Western :

Sound of Scarba was in the James Watt Dock for annual overhaul till T 17 Feb – she resumed service F 18. Sound of Sanda followed her to Garvel for annual overhaul/survey (afloat) on Th 3 Mar.

Other News: Captain Jimmy Peacock (ex CSP master) died (announced F 4 Mar). Alastair Henderson, ex-MD , appointed CalMac Commercial Manager M 28 Feb. RMT, under militant leader Bob Crowe, organized a strike ballot of 600 CalMac members re assurances of no redundancies in the event of the Company not winning the Dunoon tender, meanwhile the Scottish Executive conformed that their advert was merely for “expressions of interest” and was not an invitation to tender. Clyde Marine’s Cruiser and The Second Snark were together in Garvel Drydock for annual overhaul/survey from M 7 Feb till T 15. A ‘massive’ campaign was launched to try to halt the proposal to divert the Renfrew to Braehead. & Bute Council has admitted that the new Dunoon Linkspan needs remedial work and steelwork replacement before it can used. The main portal unit is to be replaced by the manufacturers at their own expense, and the work is expected to take around two weeks. Argyll & Bute Council has approved a grant of £10,000 towards the cost of refurbishing Blairmore Pier. The pier is expected to reopen on May 22 with a special call by Waverley to mark the occasion. A proposal for a fixed link to the island of Luing has been rejected by Argyll & Bute Council. Instead, new slipways are to be provided. Hebridean Princess returned to Oban for the season on W 23 Feb. The small Skye community of Glenelg has decided by 60 votes to 39, not to go ahead with the purchase of the ferry Glenachulish. The owner of the ferry, Roddy Macleod, has now advertised it for sale. 2004 was P&O’s best ever year on Cairnryan-Larne. Lady of Mann is due to visit Troon on 20/21 May. Northlink’s Hjaltland went to Frederikshavn, Denmark, for her annual overhaul and survey. She was there from Su 20 Feb till T 1 Mar. On her return, her sister Hrossey went for her annual overhaul. Hendra has been at Lerwick for major upgrade and re-engining (with Fivla and Fylga on Bluemull Sound); Leirna has been at Fraserburgh for docking (Bigga and Geira on Whalsay); Dagalien was off for 5 hours on Su 13 Feb (picked up debris). A wrangle has broken out between the owners of the new Loch Tay steamboat Spirit of Loch Tay and her builders, Ferguson Shipbuilders. It is alleged that the hull of the new vessel suffers from defects.
