Draft Mission Statement

The Pastoral Council has prepared a draft Mission Statement for Our Lady of Hope Parish. While not every suggestion can be accommodated, we welcome your feedback before finalizing. Please send comments or sugges- tions to Cindy Gilfoyle at [email protected] or 412-833- 0661. We, the parish community of Our Lady of Hope, have been called in Baptism to continue the mission of Christ to reveal the reality and beauty of God’s plan of salvation for all.

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we believe the Eucharist is the heart and source of our unity. As a Eucharistic people, we deepen our faith and build our community in love through education, spiritual renewal, service and stewardship. We exemplify our love by reaching out to those in need in the spirit of justice, charity, and service. We pledge, under the mantle of Our Lady of Hope, to preserve our legacy for future generations and commit ourselves to welcoming all as we live the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Communion Fasting Our Lady of Sorrows Little Lambs Question: Child Loss Ministry Do we need to fast for one hour before Mass, or one hour before communion?

Answer: The practice of fasting before receiving the Eucharist is a centuries-old act of devotion that was once very different than it is today. In the 1917 Code of Canon Law, for example, anyone who wanted to receive the Eucharist had to fast from midnight until the time of communion (even water and medica- tions were forbidden). Over the following decades, the rules for the

Eucharistic fast were relaxed, first by Pope Pius XII and, later, by Pope Saint Paul VI. Support and aid for families coping with grief from the loss The current Code of Canon Law (1983) states very clearly: “A person of a child that occurred recently who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one or long ago and support hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine” (Canon 919, §1). And, in the case of those who are child loss. ill and the elderly, the rules are even more accommodating, “The elderly, the infirm, and those who care for them can receive the Most Holy Eucharist even if they have eaten something within the preced- ing hour” (Canon 919, §3).

So, if we strictly follow the “letter of the law,” the fast is calculated 400 Hoodridge Drive , Castle Shannon, 15234 when we remember why we fast — it is a reminder of the deeper hungers of the spirit that our physical thirst or hunger symbolize — we see the issue is much bigger than simply fulfilling what is called 7:00 – 8:00 PM for by Church Law and tradition. Youth Group Meeting Please join us on Tuesday, April 6, 6:00-8:00 PM at St. Germaine Church. We will be discussing the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Contact Julianna with questions and also to help plan a headcount [email protected], or 412-480-6530.

Mass Attendance Growing Over the past few weeks we have happily noted an increase means we need to be more observant with where we sit. The increasing numbers of people attending Mass indicates a need to be more aware of where you place yourselves in a pew. We want to accommodate as many as possible while maintaining social distance. If you are sitting at the end of a pew and cannot move in to the center, please step into the aisle for a moment and allow others to enter the pew to occupy the empty socially distant spaces. As we continue through Lent and Easter, we thank you for being charitable to your fellow parishioners. We certainly appreciate everyone is being very mindful of the masking requirements and keeping socially dis- tant. May all the sacrifices we make this Lent help us to be more united to Our Lord Jesus in the celebration of His greatest sacrifice on the cross for our sins.

Faith Formation Thank You Our favorite CCD outreach program for the 2020-2021 year has been our work for the Red Door Ministry. During the first half of the year, CCD collected coins and held an Advent Raffle raising over $1,000 to be donated to Catholic Charities, earmarked to The Red Door Ministry. Our focus for the second half of the year

Gate inspired by Father Charley. In addition, over the last 12 weeks, 7th and 8th graders have packed over 2,000 lunch bags for the Red Door. Many parish families helped support these outreach projects and we are so very grateful for the support. Our students have learned a great deal about the Red Door Ministry as part of their service. To learn more about the Red Door Ministry and Father Chris Donley visit the Pittsburgh Catholic online, https://pittsburghcatholic.org/2021/03/12/red-door-doing-more-to-help-the-poor/ As the CCD year concludes, we are passing this outreach ministry on to Our Lady of Hope Youth Group. Our hope is that as COVID protocols are adjusted, they will be able to do some onsite volun- teer work soon. Until then, they will continue packing lunch bags every Tuesday at the beginning of their Youth Group meetings. If you have a high school who may be looking for National Honor Society hours and is interested in visiting with other teens from the parish, Tuesdays at St. Germaine may be the place from them? 10 MAKINGLIVE JESUS A DIFFERENCE

Rosarium Virginis Mariae October 16, 2002  Pope John Paul II

“The contemplation of Christ’s face cannot stop at the image of the Crucified One. He is the Risen One!” The rosary has expressed this knowledge born of faith and invited the believer to pass beyond the darkness of the Passion in order to gaze upon Christ’s glory in the Resurrection and Ascension. Contemplating the Risen One, Christians rediscover the reasons for their own faith.

Glorious Mysteries Prayed Sundays ordinary times & Wednesdays

1. The Resurrection—“Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; He is not here. Behold the place where they laid Him.” Fruit of this mystery: Faith

2. The Ascension—So then Lord Jesus, after He spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took His seat at the right hand of God. Fruit of this mystery Hope

3. Descent of the Holy Spirit—And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Fruit of this mystery Love of God

4. The Assumption—”You are the glory of Jerusalem! You are the great boast of our nation! You have done good things for Israel, and God is pleased with them. May the Almighty Lord bless you forever!” Fruit of this mystery Grace of a Happy Death

5. The Coronation—A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Fruit of this mystery Trust in Mary’s Intercession

Novena* The chaplet may be repeated over a period of nine days as part of a novena. According to St. Faustina’s Diary, Jesus Himself in a vision asked that the Divine Mercy Novena be prayed as a preparation for the Feast of the There is a prayer intention for specific group of people on each of the nine days.

For each of the nine days, our Lord gave Saint Faustina a different intention: All mankind, especially sinners; the souls of priests and religious; all devout and faithful souls; those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Jesus; the souls who have separated themselves from the Church; the meek and humble souls of little children; the souls who especially venerate and glorify His mercy; the souls detained in purgatory; and souls who have become lukewarm.

*Divine Mercy Novena pamphlets are available in all four of Our Lady of Hope Worship Sites.

In addition to the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and Novena, please reflect and meditate on the Seven Sorrows of Our Blessed Mother during Holy Week: 1) The prophecy of Simeon, 2) The flight into Egypt, 3) The loss of the Child Jesus for three days, 4) Mary meets Jesus on his way to Calvary, 5) The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus, 6) The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross, 7) The burial of Jesus
