Women’s Yoga Goddess Gathering with Evelyn Krull _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ E n c h a n t e d F o c u s e d C o n n e c t e d Yogita Yoga 1/435 Fullarton Road Highgate SA 5063 Greek Goddess Archetypes Discover your own inner goddess Virgin Goddesses: personify the independent, active non-relationship aspects of women’s psychology; when a virgin goddess is active in you, your pursuits are on the forefront of your mind to develop your own talents and realise your dreams - Artemis: Goddess of the hunt and the Moon; personification of an independent feminine spirit; enables women to seek her own goals on terrain of her own choosing o Difficulties: Artemis never suffered (she was never victimised) but has imparted suffering on others who offended her or where standing in her way or threatened those under her protection o Ways to grow: Artemis women need to develop her receptive, relationship oriented self and needs to become vulnerable, so that she can give and receive - Athena: Goddess of wisdom and crafts; known for a winning strategies and practical solutions; as an archetype is following by logical women, who are ruled by their heads, rather than hearts o Difficulties: Athena never loses her head, heart or control, never overwhelmed by emotions, irrational feelings or impulsive behaviour; if not countered by another archetype, becomes one-dimensional and cuts herself off from aspects that need to grow o Ways to grow: Athena women need to turn inward, silence the ‘turning wheels in her mind’ and recover the inner child - Hestia: Goddess of hearth and temple; her presence as a goddess was central to everyday life; Hestia provides women with a feeling of intactness and wholeness o Difficulties: Hestia lacks attachment that may cause women to feel lonely and isolated; she’s the only goddess not represented in human form as such women with an Hestia archetype may lack personality, practical skills of conflict resolution (rather than avoidance) and an identity o Ways to grow: as an introverted person, it is difficult for Hestia to venture beyond the house and hearth and confront the competitive nature of the real world; she needs to develop aspects that allow her to become her own self and stand up to herself _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ E n c h a n t e d F o c u s e d C o n n e c t e d Page 2 of 4 Vulnerable Goddesses: represent the traditional roles of women: wife, mother and daughter; in Greek mythology, they were all either abducted, raped or dominated; their well-being is highly dependent on the relationship that they are in - Hera: Goddess of marriage, commitment maker and wife; as a goddess she was revered and reviled, honoured and humiliated; she has strong positive and negative attributes, capable of intense joy and pain o Difficulties: Hera can be a compelling force and can be hugely destructive if not countered by another archetype o Ways to grow: understanding that Hera is an archetype within you is the first step to healing an over-powering of Hera in you; Hera women marry too early, too willingly and succumb to the needs of their husbands/partners; she chooses her partners on her first come – first serve basis rather on what is right for her. Hera can become too dependent in a relationship to the degree that she loses herself in her role as wife. - Demeter: Demeter represents the mother and maternal instincts fulfilled by pregnancy and bearing children and providing physical, psychological and spiritual nourishment to others. She can turn to depression if her need to nurture others is taken away from her. o Difficulties: Demeter could not control the abduction of her daughter Persephone and felt powerless and victimised; Demeter archetypes feel easily out of control and her sense of worth is too dependent on caring for others; they are prone to depression and anger o Ways to grow: Demeter has trouble seeing the whole picture as she is biased towards her loved ones and her caring and as such has difficulty saying ‘no’. She needs to let go of passive-aggressive behaviour and find meaning in her own life apart from others. - Persephone: While Hera and Demeter represent active archetypes, Persephone is an archetype that is more acted upon rather than being active herself; Persephone is compliant and prefers to be passive and seeks out to be protected and for others to make decisions. Persephone was abducted in her youth and although freed by her mother’s efforts, she had to spend a significant amount of time at Hade’s side in the Underworld. o Difficulties: Persephone was for a long-time a powerless, abducted and raped bride of the Underworld god Hades. Some women become stuck in this phase of abducted and victimised daughter and cannot rise to be what Persephone eventually became: Queen of the Underworld; women with Persephone in their _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ E n c h a n t e d F o c u s e d C o n n e c t e d Page 3 of 4 archetypes are easily dominated by others, she suffers a lack of direction and drive; however, she also has the most potential for growth. o Ways to grow: Whatever she does (marriage, career) a Persephone woman needs to commit without secretly crossing her fingers, so that she can grow and be the woman of her potential; it’s oftentimes traumatic events such as a divorce, break-up or leaving the protected home of the parents that forces Persephone to confront her own passivity and rise above it. The Alchemical Goddess: Aphrodite receives a category of her own as the alchemical goddess to represent her magic process and power of transformation that is unique to her in Greek mythology. Aphrodite is an awesome presence, who caused mortals and deities to fall in love with her, who inspired artists and poets and turned statues into living beings; she symbolises the transformative and creative power of love. - Aphrodite: The Aphrodite archetype governs women’s enjoyment of love and beauty, sexuality and sensuality; Aphrodite exerts a powerful force on all that she touches; Aphrodite compels women to fulfil creative and procreative functions. o Difficulties: Women with Aphrodite in their archetype tend to be extroverted with a lust for life and with a fiery element in her personality; her desire for sexual connections and generating erotic energy may cause problems in the current society where she would be considered a tease or a whore; her warm and genuinely loving side is often misread as a come-on and she is mistrusted by both men and women and seen as competition or threat by the latter. o Ways to grow: Knowing that Aphrodite is in your archetype will help you understand why people gravitate towards you in a sensual, sexual way and that you exude an energy that is highly seductive. You must free yourself from guilt and develop other archetypes such as Artemis or Athena who can help you channel your energy into productive, constructive and creative projects or ventures. With the transformative powers inherent to her archetype, Aphrodite women have enormous potential to fulfil her dreams and reach new heights of consciousness.
