Matters such as identity cards and foundation hospitals are figuring prominently north of the border though long-running issues concerned with health and law and order were important. In health, differences exist at policy level but also in terms of rhetoric – with the Health Minister refusing to refer to patients as ‘customers’. This suggests divergence without major disputes in devolutionary politics. An issue which has caused problems across Britain and was of significance this quarter was the provision of accommodation for asylum seekers as well as the education of the children of asylum seekers. Though asylum is a retained matter, the issue has devolutionary dimension as education is a devolved matter. The other significant event was the challenge to John Swinney’s leadership of the Scottish National Party. A relatively unknown party activist challenged Swinney resulting in a drawn-out campaign over the Summer which culminated in a massive victory for Swinney at the SNP’s annual conference.

Eight seats changed hands in the 1987 Parliament at by-elections. The Conservatives lost four seats to Labour and three to the Liberal Democrats. Labour lost Glasgow, Govan to the SNP. The merger of the Liberal Party and Social Democratic Party took place in March 1988 with the party named the Social and Liberal Democrats. This was changed to Liberal Democrats in 1989.

Billings The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor Bettina Arnold, PhD. The interpretation of prehistoric iconography is complicated by the tendency to project contemporary male/female gender dichotomies into the past. Pictish monumental stone sculpture in Scotland has been studied over the last 100 years. Traditionally, mirror and comb symbols found on some stones produced in Scotland between AD 400 and AD 900 have been interpreted as being associated exclusively with women and/or the female gender. This thesis re-examines this assumption in light of more recent work to offer a new interpretation of Pictish mirror and comb symbols and to suggest a larger context for their possible meaning.

    Hotspots of farm business diversification in Scotland Jonathan Hopkins1, Carla Barlagne1, Lee-Ann Sutherland1, Keith Matthews2, Andrew Barnes3, Luiza Toma3 1Social, Economic and Geographical Sciences Group, The James Hutton Institute, Aberdeen 2Information and Computational Sciences Group, The James Hutton Institute, Aberdeen 3Land Economy and Environment Group, Scotland’s Rural College, Edinburgh On-farm wind turbine in Aberdeenshire Purpose of document This note forms an output of Research Deliverable 2.4.2 ‘How Rural Economies Can Adapt to Key External Drivers’, undertaken as part of the RESAS Strategic Research Programme (2016-2021). This work has helped to “…identify indicators of innovation and diversification”1. This note presents an analysis of questionnaire and public datasets to identify areas in Scotland where there is evidence of high levels of farm diversification activity (‘farm diversification hotspots’). The note describes the uptake of non-farming enterprises and income diversification in Scotland, focusing in particular on renewable energy projects and agri-tourism development. Key findings • Levels of diversification are high in the rural areas north of central Scotland: Argyll, Stirling, Perth and Kinross, Fife, and Angus. • Lanarkshire and Aberdeenshire have a high concentration of on-farm renewable energy schemes, in particular onshore wind projects. • Different types of renewable energy technology tend to cluster together.     Proc Soc Antiq Scot, 132 (2002), 65–137 Claish, Stirling: an early Neolithic structure in its context Gordon J Barclay*, Kenneth Brophy‡ & Gavin MacGregor‡ with contributions bySMFoster, D J Hogg, J Miller, S Ramsay, A Saville, J A Sheridan, C Smith&JBStevenson ABSTRACT The excavation of a long timber-built structure of the early Neolithic near Callander (formerly Perthshire, now Stirling Council area) is described. The remains appear to be those of a structure measuring a maximum of c 24m by 8.5m with roughly straight sides and curved terminals, both of which have entrance gaps. About 1m in from both terminals is an arc of five posts; the interior is divided into between five and seven sections by these arcs and by a further three to five transverse screens or lines of posts. The pattern of division closely resembles that observed at the Neolithic site at Balbridie, Aberdeenshire1, and it is argued that Claish, like Balbridie, was a roofed building. At both sites a central area unencumbered by many posts was created, and a relatively greater density of posts in the southern part of the structure perhaps indicates the presence of an upper floor. The relatively clear area contained two pits in which fires had been set, in one case on a layer of pot sherds. Similarities to other, but probably un-roofed, timber structures of the Neolithic of Perthshire and Fife are noted and it is suggested that there was an architectural ‘vocabulary’ in use in the early Neolithic in east-central Scotland. Thirteen samples were radiocarbon-dated.

STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS 1988 No. 349 (S.36) LOCAL GOVERNMENT, SCOTLAND CHANGES IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS The Tayside and Grampian Regions and Angus and Kincardine and Deeside Districts (River North Esk) Boundaries Amendment Order 1988 Made - - - - 29th February 1988 Laid before Parliament 10th March 1988 Coming into force - - 1st April 1988 Whereas under section 17(1) of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973((1)) the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland on 10th November 1987 submitted to the Secretary of State a report on a review conducted under section 14(2) of that Act in which they made proposals for the transfer of certain areas between Angus District in Tayside Region and Kincardine and Deeside District in Grampian Region and in which they also made proposals for changes in electoral arrangements consequential on those changes in local government areas; Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 17(2) of the said Act, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, the Secretary of State hereby makes the following Order to give effect to the proposals of the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland as submitted to him: Title and commencement 1.
