Jones, an original member of the hip hop collective The Diplomats (also known as Dipset), is also the co-CEO of Diplomat Records, alongside his longtime friend and other Harlem rapper, Cam'ron. Jones is also a music video director under the pseudonym capo, having directed videos for artists such as Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, Remy Ma and State Property. In 2004, he released his first solo album On My Way to Church. The release of his second album, Harlem: Diary of a Summer in 2005, coincided with Jones landing a management position in A and R to E1 Music. A year later, he is on his third album Hustler's P.O.M.E. (Product of My Environment) (2006), which spawned his biggest single to date, We Fly High. The song reached number five on the U.S. Hot 100 chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Cameron Ezike Giles (born February 4, 1976 in Harlem, New York), better known as Cam'ron or Killa Cam, is an American rapper, actor, co- founder of Diplomat Records and of the group The Diplomats, also known as Dipset. He began his musical career in 1994, rapping alongside Big L, Mase and his cousin Bloodshed in a group called Children of the Corn. The group dissolved after Bloodshed's death in a car accident in 1997. However, Cam'ron continued to rap, and he released his solo debut album, Confessions of Fire, in 1998. He has since released 2000's S.D.E, 2002's Come Home With Me, 2004's Purple Haze, 2006's Killa Season and 2009's Crime Pays. Cam'ron made his acting debut on the 2002 film Paid in Full, where he played the character Rico, who is based on former Harlem drug dealer Alpo. In 2006, Cam'ron would return to his acting career and make his debut in screen writing in his movie Killa Season. Cam'ron plays a high school basketball player who eventually drops out of high school to begin his own drug ring. The movie was released in 2006, simultaneous with the Killa Season album. Confessions of Fire. Following in the footsteps of Sean "Puffy" Combs, Cam'ron created an accessible fusion of rap and pop that manages to keep some sort of street edge. Of course, that doesn't mean Cam'ron is hardcore -- he may come off as an East Coast gangsta, but his music is polished and melodic, much like that of Puff, his mentor.

    The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia by Sandra C Zichermann A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education Sociology in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Sandra C Zichermann 2013 The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia Sandra C Zichermann Doctor of Education Sociology in Education University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This thesis investigates the rise of the cultures and music of hip-hop and rap in the West and its effects on its female listeners and fans, especially those in academia. The thesis consists of two parts. First I conducted a content analysis of 95 lyrics from the book, Hip-Hop & Rap: Complete Lyrics for 175 Songs (Spence, 2003). The songs I analyzed were performed by male artists whose lyrics repeated misogynist and sexist messages. Second, I conducted a focus group with young female university students who self-identify as fans of hip-hop and/or rap music. In consultation with my former thesis supervisor, I selected women enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes focused on gender and race because they are equipped with an academic understanding of the potential damage or negative effects of anti-female or negative political messaging in popular music. My study suggests that the impact of hip-hop and rap music on young women is both positive and negative, creating an overarching feeling of complexity for some young female listeners who enjoy music that is infused with some lyrical messages they revile.
