This week the Church remembers St. , 1601-80. He is one of our new in the upper area, clerestory, of the church. He was born into a poor farming family but was able to attend a Jesuit school at age 14. He later joined the Congregation of the Oratory; a community of priests and laity dedicated to prayer but who do not make vows. Upon his ordination in 1625, his vitality and zeal for the faith blossomed and bore fruit. He volunteered to care for victims of the plagues that struck Normandy. His missions gave him notoriety as an outstanding preacher, confessor and strong opponent of . (Jansenism was a religious movement which practiced such a severe austerity that seemed to deny grace.) In 1641, with the help of a devout and hardworking woman, Madeleine Lamy, he founded a refuge for destitute women in Caen, Normandy, under the direction of the Visitandines, a women’s religious order. When he founded the Congregation of and Mary at Caen, the Oratorians and Jansenists opposed him. Secular (diocesan) priests composed his new order and were dedicated to clerical reform in seminaries and to preaching missions. In 1650, the Bishop of Coutances invited him to establish a seminary. That same year the sisters at his refuge in Caen had become strong enough to leave the Visitandines and create a new congregation under the name of Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge. John founded four more seminaries from 1653 to 1670. In 1666 the Refuge sisters received Pope Alexander III's approval as an institute to care for penitent wayward women.

St. John Eudes was influenced by the teachings of the French school, St. , and the revelations of Sts. and (early 13th Cent). He formed his congregation of priests and women’s religious order in the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Holy Heart of Mary. All of his parish missions flowed from these two loves. For many years these had been private devotions. He adapted them into a devotion for the whole church when he wrote an Office of the Liturgy of the Hours and a Mass for the benefit of his communities. The feast of the Immaculate Heart of the Mother of God was celebrated for the first time on Feb 8, 1648 and that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Oct 20, 1672. Later, several bishops gave approval and the liturgy spread throughout the entire Church. He composed various rosaries and prayers dedicated to the Sacred Hearts. His book The Admirable Heart of the Most Holy Heart of the Mother of God is the first book ever written on the devotion to the Sacred Hearts. Pope Leo XIII called him, "Author of the Liturgical Worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Holy Heart of Mary.” - Fr. Weldon

One of the distinguishing marks of a vibrant parish is its prayer life. Prayer comes first for its individuals, families, and groups dedicated to many ministries. Prayer comes first for its pastor who wants his people to experience "more". All are solidly connected to Christ who leads them to the Father. We are that parish! Witness those who come to daily Mass, answer the call to Adoration, pray so many Rosaries and Chaplets, are attentive to family prayer, and offer their sufferings as a sharing in Christ's Redemption for the sake of others.

We need all of us to come together now for a special mission! DISCOVERING CHRIST will begin new weekly sessions Thursday, September 10, in our parish. We are asking for individuals and families to become Prayer Partners with the participants even before we know who they are! Pray now that those whom Christ is calling to a deeper relationship with Him will be open to His invitation. We will let you choose whom to pray for when the time comes. Please help us get the entire parish praying for an increase in Christ's life!

"I ask everyone to intensify in coming months love and devotion to the Eucharistic Jesus and to express in a courageous and clear way the real presence of the Lord." - Pope Benedict XIV (4/20/2005) ADORATION ANSWERS Question: What do I do for a whole hour? I can’t sit still that long.

Answer: A.C.T.S.! Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication. Spend time just loving God, tell him how much you love him. Examine your conscience. It’s something we should do daily, but so often it doesn’t cross our mind in the business of our daily lives. If there’s something big, plan on going to confession as soon as possible. But also don’t forget the little things that sadden God and injure your relationship with him. Then thank him for all he’s done for you. Take time to consider the tiniest things that happen in your life. At the end ask him for help to be more aware of the ways He is always there with us each day. Ask Him for help in those areas that we & others need him. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Before you know it the hour is over and you’ll wish you had more time! Dorothy Youngers Sister of Sylvester Brand In next week’s bulletin we’ll have more suggestions for prayer helps & books to consider reading. † Requiescat in Pace†
