Introduction George Palade shared the 1974 Nobel Prize with Albert Claude and Christian de Duve for their pioneering work in the characterization of organelles interrelated by the process of secretion in mammalian cells and tissues. These three scholars established the modern field of cell biology and the tools of cell fractionation and thin section transmission electron microscopy. It was Palade’s genius in particular that revealed the organization of the secretory pathway. He discovered the ribosome and showed that it was poised on the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) where it engaged in the vectorial translocation of newly synthesized secretory polypeptides (1). And in a most elegant and technically challenging investigation, his group employed radioactive amino acids in a pulse-chase regimen to show by autoradiograpic exposure of thin sections on a photographic emulsion that secretory proteins progress in sequence from the ER through the Golgi apparatus into secretory granules, which then discharge their cargo by membrane fusion at the cell surface (1). He documented the role of vesicles as carriers of cargo between compartments and he formulated the hypothesis that membranes template their own production rather than form by a process of de novo biogenesis (1). As a university student I was ignorant of the important developments in cell biology; however, I learned of Palade’s work during my first year of graduate school in the Stanford biochemistry department. -

His important contributions to physics were so many, and spread over such a wide range of fields and topics, that very few scientists are really qualified to write competently about his entire oeu- vre - and I regret not being one of these. I did not live close enough to him for a long enough time to be qualified to write about his life – his family, collaborators, and disciples can tell so much more. Hence, when Academician Maksimov asked me to write an article for the “collection of memoirs” that comprises this volume, I felt quite out of my depth. My only qualification is that I admired and loved both Vitaly Lazarevich and Nina Ivanovna Ginzburg. As I still do, as does eve- ryone in my family. They are simply wonderful people, we love them dearly, and we always felt that these feeling were reciprocated. Nina Ivanovna, perhaps because she had no children of her own, always showed some maternal love for Natasha, my wife, and Marijeta, our younger daugh- ter who is a scholar in Russian literature and who would visit Nina and Vitaly each time she passed through Moscow. You can feel the warmth radiating out of Photo 1, taken in the Ginzburg’s home about a year before their historic trip to Stockholm. This friendship and love is my most precious possession and this is where I wish to start my personal account. -

Christina Nilsson Sopran Den unga svenska sopranen Christina Nilsson inleder säsongen på Tiroler Festspiele där hon gör rollen som Elsa i Lohengrin. Christina Nilsson har föregående säsong framträtt i titelrollen som Aida i en konsertversion på Deutsche Oper i Berlin. Hon har även medverkat i galakonserten “Bolshoi and Plácido Domingo: Life in Opera” på Bolshoiteatern i Moskva. Förra säsongen sjöng Christina sin första Elsa i Lohengrin på Opernhaus Dortmund. Detta följdes av ytterligare en rolldebut då hon gjorde rollen som Grevinnan i Figaros Bröllop på Kungliga Operan i Stockholm. Christina medverkade även i ett flertal konserter, bland annat som solist vid Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkesters Valborgskonsert där hon, under ledning av Patrik Ringborg, framförde arior av Mozart, Wagner och Strauss, en konsert som direktsändes i Sveriges Radio P2, samt livestreamades på Berwaldhallen PLAY. Säsongen 2017-2018 fick Christina Nilsson sitt stora genombrott i och med sin uppmärksammade rolldebut som Aida på Kungliga Operan. Hon framträdde även på Stockholms Konserthus tillsammans med Kungliga Filharmonikerna, i samband med Riksdagens öppnande, och hon sjöng Strauss Vier letzte Lieder på Opéra national de Lorraine in Nancy. Christina var även solist under Stockholms Konserthus Trettondagskonsert. Den följande säsongen sjöng Christina Nilsson sin första Ariadne i Strauss Ariadne på Naxos på Oper Frankfurt, vilket följdes av samma roll på operan i Lausanne i Schweiz. Hon gjorde även ett gästframträdande som Aida på Irish National Opera i Dublin. Gaston Leroux's 1911 novel, The Phantom of the Opera, has a considerable number of allusions, some of which are accessible to modern American audiences, like references to Romeo and Juilet. Many of the references, however, are very specific to the operatic world or to other somewhat obscure fields. Knowledge of these allusions would greatly enhance the experience of readers of the novel, and would also contribute to their ability to interpret it. Thus my thesis aims to be helpful to those who read The Phantom of the Opera by providing a set of notes, as it were, to explain the allusions, with an emphasis on the extended allusion of the Palais Garnier and the historical models for the heroine, Christine Daae. Notes on Translations At the time of this writing, three English translations are commercially available of The Phantom of the Opera. -
