Astrology and fortune telling tap into this deep yearning mankind has to want to know the future. These sources have no ability to provide correct answers for us or are dangerous means that open people up to the evil spirit realm. Bible prophecy, on the other hand, comes direct via the inspiration of God. It’s track record has been 100% with its many specific prophecies relating to the great ruling empires of Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome. It even foretold the great Islamic empire of the 6th and 7 th centuries after Christ when Islam rapidly spread across North Africa and the Middle East. The apostle Peter writes: We also have a more sure word of prophecy, to which you do well to take heed (2 Peter 1:19). It has been said that 90% of prophecy is for the end time. The theological term for end-time prophecy is eschatology. Eschatology or end-time Bible prophecy is a fascinating subject. All scripture is God-inspired (2 Timothy 3:16) and can be relied upon 100% but not everything written in the Bible is 100% crystal clear and so it is open to interpretation and, as a result, there are some quite divergent interpretations of end-time Bible prophecy. What God meant when He inspired it is 100% reliable. That can’t be said of men’s interpretation of God’s prophecies. When men correctly interpret what God has said that can be relied upon but it is very easy to think we have the correct interpretation when it is not in sync with what God meant and so we can easily get it wrong if we misinterpret the prophecies. In this book I would like to explore and compare and contrast many of the common viewpoints of prophecy in both mainstream Christianity and as well as the Church of God. We shall compare these interpretations with the clues that we have in the Bible and look at their strengths and weaknesses. We will start with the mainstream christian views – Catholic and then Protestant/Evangelical views such as Hal Lindsay and Tim LaHaye along with the Seventh-Day Adventist and Jhovah Witnesses views. After that I would like to analyse the various views within the Church of God such as the traditional viewpoint given through Herbert Armstrong and other alternatives such as those put forth by Stephen Collins, Fred Coulter, John Rittenbaugh and others. OUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS PROPHECY What is our attitude towards prophecy? The prophecies of God’s Kingdom to come at the beginning of the millennium are exciting and are events that will bring amazing happiness and joy to this world but what about the prophecies of the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord? What should our response be to the terrifying events that will come upon this whole world? In Amos 5:18-20 we read: 2 Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD ! For what good is the day of the LORD to you? It will be darkness, and not light. It will be as though a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him! Or as though he went into the house, leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him! Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light? Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it? In Revelation 10:9-10 we also read: So I went to the angel and said to him, ‘Give me the little book.’ And he said to me, ‘Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.’ Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, my stomach became bitter. There is a prophetic kick, an excitement we feel when we better understand the details of events that will happen in the future. This is natural and parallels the scroll being sweet in John’s mouth when he ate it. However, after he ate it and it sank into to his stomach it became bitter. When the reality fully sinks in to our minds what these events will be like these are not pleasant events. These are horribly destructive events where there will be a phenomenal loss of life and human carnage. The events of 9/11 will be a picnic in comparison. It reminds me of a scene I saw in the movie 2010. In order to put the crew into a gentle orbit around Jupiter’s moon, Io, they had to slingshot around the planet Jupiter and do something they referred to as aerobraking. It was an absolutely frightening maneuver which had never been done before. After they successfully came through it the crew wakes up Chandra who was in sleep hibernation during the aerobraking. He asks Dr Floyd, who was awake for the aerobraking, how aerobraking was. He said, “We’re here so it worked.” Chandra then says, “I wish I was awake to have seen it” to which Dr Floyd replies, “I wish I could have slept through it.” While there is some degree of excitement now in knowing the details of these events of the Day of the Lord most of us when we go through this terrifying time will probably be just like Dr Floyd and wish we could sleep right through it. When it comes to Bible prophecy I often find two extremes that people go to. One extreme was promoted

  • Adventist Eschatology in Relation to the Religious Left and the Religious Right
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society, 23/2 (2012):190-242. Article copyright © 2012 by Michael F. Younker. Adventist Eschatology in Relation to the Religious Left and the Religious Right Michael F. Younker Ph.D. Student, SDA Theological Seminary Andrews University 1. Introduction It is commonly understood that Seventh-day Adventist eschatology predicts that a Sunday Law in homage to Papal authority will be enacted in the United States and other nations in the final period of earth’s history preceding the Second Coming of Christ.1 Furthermore, despite its ultimate inevitability according to the sure word of prophecy, prior to such an enactment we are obligated to do all we reasonably can to delay this law by uplifting the importance of religious liberty.2 I affirm these beliefs. The 1 For a collection of Seventh-day Adventist thought leader Ellen White’s comments on this, see Donald Ernest Mansell, The Shape of the Coming Crisis (Nampa, ID: Pacific Press Publishing Association, 1998), 58-82. As White herself put it, “The Sabbath question is to be the issue in the great final conflict in which all the world will act a part,” Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church Volume Six, 352. 2 “A time is coming when the law of God is, in a special sense, to be made void in our land. The rulers of our nation will, by legislative enactments, enforce the Sunday law, and thus God's people [will] be brought into great peril. When our nation, in its legislative councils, shall enact laws to bind the consciences of men in regard to their religious privileges, enforcing Sunday observance, and bringing oppressive power to bear against those who keep the seventh-day Sabbath, the law of God will, to all intents and purposes, be made void in our land; and national apostasy will be followed by national ruin.

  • The Fragmenting of Apocalypticism Within a Denominationalizing Sect: the Case of Seventh-Day Adventism
The Fragmenting of Apocalypticism within a Denominationalizing Sect: The Case of Seventh-day Adventism Ronald Lawson Paper Presented at the Meeting of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, Nashville, November 1996. Introduction Research has shown that over time many religious sects reduce the tensions between themselves and surrounding society, and thus move from sect towards denomination. For a millenarian sect to follow this process, its apocalyptic must become less urgent: it must become less rejecting of the present society and put down roots there. However, the dynamics of this process, and especially the strains that emerge within the group as a result of the diversifying of beliefs about its apocalyptic during the long period of change have never before been the focus of detailed investigation. An excellent example of such dynamics is provided by Seventh-day Adventists [Adventists]. Adventists trace their roots to the Millerite Movement, which proclaimed that the Second Coming of Christ would occur on October 22, 1844. That is, their origins were urgently apocalyptic. In spite of the humiliation and heartbreak of what they called the "Great Disappointment," Adventist pioneers continued to expect the imminent return of Jesus, and regarded this belief as so important that they enshrined it in their name. In October 1994, Adventists celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Great Disappointment – and of a century and a half of believing and preaching that Jesus would soon return. This paper explores the responses of North American Adventists to the tension between their belief in an imminent apocalypse and the delay in its fulfillment.

  • Beyond Reparations: an American Indian Theory of Justice
OHIO STATE LAW JOURNAL VOLUME 66, NUMBER 1, 2005 Beyond Reparations: An American Indian Theory of Justice WILLIAM BRADFORD* It is perhaps impossible to overstate the magnitude of the human injustice perpetrated againstAmerican Indianpeople: indeed, the severity and duration of the harms endured by the original inhabitants of the US. may well rival those suffered by any other group past or present, domestic or international. While financialreparations for certainpast transgressionsmay be appropriateto some groups and situations, the historical and ongoing injustices committed against Indians living within the US. cannot be adequately understood in material terms. Although in recent decades various models of justice have been proposed in respect of a series of gross human injustices, incomplete and even erroneous understandingsof the nature of Indian claims and an overly narrow conception of the potential parameters of remedial justice render these approachesineffectual. This Article presents a alternative theory of justice, termed "Justice as Indigenism" (JAI). As applied JAI commits its practitioners to a sequential process consisting of seven distinct stages: acknowledgment, apology, peacemaking, commemoration, compensation, land restoration, legal reformation, and reconciliation. JAI advances the frontiers of thinking about justice on behalf of Indians in that its normative mission is not the award of materialcompensation or the attribution of blame but ratherthe ultimate healing of the American and Indian nations and the joint authorship

Property of Pluto Press: Do Not Reproduce The Islamophobia Industry “This concise, accessible and illuminating book meets one of the most urgent needs of our time. Lean has provided a compelling counter-narrative that reveals the vested interests and highly organized networks of those who preach the virulent Islamophobia that is not only endangering world peace but is also corroding the tolerance and egalitarian ethos that should characterize Western society. This book should be required reading.” — Karen Armstrong “Islamophobia is not only about ignorance and fear. Some people purposefully nurture it and use it as a political strategy. Nathan Lean’s The Islamophobia Industry shows what is happening behind the scenes. It is an essential book for anyone who wants to understand the rationale and objectives behind those who foster this new racism against Muslims.” — Tariq Ramadan, Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University and author of The Quest for Meaning “The climate of fear and cultural mistrust is one of the grim aspects of present-day society—but it doesn’t happen by accident. As this readable and well-researched book demonstrates, hatred sells; it can provide both money and power to those who profit from it. This book exposes the dirty secrets of those who try to manipulate public opinion against Muslims. It should be read by policymakers, concerned citizens, and everyone who values truth and intercultural understanding.” — Mark Juergensmeyer, Professor of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence. “Nathan Lean has written a book of immense importance for our times.
