Session I, at 10am, contains the Delaware Collection of instruments and other music-related objects all autographed by well known musicians. Access to fresh, clean water is a global problem that may be hard for some of us to fully appreciate, given northern Michigan’s incredible abundance of high quality lakes and streams. But if we’ve learned nothing else from the sad and tragic events in Flint, it’s that we should never take this resource for granted. This important lesson was driven home to me last summer when our family traveled to California on vacation. While driving through the Central Valley during a record drought, I noticed a roadside farm market offering fresh sweet cherries. Our oldest son told the farmer we live on the Old Mission Peninsula in northern Michigan, and the man’s voice became hushed and almost reverent at the mere mention of our home. He told us that we have the “best cherries on the planet,” and remarked that we are truly blessed to have plenty of water. He explained that his region was running out of water, imperiling his very way of life. After that encounter, I know for certain our sons will never look at Grand Traverse Bay with the same eyes. This year, we celebrate our 25th anniversary. From day one, your Conservancy has made watershed protection a top priority. And while we have accomplished so much in every corner of our region, we don’t plan to slow down now. -

EXHIBITION RESOURCE PACKET Medieval to Metal: The Art and Evolution of the Guitar MEDIEVAL TO METAL: THE ART AND EVOLUTION OF THE GUITAR September 29th, 2018-January 6th, 2019 How to use this resource: This packet is designed to be flexible. Use it to help prepare for a docent-led tour of the museum, to inform a self-guided tour, or to discuss selected artworks in your classroom, whether you’re able to physically visit the museum or not. The suggested activities (page 7) should be used in conjunction with in-depth discussion of at least one related artwork. The guitar has been a signature element of world culture for more than 500 years. As the guitar’s ancestors evolved over centuries from the earliest ouds and lutes to the signature hourglass shape we all know today, guitar makers experimented with shapes, materials, and accessories, seeking the perfect blend of beauty and sound. Spanning centuries of design and craftsmanship, this exhibition takes visitors through the history of an object that is one of the most recognizable items on the planet. Art and music transcend cultural boundaries while the most recognized musical instrument—the guitar—has influenced culture beyond music. Through the years the guitar and its shape have been integral elements for artists such as Vermeer and Picasso and today they are incorporated into the advertisements of everything from clothes to car. I make available my personal collection of musical instruments to regional professional recording studios.
