Athletics

It has been a busy term for athletes at the College competing in the South East Area Championships, County Schools Championships, Partnership Games, Sainsburys’ Track and Field Cup and 8 Schools Meet at Gresham’s. 21 College athletes won their events at the South East area competition and qualified at the County Finals. On a very wet day, the athletes performed incredibly well and the College won 5 gold medals; William Worley junior boys javelin, Peace Joshua junior boys shot, Louisa Acton junior girls discus, Jaden Jonson junior boys triple jump and Warwick Davey junior boys high jump.

In the South Norfolk Schools Partnership championships, the College teams of boys and girls won every age group and the overall trophy. Winners on this day progressed to the Norfolk Finals. College athletes had an equally successful day at the Norfolk Schools Partnership Games Athletics Finals. Representing South Norfolk our students won County titles; Henry Lethbridge Year 10 Boys 300m, Sean Gachara Year 10 Boys 800m, Feranmi Afolabi Year 7 Boys 100m and 200m, Joe Machin Year 7 Boys 800m and 1500m, Bea Honeybone Year 9 Girls javelin, Louisa Acton year 9 Girls Discus, Faith Ayilara Year 7 Girls Shot, Erica Clemming, Georgia Pegg and Evie Marlee who made up ¾ of the year 8 Girls 4 x 100 metres relay team.

Many of these athletes then rushed back to College and competed for their Houses in our Annual Sports Day.

With events having taken place earlier in the week, the competition culminated with the afternoon of Sports Day. Following an extremely well-choreographed parade to musical accompaniment, all athletes regardless of their ability showed great pride, positivity and passion in a wide variety of events. The year competitions were based on a combined score of boys and girls in their respective houses and the winners were:

The College Junior Boys, Junior Girls (Years 7 and 8), Inter Boys and Inter Girls (Years 9 and10) had a very successful run in the Sainsburys’ Track and Field Cup with all four teams qualifying for the East Anglia Regional Final at Watford. In this event, each student has to compete in one field event and one track event. It is their performance not position that obtains the team points. In extremely poor weather conditions all athletes performed admirably with the Junior Boys finishing 2nd, Inter Boys 6th, Junior Girls 4th and Inter Girls 8th.

Tennis

The Tennis fixtures started with teams from the U12s / U13s / U14s playing some very friendly but competitive matches against Kings Ely in the first half of the Summer Term. It was a great start to the season and offered us some valuable doubles practice.

The girls have had a very busy tennis season although rain did stop play at times. We have had excellent commitment to training, many team players training 3 times a week. We entered an U13 A and B team and U15 A and B team in to the league. The U13 A had two very close matches drawing both, and then unfortunately losing in the shoot-out. The U13 B team did well to come second to Hethersett Academy in their group. The U15 A-team had tough opposition against Norwich High, Norwich School and Acle High School. The U15B team did well to win four matches against Bungay, Hethersett Academy, Hethersett Old Hall and Aylsham. The U13 girls’ team also had a number of close but enjoyable matches against the Beeston girls on a very hot afternoon, reaching 30 degrees. Well done girls, keep enjoying your tennis over the summer holidays.

Girls Rugby

This year has seen the introduction of girls’ rugby. We will look to build on this next year as the involvement of girls in this sport in Norfolk continues to grow. Wymondham Rugby Club youth coach Amanda Jones has helped us link with the Rugby Club and many of the girls have joined as a result. Over time, it would be great to see more of the girls attending the rugby club and ultimately enhance their skills and experience further. Last week saw 16 girls attend an emerging schools tournament at Norwich Rugby Club in which 10 teams took part. We entered two teams of year 9 and 10 girls, some good results against some tough opposition. The winners of the day were Wymondham High, but our game against them was much closer than back in December, showing just how much the girls have improved.

Cricket

The girls’ cricket season started straight after Easter with the under 13 girls travelling to Cambridge for the Lady Taverners’ School Indoor Regional Finals. The girls were a credit to the College, finishing fourth overall with wins against Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire.

Unfortunately, the weather then got the better of us with no fewer than seven matches and one tournament cancelled.

The under 15 girls were entered into a National competition for the first time this year and can be very proud of themselves with initial wins against Leicester Grammar and Stamford School but then just fell short of reaching the final 16. They also experienced a match against a boys’ team, losing out by just 15 runs.

We entered an U14 team in the inaugural King’s Ely festival and came away as runners-up.

The U12s and U13s were very unlucky with two of their three matches also falling foul to the weather but they did manage to sneak a win against Beeston Hall before the end of term.

The boys’ cricket season was badly hit by the rain this summer with 24 matches rained off, including 4 weekend blocks of matches. However, of the matches played around 50% were won.

The first XI were hit the most by the weather and had six matches rained off and only played five in the end. The highlights of the season were beating Gresham’s second XI and a narrow loss to the Wymondham College Old Boys XI last week, where Jacob Rhodes hit an excellent 81 runs. Daisy Eke and Kyle Weston were the pick of the bowlers this season along with James Bridges who has become an excellent all-rounder and must be congratulated on being called up to play for Northants Senior 2nd XI team this summer.

11 students have represented Norfolk at cricket this summer, a fantastic achievement:

Another 6 boys were selected for the Norwich MCC Foundation Hub teams at U15 and U13 age groups.

The highlight for the U15s was Chris Mills hitting 101 in a T20 match against Wisbech.

The U14s are County Champions having beaten SET rivals Framingham Earl in the final.

Rounders

The summer term sees the start of what feels like a very short Rounders Season. At the start of the term, with glorious weather, the U12s / U13s U14s/U15s all managed to start their league games and had a record turnout, at every age, for the extra-curricular clubs too.

All four squads had their first games against Archbishop Sancroft High School. Away at ASHS the U12s showed great teamwork when fielding and with some developing hitters they managed to win the game 11/6.5, with Player of the Match being Amelia Warnes. The U13s had an amazing first fielding session and they managed to get all of the opposition batters out in 14 balls and then went on to score 13 rounders in their first innings! After some more impressive teamwork they came away as winners 23/12, with the POM being Annie Birchall.

ASHS came to The College for the U14 & U15 matches and after a little spot of rain we saw some accurate bowling and backstop skills in two very competitive innings. The final scores were U14s winning 12.5/10.5 and the U15s finishing 16/12.5

The following week the U12s and U13s travelled to Hobart High School for their matches. The U12s had a very impressive first innings winning it quite comfortably 10.5 / 2.5. It was Hobart’s first game and they were very nervous. Our U12s played well in the second innings keeping the fielding very tight and ended up winning 16/9. The POM was Alice Brand. The U13s squad fielded some different players for this match who brought different skills to the team. Our highest scorers were Poppy Jeffrey & Clemmie Abell-Plant and Poppy and Rosie Smith were chosen by Hobart as POM. It was a very tight game with only one rounder difference after the first 20 ball innings and sadly the final score ended up 12/14.5 to Hobart.

A very wet spell of weather after May half-term saw a number of matches being postponed and because of a lack of availability the matches with Long Stratton were not played but the points were shared. All age-groups managed at least 3 wins with U12s, U13s and U15s going through to the Semi-Finals of the League. It has really been a spirited effort by all year groups – so well done!
