PA23 7QN Tel; 01369 701930 The office is on the coast road about 2 miles south of Dunoon on the West bank of the river Clyde and opposite Inverkip Marina on the other side of the river. Local directions: From Dunoon: Head South along the shore road and out of Dunoon , towards Inellan and Toward (with the sea to your left). After around 2 miles you will see a bus stop along with a sign for Avondale Lane on your right. Turn in to Avondale Lane and then left at the top of the lane. Note: If you pass the ‘Balaclava Garage’ on your left, you have gone about 400 yards too far. From Caledonian Macbrayne Ferry: Turn left from the ferry and head south on the shore road. Then follow the directions above. From Western Ferry: Turn left from the ferry and follow the shore road in to Dunoon. When you come across the first mini roundabout turn left. Turn left again at the next mini roundabout. You will pass the Cal Mac ferry terminal and you can then stick to the coast road heading south and follow the directions above. From Glasgow; Head West along the M8 from Glasgow passing Glasgow Airport. The M8 turns in to the A8 which takes you to Greenock. Stay on the main road all the way through Greenock following signs for Gourock and Ferries to Dunoon. Then take Cal Mac (every hour) or Western Ferries (every half-hour) to the Argyll side and follow local directions above.

This has ensured the continued provision of a passenger ferry service, under the terms set out in the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Service contract.

The existing linkspan in not proposed to be removed but will remain in situ to provide a fall back service including mechanical failure to allow vessels to continue to moor at the site giving shore access to the crew.

Update by Caledonian MacBrayne to issues raised on 17 June 2019 Point 1 Please find attached the historic carryings for the Gourock Dunoon route as requested at the meeting. Whilst our service planning teams do take long term trends into account as and when any reviews are carried out this is not part of the regular reporting provided by ourselves at the Cowal Transport Forum or elsewhere in the network. The content and format of the reports we provide are as agreed with Transport Scotland and the various network stakeholder groups and have been reached after much discussion to ensure a standard approach is provided for all stakeholders. Point 2 We were asked to confirm that all cancelled sailings when Western Ferries are operating are covered by the replacement bus service. Unfortunately this is not always possible because of the weather conditions i.e. Western Ferries may not be taking high sided vehicles. In addition the bus companies also have to factor in sufficient time to allow their vehicles to travel across to the destination port, drive to Gourock/Dunoon, drop off and collect any passengers and then return via Western Ferries. Both bus operators should however fulfil a service as late as possible in accordance to the Western Ferries Timetable, the last bus departures should be; Monday to Thursday ex Dunoon 20:50, ex Gourock 21:40. Friday & Saturday ex Dunoon 22:10, ex Gourock 22:40. Sunday ex Dunoon 20:50, ex Gourock 21:20. The Islay – Jura Overland Route
The Islay – Jura Overland Route At a time when the construction of a new vessel for Islay is to be considered, it is opportune to consider an alternative that can provide more capacity and greater frequency in a more cost effective and environmentally friendly manner – namely – the Islay-Jura “overland” option. This option features two short and frequent ferry crossings firstly across the Sound of Jura between Keills (Knapdale) and Lagg (Jura) and secondly, as currently in operation across the Sound of Islay between Feolin (Jura) and Port Askaig (Islay). BACKGROUND The “overland” option was recommended in 1967 by the Highland Transport Board who strongly favoured it on the grounds that, at up to ten round trips per day, it would give the much higher frequency of service, which, to quote, “has proved so important in attracting traffic”, as compared with up to three round trips per day on the then relatively long Tarbert route. As described at the time, much greater capacity of 200 cars per day would be provided in each direction by a 20 car ferry (20x10 = 200) as compared with 120 cars per day in each direction by a 40 car capacity ferry via Tarbert (40x3 = 120). The cost of building and operating the Overland style vessels and terminals were calculated to be less than for the Tarbert route. The downside was the cost of upgrading the 17.37 miles (A 846) and 10.97 miles (B 8025) of substandard roads on Jura and Knapdale respectively. The Board recommended that “the cost of the necessary road works should be regarded as part of a comprehensive plan to improve sea and road transport approaches to Islay”.

RURAL ECONOMY AND CONNECTIVITY COMMITTEE INQUIRY INTO CONSTRUCTION AND PROCUREMENT OF FERRY VESSELS IN SCOTLAND SUBMISSION FROM ARGYLL AND BUTE COUNCIL Introduction This response represents Officer views from Argyll and Bute Council and further input is available from a Senior Officer should this be required by the Committee when considering this call for views. Argyll and Bute is the second largest geographic area of any Scottish Local Authority and the area is characterised by its diverse geography with 23 inhabited islands and long peninsulas. Ferry Services provide lifeline connections to Argyll and Bute’s inhabited islands and peninsular communities and they are essential to support a sustainable, well connected economy. In addition, unlike other forms of public transport there are often no effective alternatives to the links currently provided by ferry services in Argyll and Bute. The ferry network must be reliable, high quality, affordable and flexible and services future proofed in order to meet the needs of our communities and realise predicted growth in key sectors such as tourism, food and drink (including agriculture, aquaculture and fishing), forestry and renewable energy in Argyll and Bute. An uplift in economic activity is vital to reverse the trend of declining populations in some of our rural and island communities and improved transport and connectivity is essential for these communities to thrive. Ferry services are an essential part of the transport network and economy of the West Coast of Scotland and the Scottish Government have a critical role to play in the development, funding, and delivery of ferry services within Argyll and Bute.
