JULY SALE RETURNS in TRADITIONAL FORMAT by T.D WEDNESDAY, 7 JULY 2021 JULY SALE RETURNS IN ARQANA AUGUST YEARLING CATALOGUE ANNOUNCED TRADITIONAL FORMAT The Arqana August Yearling Sale features a catalogue of 355 blue-blooded colts and fillies as it returns to its regular slot in the calendar from Aug. 14-16 in Deauville. The first two days will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the final day, Monday, will start at 1 p.m. The sale has produced many stakes winners over the years including G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), and fellow Group 1 winners Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), and Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) among others. In 2021, the catalogue boasts 19 siblings or half-siblings to Group 1 winners, and in Part I of the sale, over half of the yearlings selected are out of black-type mares and a quarter of the yearlings are siblings or half-siblings to group winners. Last year's auction was reduced to two days, with an extra mixed sale introduced in August to allow for the fact that racing had only resumed from its enforced shutdown in early June. The number of horses catalogued and the resulting turnover were therefore significantly reduced in 2020, but we can expect to see a return to the level of trade witnessed in the preceding four years, when an aggregate of between 12 and 14 million gns was posted in what can be considered pretty consistent trade at this popular midsummer sale. Granted, there will still likely be fewer international visitors on site for the horses-in-training section but, as we have seen over the past year, the option of online buying platforms and interaction with agents on the ground have been taken up readily by buyers from afar. Stars from home and abroad set to shine in £270,000 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup 15th April 2016 Frankie Dettori, Jamie Spencer, Silvestre de Sousa and Emma-Jayne Wilson have been confirmed as team captains for the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup; the world’s premier international jockey’s competition at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 6th August. 2016 will also see a further increase in prize money with all six races now worth £45,000 (£40,000 last year). Each participant will get five rides as they bid to win the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for their team. Last year saw the Girls team lift the trophy for the first time when they claimed three of the six races. Emma-Jayne Wilson, who captained them to victory, is back and will be joined by Michelle Payne from Australia, and Ireland’s Cathy Gannon. Payne made history last November when becoming the first female to win the Melbourne Cup, on the 100-1 shot Prince of Penzance, while Gannon became the first female Irish Champion Apprentice in 2004 and has enjoyed considerable success since moving to the UK in 2006, notching over 300 winners here. Wilson is Canada’s most successful female jockey having ridden over 1,000 winners. This will be her fifth Shergar Cup appearance. Wilson said: “Last year was amazing and I am so proud to have been part of the first Girls team to win. I am looking forward to reminding everyone what a powerful force we are. The Shergar Cup provides a great opportunity for us girls to prove we are as good as some of the world’s best male jockeys.

  • Written Evidence Submitted by the British Horseracing Authority
Written evidence submitted by the British Horseracing Authority Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee inquiry into impact of Covid-19 on DCMS sectors Introduction 1. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) – the governing and regulatory body for thoroughbred horseracing in Great Britain – welcomes the opportunity to respond to this inquiry into the impact of Covid-19 on DCMS sectors. This is an unprecedented crisis which is impacting every industry in the British economy and DCMS sectors. However, there are unique and specific challenges which our industry, working with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and other Government departments, is facing in the short and medium term. 2. British racing is the UK’s second largest sport behind football in respect of attendances, employment and revenues generated annually. In 2019, 5.62 million people attended over 1,500 individual race meetings held across England, Scotland and Wales. Our largest events are not only highlights in the increasingly competitive international racing calendar, but also the UK sporting and social calendar. British Racing’s cultural significance is demonstrated by the fact that ours is the only sport which has two annual nationwide events – the Grand National and The Derby –included on the Group A list of full live coverage protected events for FTA broadcast. The sport’s popularity has also once again been recently demonstrated with ITV Racing’s coverage of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on 6 June attracting an audience of 1.5 million viewers. 3. This translates into a significant economic benefit for the UK, with our industry generating £4.1 billion in direct, indirect and associated expenditure annually for the British economy.
