In the interim, Shastye had enjoyed three blockbuster sales on the back of Secret Gesture=s racetrack success: MV Magnier had bought Sir Isaac Newton for 3.6 million gns in 2013; Charlie Gordon-Watson had spent 800,000gns on the Street Cry (Ire) filly Secret Soul (GB) in 2015; and David Redvers had bought another filly, Secret Gaze (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), for 1.35 million gns at this sale two years ago. After producing three consecutive fillies, Shastye threw another Galileo colt in 2016, and that one was again scooped up by MV Magnier for 1.3 million gns here last year. That is looking like a solid investment with the colt, now named Japan (GB), the winner of two races since the catalogued was printed, including the G2 Beresford S. on Sept. 30. • Written Evidence Submitted by the British Horseracing Authority
Written evidence submitted by the British Horseracing Authority Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee inquiry into impact of Covid-19 on DCMS sectors Introduction 1. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) – the governing and regulatory body for thoroughbred horseracing in Great Britain – welcomes the opportunity to respond to this inquiry into the impact of Covid-19 on DCMS sectors. This is an unprecedented crisis which is impacting every industry in the British economy and DCMS sectors. However, there are unique and specific challenges which our industry, working with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and other Government departments, is facing in the short and medium term. 2. British racing is the UK’s second largest sport behind football in respect of attendances, employment and revenues generated annually. In 2019, 5.62 million people attended over 1,500 individual race meetings held across England, Scotland and Wales. Our largest events are not only highlights in the increasingly competitive international racing calendar, but also the UK sporting and social calendar. British Racing’s cultural significance is demonstrated by the fact that ours is the only sport which has two annual nationwide events – the Grand National and The Derby –included on the Group A list of full live coverage protected events for FTA broadcast. The sport’s popularity has also once again been recently demonstrated with ITV Racing’s coverage of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on 6 June attracting an audience of 1.5 million viewers. 3. This translates into a significant economic benefit for the UK, with our industry generating £4.1 billion in direct, indirect and associated expenditure annually for the British economy.

  • The WH Stayers' Million
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, 31 January 2018 The WH Stayers’ Million In the most exciting development within the Stayers’ programme for many years, Weatherbys Hamilton has today announced a new initiative to celebrate, support and promote the staying horse – an animal that has defined the European thoroughbred for the last three hundred years. The WH Stayers’ Million is a prize of £1 million that will be awarded to the connections of a horse that having won one of four recognised prep races in May - Longines Sagaro Stakes (Ascot), Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes (Chester), Yorkshire Cup (York) or the Matchbook Henry II Stakes (Sandown Park) – then goes on to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June, the Qatar Goodwood Cup at the Qatar Goodwood Festival in July and the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York’s Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival in August. The £1 million would be split between the connections of the successful horse, with 70% awarded to the owner and 30% divided equally between the trainer, stable staff, breeder and jockey. The origins of thoroughbred racing are founded on the Stayer with the original match races often taking place over extended distances. The legendary Eclipse (foaled in 1764), features in almost all the pedigrees of the modern thoroughbred and he habitually raced at distances of three to four miles. Despite the recent trend towards breeding more precocious horses for shorter distances, it is the Stayers who remain for many the real Trojans of the turf. Their battles over nearly two miles or more have made magnificent spectacles and live long in the memory.

  • Media Guide Welcome to Royal Ascot from Her Majesty’S Representative
MEDIA GUIDE WELCOME TO ROYAL ASCOT FROM HER MAJESTY’S REPRESENTATIVE May I wish a warm welcome to the world’s media in this very special Diamond Jubilee year. Her Majesty The Queen has owned no fewer than 63 Ascot winners, 20 of them at the Royal Meeting, and it’s always a great thrill for everyone when the Royal colours are successful. It would be marvellous for that to happen this year. We recall the perfect timing in Silver Jubilee year when dual Classic-winning Dunfermline provided tremendous success for The Queen. As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, we are staging a very special exhibition titled “60 years of Royal Ascot during the Reign of Her Majesty The Queen.” Situated beside the pre-parade ring, this is a photographic commemoration of the Royal Family at Ascot over the past 60 years. Central to the Royal Meeting is the fact that, on the track, we have the finest programme of races anywhere in the world. We have increased our prize money this year by £715,000 and now offer £4.5 million across the 30 races of the five-day meeting. None of the races are worth less than £55,000. Two of our races offer prize money of £500,000 each. We have renamed The Golden Jubilee Stakes. From this year it is The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and with prize money of £500,000 it is Britain’s most valuable sprint race. Royal Ascot’s two legs of the Global Sprint Challenge, The King’s Stand Stakes on Tuesday and The Diamond Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, will again feature a truly cosmopolitan field of runners.

An original sponsor of the inaugural Championships back in 2013, we very much look forward to seeing their branding across the four ARC All-Weather racecourses, and working with their team to offer their customers some fantastic sporting action over the winter. Equally, we are incredibly grateful for the support of Sun Racing’s sponsorship of the Mile category along with Be Wiser who continue in their role as ‘Official Partner’ of the All-Weather Championships. After two seasons of sponsorship, Betway have established themselves as a major partner of All-Weather racing in Britain, and we look forward to more fantastic racing under their banner, with feature races including the Betway Winter Derby and Betway Easter Classic. Finals Day 2018 was one that will be very much remembered as the day the French came to Lingfield Park, with three winners in Funny Kid, Lucky Team and subsequent Royal Ascot runner up City Light. We once again look forward to a strong challenge from our friends across the channel along with competition from Ireland also.
