AUGUST 1ST 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PǂLjdž 3 PǂLjdž 4 OUR LADY OF THE VALLEY • BIRMINGHAM, AL PRAYERS FIRST FRIDAY SACRED HEART DEVOTION Come join us Friday, August 6th, following 6:20 am Mass in the chapel for the First Friday Devoon to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We will pray for the needs of our clergy, parish, and personal intenons. Our Lord has promised through St. Margaret Mary Alocoque, safe refuge and salvaon to all who honor his sacred heart on nine consecuve First Fridays by aending Mass, receiving Holy Communion, and making reparaon for our offenses. As stated by Pope Pius XI in 1928, “Devoon to the Most Sacred Heart is an extraordinary remedy for the extraordinary needs of our me.” MARY’S CORNER Our Lady Queen of Peace Our Lady Queen of Peace is the tle given to Mary as patroness of the Congregaon of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. During the French Revoluon (1789R1799), Fr. Peter Coudrin hid in an ac for six months where he had a vision of being surrounded by groups of priests and sisters in white robes. He believed this to be a sign from God of a religious order he was to establish. He began his underground ministry in Poiers. In 1794, he met Henriee Aymer de Chevalerie a er she was released from prison for hiding a priest. She shared with Fr. Peter a vision she had similar to his vision of groups of priests and sisters dressed in white robes. Together, in 1800, they officially established the Congregaon of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Founding new schools for poor children and seminaries, they spread the message of God’s uncondional love and mercy. In 1827 they organized teams of missionaries to spread the Gospel to the Pacific Islands. Establishing the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, they built the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace and consecrated the islands under her protecon. It is one of the oldest Roman Cathedrals in connuous use in the United States. Her memorial feast is celebrated on January 24th in Hawaii, and July 9th in other areas, because the Archbishop of Paris crowned the original statue on that date in 1906. Feast Day: July 9th, Patron Saint: Congregaon of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Heavenly Father, We ask that you spare all souls from the scourge of aboron and protect the lives of children in the womb. Give hope and courage to their mothers to embrace life and know the peace of doing Your will. Give your strength to all fathers that they may always protect and cherish mother and child. Cause our elected leaders and courts to recognize and, through the law, protect the personhood of all unborn children. Li up all church leaders to proclaim a Culture of Life. Lead those who have parcipated in aborons to repentance and healing. Bring about the conversion of those who facilitate aborons and deny the birthright of children. Grant us the courage and energy to be Defenders of Life. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord and through the intercession of His most Blessed Mother, Mary Amen AUGUST 1ST 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PǂLjdž 5 STEWARDSHIP July 25, 2021 Offertory: $9,528.00 RENEW OLV! Volume 24, Issue 3 — September 8, 2019 September 8, 2019 Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary To the Members of the United States Association of Consecrated Virgins, One of the greatest challenges of celibates and virgins is to realize the primordial challenge from God that we be fertile and multiply. For us, the first part of responding to this challenge is to imagine how this is even possible. Obviously, this will be accomplished as a spiritual fecundity. Our life of prayer for the Church and the world, both in general and in particular is a primary way to fulfill this duty. Are there other ways? This will depend on our method of “living in the world.” Whatever it is that we do, be it Church work or completely secular labor, there we encounter fertile soil. Each of us then must determine how best we can help the Word of God take root, both by our example and by our words. God will give the increase, but we must plant seeds. Fecundity of any kind should always be the Inside this Issue Page result of love and therefore love is the primary seed which we Something Ancient - will plant. Introduction The late Bjarne Kroepelien was a great collector of books and other printed material from the Polynesia, and specifically the Tahiti. Kroepelien stayed at Tahiti for about a year in 1918 and 1919. He was married there with a Tahitian woman. He was also adopted as a son of the chief in Papenoo, Teriieroo, and given his name. During his stay at Tahiti, the island was hit by the Spanish flu and about forty percent of the inhabitants lost their lives, among them his dear wife. Kroepelien organised the health services of the victims and the burials of the deceased, he was afterwards decorated with the French Order of Merit. He went back to Norway, but his heart was lost to Tahiti, but he chose never to return to his lost paradise, and he never remarried.

  • Our Lady of Good Counsel
Our Lady of Good Counsel According to tradition, in the year 1467, in the midst of the festivities for the Feast of Saint Mark, the townfolk suddenly heard "exquisite music." A mysterious cloud was then said to have descended and obliterated an unfinished wall of the parish church. In front of the populace, the cloud dissipated and a beautiful fresco, no thicker than a carte-de-visite and no more than eighteen inches square, of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child was revealed. It was widely believed that it had been miraculously transported from a church in Scutari, Albania. On November 17, 1682, Pope Innocent XI had the picture solemnly crowned. In 1753, Pope Benedict XIV established the Pious Union of Our Lady of Good Counsel. More than any other pope, Leo XIII, was deeply attached to this devotion. On April 22, 1903, that same Pope included the invocation "Mater boni consilii" in the Litany of Loreto. In 1939, Venerable Pope Pius XII placed his pontificate under the maternal care of Our Lady of Good Counsel and composed a prayer to her. Her feast is celebrated on April 26th. Our Lady of Aparecida Our Lady of Aparecida appeared to 3 fishermen in Brazil (Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves) in October 1717. The fishermen prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception that God would grant a good catch. The fishermen, having a run of bad luck, cast their nets in the River Paraiba and dragged up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary. They also salvaged the head and, according to the legend, then netted plenty of fish.

In its attempt to be comprehensive, the book has to sacrifice a lot of depth. Except for some exceptional parts like the treatment on wealth (Maha- laga Ba ang Kayamanan?), most topics are oversimplified. Sartre's Existential- ism with its notion of freedom is presented as very similar to Thomism and Aristotle - to the neglect of Existentialism's emphasis on feeling. Marx is reduced to several paragraphs, centered on the problem of which is more important, environment or man's freedom? (Phenomenologists will certainly react to this false dichotomy!) With some additions on Chinese ethics in Chapter I1 and the problem of evil in Chapter 111, this book would make a good textbook for a course on a general introduction to Philosophy in Pilipino.
