Getting the right balance between the needs of our society for road-based transport, and the effects of the Assembly’s road network on our wildlife is a complex and often controversial issue. The Plan itself is designed to both challenge and inspire those who work with the Directorate on the National Assembly’s road network – and, as importantly, to challenge those of us who use the network to think more about the wildlife there. -

The molecular phylogeny based on the combined dataset indicates that Margarya is polyphyletic, as two of the three well-supported clades containing species of Margarya also comprise species from other viviparid genera. In one clade, sequences of four species of Margarya even cluster indiscriminately with those of two species of Cipangopaludina, indi- cating that the current state of Asian viviparid taxonomy needs to be revised. Additionally, these data suggest that shell evolution in viviparids is complex, as even the large and strongly sculptured shells of Margarya, which are outstanding among Asian viviparids, can apparently be easily converted to simple smooth shells. -
Locomotion and Other Behavior of the Dipper

GOODGE As a part of a study of adaptations for aquatic life in the North American Dipper (C&cZ~ me&unus) , an effort was made to learn more about the locomotor behavior of this speciesin order to form a basis for interpretation of structural modifications. In this paper the locomotion of the dipper, with particular regard to underwater progres- sion, is described and analyzed by the use of information obtained through field study and by observation and motion picture photography of captive birds in the laboratory. Although a thorough field study of nesting behavior was not a part of this work, some data of this nature obtained during the study of locomotor behavior will be included. The latter material, although fragmentary, supplements previously published informa- tion. Until the work of Hann (1950) there had been no intensive study of the nesting habits of this species in spite of the fact that its unusual mode of life for a passerine bird makes it an especially interesting species. MATERIALS AND METHODS Dippers were observed in the field at many localities in the state of Washington, but the majority of the observations were made on a pair of birds nesting along the upper Raging River in the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains near North Bend, Washington, at an elevation of about 1000 feet. Other nesting dippers were observed along Icicle River near Leavenworth on the east slope of the Cascades at an elevation of about 2500 feet. Most of the field work was done in 1954 and 1955. -

Recent surveys of Hawaiian stream fauna have recorded it from numerous localities on those islands and have added the islands of Moloka‘i and Maui to its known range within the state of Hawaiʻi (englund & Godwin 2002; englund & Preston 2002; Anthony et al . 2004; Brasher et al. 2004; Parham et al . 2008). Ferrissia sharpi has been a cryptogenic species in the Hawaiian fauna as its status as native or introduced has been unclear. Freshwater Snail Guide
A Beginner’s Guide to Freshwater Snails of Central Scotland Freshwater snails are a diverse and fascinating group of molluscs found in ponds, lochs, canals, rivers and watery ditches all across the globe. This guide is a simple introduction to some of the most commonly encountered and easily identifiable freshwater snail species in Central Scotland. How do I look for freshwater snails? 1) Choose your spot: anywhere with water – your garden pond, a nearby river, canal or loch – is likely to have snails. 2) Grab a pond net (buy online or make your own by attaching a sieve to the end of an old broom or mop), a white tray or tub and a hand-lens or magnifier. 3) Fill the tray with water from your chosen habitat. Sweep the net around in the water, making sure to get among any vegetation (don’t go too near the bottom or you’ll get a net full of mud), empty your net into the water-filled tray and identify what you have found!
