Alastair Henderson, ex-MD Orkney Ferries, appointed CalMac Commercial Manager M 28 Feb. RMT, under militant leader Bob Crowe, organized a strike ballot of 600 CalMac members re assurances of no redundancies in the event of the Company not winning the Dunoon tender, meanwhile the Scottish Executive conformed that their advert was merely for “expressions of interest” and was not an invitation to tender. Clyde Marine’s Cruiser and The Second Snark were together in Garvel Drydock for annual overhaul/survey from M 7 Feb till T 15. A ‘massive’ campaign was launched to try to halt the proposal to divert the Renfrew Ferry to Braehead. Argyll & Bute Council has admitted that the new Dunoon Linkspan needs remedial work and steelwork replacement before it can used. The main portal unit is to be replaced by the manufacturers at their own expense, and the work is expected to take around two weeks. Argyll & Bute Council has approved a grant of £10,000 towards the cost of refurbishing Blairmore Pier. The pier is expected to reopen on May 22 with a special call by Waverley to mark the occasion. A proposal for a fixed link to the island of Luing has been rejected by Argyll & Bute Council. Instead, new slipways are to be provided. Hebridean Princess returned to Oban for the season on W 23 Feb. The small Skye community of Glenelg has decided by 60 votes to 39, not to go ahead with the purchase of the ferry Glenachulish. The owner of the ferry, Roddy Macleod, has now advertised it for sale. 2004 was P&O’s best ever year on Cairnryan-Larne. Lady of Mann is due to visit Troon on 20/21 May. Northlink’s Hjaltland went to Frederikshavn, Denmark, for her annual overhaul and survey. She was there from Su 20 Feb till T 1 Mar. On her return, her sister Hrossey went for her annual overhaul. Hendra has been at Lerwick for major upgrade and re-engining (with Fivla and Fylga on Bluemull Sound); Leirna has been at Fraserburgh for docking (Bigga and Geira on Whalsay); Dagalien was off for 5 hours on Su 13 Feb (picked up debris). A wrangle has broken out between the owners of the new Loch Tay steamboat Spirit of Loch Tay and her builders, Ferguson Shipbuilders. It is alleged that the hull of the new vessel suffers from defects..

    Island Studies Journal , Vol. 11, No. 2, 2016, pp. 343-358 Mapping the Outer Hebrides in sound: towards a sonic methodology Cathy Lane University of the Arts London, United Kingdom [email protected] ABSTRACT: Scottish Gaelic is still widely spoken in the Outer Hebrides, remote islands off the West Coast of Scotland, and the islands have a rich and distinctive cultural identity, as well as a complex history of settlement and migrations. Almost every geographical feature on the islands has a name which reflects this history and culture. This paper discusses research which uses sound and listening to investigate the relationship of the islands’ inhabitants, young and old, to placenames and the resonant histories which are enshrined in them and reveals them, in their spoken form, as dynamic mnemonics for complex webs of memories. I speculate on why this ‘place-speech’ might have arisen from specific aspects of Hebridean history and culture and how sound can offer a new way of understanding the relationship between people and island toponymies. In my creative practice I compose concert works and gallery installations. I am interested in the semantic and the abstract sonic qualities of all this material and I use it to construct “docu-music” (Lane, 2006).

Turn left again at the next mini roundabout. You will pass the Cal Mac ferry terminal and you can then stick to the coast road heading south and follow the directions above. From Glasgow; Head West along the M8 from Glasgow passing Glasgow Airport. The M8 turns in to the A8 which takes you to Greenock. Stay on the main road all the way through Greenock following signs for Gourock and Ferries to Dunoon. Then take Cal Mac (every hour) or Western Ferries (every half-hour) to the Argyll side and follow local directions above.

This has ensured the continued provision of a passenger ferry service, under the terms set out in the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Service contract.

We are very grateful to all the responses that we received. We hope you find the information easy to understand and of interest to you and your community. We are pleased to see that the thematic areas of Natural Space, Feeling Safe, Identity and Sense of Belonging and Social Contact came out with the highest scores, needing the least improvement, when considering Argyll and Bute as a whole. The engagement has been undertaken at a place-based level and respondents provided their postcode, groupings of postcodes have created the settlement/community level detail. The results are available for community groups and partner agencies to use, for example, to assist with service planning or for community-led action plans. Please note: The information is the views of individuals who responded to the engagement. We trust that the information provided will be viewed within the context of which it is provided. We are grateful to all those who have taken part in the consultation and believe in sharing information for openness and transparency. Stunning shell sand beaches fringed with machair, vast expanses of moorland, rugged hills, dramatic cliffs and surrounding seas all contain a rich biodiversity of flora, fauna and marine life. Together with a thriving Gaelic culture, this provides an inspiring island environment to live, study and work in, and a culturally rich place to explore as a visitor. The islands are privileged to be home to several award-winning contemporary Art Centres and Festivals, plus a creative trail of many smaller artist/maker run spaces. This publication aims to guide you to the galleries, shops and websites, where Art and Craft made in the Outer Hebrides can be enjoyed. En-route there are numerous sculptures, landmarks, historical and archaeological sites to visit. The guide documents some (but by no means all) of these contemplative places, which interact with the surrounding landscape, interpreting elements of island history and relationships with the natural environment. The Comhairle’s Heritage and Library Services are comprehensively detailed. Museum nan Eilean at Lews Castle in Stornoway, by special loan from the British Museum, is home to several of the Lewis Chessmen, one of the most significant archaeological finds in the UK. Throughout the islands a network of local historical societies, run by dedicated volunteers, hold a treasure trove of information, including photographs, oral histories, genealogies, croft histories and artefacts specific to their locality.

To date no response had been received. ITEM 3: Scottish Government Ferry Review Ranald Robertson directed all to annex A, Scope of Scottish Government Ferry Review, advising that there will be an opportunity for the group collectively or as individuals to input into the review.

Location: Hunter’s Quay, Dunoon (A) DETAILS OF THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT (i) Summary of development Requiring Permission: • Erection of new steel linkspan (with pedestrian walkway) adjacent to existing linkspan; • Erection of new steel berthing structure (with walkway) adjacent to existing pier; • Formation of 1:1.5 rock armour on north western slope extending into the sea; • Infilling works to create extended and reconfigured marshalling area to provide 75m of HGV/PSV marshalling and 234m of car marshalling; • Additional car parking space (8 spaces) in the western corner of the new marshalling area. (ii) Other Specified Operations • Erection of passenger shelter. • Erection of compressor housing. • Existing culvert extended to new outfall. ______________________________________________________________________________________ (B) RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that permission be granted, subject to the standard condition and reason, and to the conditions and reasons, and notes to the applicant set out overleaf. (C) DETERMINING ISSUES AND MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS Western Ferries propose to introduce a new linkspan at the existing terminal at Hunter’s Quay, which will take over the regular service from the existing linkspan. The existing linkspan in not proposed to be removed but will remain in situ to provide a fall back service including mechanical failure to allow vessels to continue to moor at the site giving shore access to the crew.
