by the Church.

ABSTRACT This study examines Tertullian’s references to the New Testament outside the Gospels, in order to determine whether he was citing from a Greek or Latin copy of these writings. A new collection of these references was undertaken and is explained in the Appendix. The conclusion of the analysis is that Tertullian was quoting the New Testament writings using Greek exemplars and translating anew in most instances. Tertullian was one of the first Christians to have undertaken such translation work. It is proposed that Tertullian was participating in and influenced by a broad cultural-linguistic movement called the Second Sophistic. Latin writers like Cicero, Quintilian, Varro, and Apuleius were also participants, and their translation of Greek works into Latin likely formed Tertullian to become a literary translator.

    PLURALISM AMONGST SECULAR INSTITUTES By GIUSEPPE LAZZATI NE OF THE resolutions unanimously adopted at the first World Congress of Secular Institutes last September concerned the pluralism of secular Institutes. It was taken O in response to the universal desire to safeguard the origi- nal inspiration, the charism, of the individual Institute. The idea was not, of course, to include under the term secular Institute various fundamentally different states of life; but simply to indicate that it does have a precise meaning which clearly demarcates a specific kind of life approved by the Church. The advantages of investigating the limits of this pluralism are obvious enough? There is in actual fact a great variety of forms which correspond to the canonical descriptions of the secular Insti- tute. 2 Further, there are today canonically established secular Institutes which no longer wish to be considered as such, because present-day norms no longer seem to correspond to their original inspiration. The particular way of life that an Institute represents, its specific characteristic, depends on the charism of the founder - his endowment by the holy Spirit for the establishment in the Church of a new form of christian life, a particularization of the universal call to holiness. It is this spiritual endowment which determines a particular form of life and its essential elements, whilst many other elements are external, accidental and ephemeral. It is clear, for instance, and today more than ever before, that 'it's not the cowl that makes the monk', nor could one describe a lay vocation by the mere absence of external signs.

While dealing with the meaning of utopianism, and its relation with eschatology and Millenarianism, I had to come to terms with Milton’s haunting presence throughout the 19th century: sometimes half-hidden between the lines, as in Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan”, other times foregrounded, as in Shelley’s fragment “Milton’s spirit.” At the same time, as part of the coursework, I had the fortune to attend a seminar on John Milton. That was my first, fruitful occasion to familiarize with his poetry. A very cursory reference to Augustine has stayed with me since that seminar. Having had the unexpected chance of a school leave for a second doctorate, I decided to resume the reference (the “felix culpa” concept) and to undertake a research on the presence of Augustine in Milton’s work. I had never read a line of Augustine’s and, as a start, I read Confessiones, which opened up a world of possibilities, as I saw how much of Milton’s work might have sprung out of this extraordinary book.

    THE SACRED CONGREGATION FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL INTRODUCTION 1. The Catholic school is receiving more and more attention in the Church since the Second Vatican Council, with particular emphasis on the Church as she appears in the Constitutions Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes. In the Council's Declaration Gravissimum Educationis it is discussed in the wider sphere of Christian education. The present document develops the idea of this Declaration, limiting itself to a deeper reflection on the Catholic school. 2. The Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education is aware of the serious problems which are an integral part of Christian education in a pluralistic society. It regards as a prime duty, therefore, the focusing of any attention on the nature and distinctive characteristics of school which would present itself as Catholic. Yet the diverse situations and legal systems in which the Catholic school has to function in Christian and non-Christian countries demand that local problems be faced and solved by each Church within its own social-cultural context. 3. While acknowledging this duty of the local Churches, the Sacred Congregation believes that now is the opportune moment to offer its own contribution by re-emphasising clearly the educational value of the Catholic school. It is in this value that the Catholic school's fundamental reason for existing and the basis of its genuine apostolate is to be found. This document does not pretend to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject; it merely proposes to state the premises that will lead to further fruitful study and implementation.

AMBROSE OF MILAN'S DE OBITU THEODOSII: RESHAPING AND REDEFINING THE EMPEROR'S ROLE IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE ARIAN CRISIS Abstract: On Sunday, February 25th, 395, the ceremony that took place in one of Milan christian basilicae was not an usual one. Forty days after the death of Emperor Theodosius, the nobleman Aurelius Ambrosius, bishop of Mediolanum, accomplished the duty not only to celebrate the service, but also to praise the accession to Heaven happening to the dead Sovereign. By doing that, Ambrose played a role of the utmost importance for the self-understanding and the self-representing of the Imperial Court, carrying on a very difficult task. Despite the challenge, Ambrose did not only perform successfully the due (and expected) tribute to Theodosius, but was able to convert the traditional vision of the emperor – deeply marked by a centuries-long pagan imaginery – into a christian one, that in spite of the large number of non-christian people among his audience, nevertheless could be understandable to pagan ears, and in the same time proved evidently that even the most sacred rites of the Roman empire had to face the building of a Christian Weltanschauung. What happened in that occasion can be learned not only from the accounts of contemporary church historians (who are usually quite essential in their writings, whose value lies mostly in the information they give us about the presence of Theodosius’ relatives and close friends at the funeral rites), but also from the sermon preached by St.

    Personal health in the context of Christian worldview Anna Koteneva* Abstract: The article presents the results of a theoretical study of human health. The ideas about the nature and criteria of personal health from the standpoint of modern humanitarian knowledge are generalized. The main approaches to the problem of personal psychological health are presented. The study of personal health was carried out from the standpoint of the Christian doctrine of man, formed in line with the Eastern Christian worldview, according to which human nature is a trinity of spirit, soul and body. The spiritual basis is considered as the main basis in man, which, in the normative type of his organization, has a transformative effect on his soul and body. Various characteristics of personal spiritual and moral health are given and their role in implementation of man's life mission is shown. The interrelations of spiritual, mental and physical health, as well as the causes of diseases and their spiritual meaning are investigated. Personal health is considered as an integral, complex, multi-level socio-cultural formation, including psychophysical, psychological, spiritual and moral characteristics of man. It manifests itself in the dehumanization of man, his depersonalization, oblivion of eternal spiritual and moral values and spiritual meanings of life. Value disorientation of man, reduction of his moral responsibility for actions is accompanied by the choice of violence, aggression as a way of solving personal and social problems, and, as a result, leads to criminalization of society, growth of drug addiction, alcoholism, suicidal behavior, destruction of family and erosion of socio-cultural identity of personality (Koteneva 2013; Reshetnikov 2015).

    THE LITERATURE OF CHRISTIAN ANTIQUITY: CURRENT PROJECTS At the Second International Conference on Patristic Studies, centered at Christ Church, Oxford, September 19-24, 1955, one of the most informa­ tive and fascinating sessions was devoted to Instrumenta studiorum: four­ teen brief reports on several institutions, series of publications, and projects which are of interest to patristic scholars. Owing in part to limitations of time, in part to language barriers, it was quite impossible for the speakers to present their material to the audience in satisfactory fashion. Through the graciousness of the Conference's Secretary, Dr. F. L. Cross, and with the cooperation of the scholars who read the reports at Oxford, it has be­ come possible for the present writer to offer this wealth of information to a still wider public in the pages of THEOLOGICAL STUDIES. It should be em­ phasized, however, that the accounts which follow do not pretend to repro­ duce verbatim the original reports; our bulletin is an adaptation of those reports, primarily in point of style and arrangement, less frequently in content.
