JULY SALE RETURNS IN ARQANA AUGUST YEARLING CATALOGUE ANNOUNCED TRADITIONAL FORMAT The Arqana August Yearling Sale features a catalogue of 355 blue-blooded colts and fillies as it returns to its regular slot in the calendar from Aug. 14-16 in Deauville. The first two days will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the final day, Monday, will start at 1 p.m. The sale has produced many stakes winners over the years including G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), and fellow Group 1 winners Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), and Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) among others. In 2021, the catalogue boasts 19 siblings or half-siblings to Group 1 winners, and in Part I of the sale, over half of the yearlings selected are out of black-type mares and a quarter of the yearlings are siblings or half-siblings to group winners. Cont. p4 The stallion Garswood is the last horse through the ring on Wednesday | IN TDN AMERICA TODAY By Emma Berry NEWMARKET, UKCCWith what could be the final sale in HARVEY PACK PASSES AT 94 Britain to be held under Covid restrictions, Tattersalls launches Former New York racing personality Harvey Pack died in New its three-day July Sale in Newmarket on Wednesday, when fillies York City on Tuesday at 94. Trade TDN America. on Thursday and Friday will be conducted in morning and evening sessions around racing on the nearby July Course. Last year's auction was reduced to two days, with an extra mixed sale introduced in August to allow for the fact that racing had only resumed from its enforced shutdown in early June. The number of horses catalogued and the resulting turnover were therefore significantly reduced in 2020, but we can expect to see a return to the level of trade witnessed in the preceding four years, when an aggregate of between 12 and 14 million gns was posted in what can be considered pretty consistent trade at this popular midsummer sale. Granted, there will still likely be fewer international visitors on site for the horses-in-training section but, as we have seen over the past year, the option of online buying platforms and interaction with agents on the ground have been taken up readily by buyers from afar. The death of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum in March cast a long shadow over the sport, which has been lessened by the recent announcement that his daughter Sheikha Hissa is keen to continue his labour of love that is the Shadwell breeding empire. Below him, both Pierro and Star Witness are sitting on 97 THE 100 CLUB winners apiece. Not A Single Doubt and Tavistock (NZ) recently hit the 100 mark, with the latter a particularly interesting addition. Tavistock, who passed away at Cambridge Stud in the summer of 2019, is the only horse within the 100 Club that wasn=t, or isn=t, standing in Australia. Last season, he managed 85 winners, and before that 55. Tavistock=s results this season, with still three weeks to go, put him in rare air when it=s considered that very few New Zealand-standing horses have reached 100 winners in Australia, excepting the likes of Zabeel (NZ). As the table currently stands, there are 16 sires among the fray with 100 winners, with potentially two more if Pierro and Star Witness get over the line. By history=s account, this is a bumper harvest. On average since season 2009/10, there have been 13 stallions seasonally reaching the mark of 100 winners, with 2017/18 an exception when 18 sires reached that benchmark.

DR. RICK ARTHUR Q&A: PART TWO ICONIC NEW YORK RACING by Dan Ross BROADCASTER HARVEY After 15 years as California's equine medical director, Dr. Rick Arthur has stepped away from the post. A vocal proponent of PACK DIES AT 94 tightened welfare practices in the sport, Arthur has spearheaded during his tenure a slew of equine safety reforms that have made California arguably the most stringent regulatory environment in the States. Arthur's forthrightness, however, has led to him staking out positions that have at times proven polarizing. The day after Arthur officially stepped down, he conducted a Q&A with the TDN, the first part of which can be seen here. In it, he discussed his tenure as California racing's chief veterinarian, the impending implementation of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, and the recent controversy created by a Washington Post report into his investigation into a series of sudden deaths among Bob Baffert trainees between 2011 and 2013. RA: No, I haven't heard back and the state auditor's office told me not to expect to hear back. I'm sure Commissioner Gonzales knows that I filed a whistleblower complaint.
