  • P(Sophomore Or Junior) = ______**
Activity #4: Probability Rules, Discrete Random Variables, Conditional Probability, and Bayes’ Theorem 1. In a class of 25 students, 10 are sophomores and 15 are juniors. Furthermore, 11 of the students are engineering majors, while 3 sophomores are engineering majors. Let’s use simple probability rules to calculate basic probabilities. If we randomly choose one of these 25 students: P(sophomore) = _______________________ __________ ≤ P(math major) ≤ __________ * P(freshman) = _______________________ P(sophomore or junior) = _____________** P(not an engineering major) = P(engineering major)’ = _______________________________*** From this simple example, we can generalize basic facts about probabilities. For any event A in sample space S: • 0 ≤ P(A) ≤ 1 Every probability is a number between 0 and 1 •• P(S) = 1 The probability of the entire sample space is 1.0 (or the sum of all probabilities 1.0) ••• P(A)’ = 1 – P(A) Complement Rule (the complement of A is defined to be “event A does not occur”) Try these: P(engineering major or sophomore) = P(engineering ∪ sophomore) =_____________________ P(junior and not an engineering major) = P(junior ∩ engineering’) =_______________________ 2. Those probabilities were a bit more difficult to calculate with the way the information was given. We can simplify our calculations if we organize information in one of two ways: Venn Diagrams or contingency tables. Let’s start with a look at Venn Diagrams. In a Venn Diagram, the box represents the entire sample space. Circles represent variables (or categories of items). We shade areas to represent probabilities of interest. S S S A A B A B A’ P(A) P(A or B) P(A and B) Probability of A P(A ∪ B) P(A ∩ B) A union B A intersect B Either A or B occur Both A and B occur Create a Venn Diagram with the given information: In a class of 25 students, 10 are sophomores and 15 are juniors.

I had not worked with Dr. Hagemann before this process; she took a chance on me by becoming my advisor. I thought that I would be unable to pursue an honors thesis. By being my advisor, she made this experience possible. Her interest and dedication to my work exceeded my expectations. My thesis greatly benefited from her input. Thank you, Dr. Hagemann, for your generosity with your time and genuine interest in this thesis and its success. Thank you to Dr. Fitz Brundage for his helpful comments and willingness to be my second reader. I would also like to thank Dr. Michelle King for her valuable suggestions and support throughout this process. I am very grateful for Dr. Hagemann and Dr. King. Thank you both for keeping me motivated and believing in my work. Thank you to my roommates, Julia Wunder, Waverly Leonard, and Jamie Antinori, for being so supportive. BANK OF AMERICA CINEMA CLASSIC FILM SERIES JANUARY - JUNE 2010 FROM THE BOOTH The building is for sale, and who knows what the future will hold. What we can guarantee is at least another six months of great films. We’ve made sure this season will be one to remember, starting with G.W. Pabst’s silent masterpiece Pandora’s Box with live accompaniment by Jay Warren, and ending with Jane Russell’s, ah, assets in Howard Hughes’s notorious The Outlaw. In between, we’ve stocked up on films we’ve wanted to show for the past five years but couldn’t find through normal distributors—rare prints of such gems as Douglas Sirk’s weepie The First Legion, Anthony Mann’s scandalous God’s Little Acre, and John Cromwell’s elusive The Enchanted Cottage. Between March 13th and June 26th, blood pressures will rise and edges of seats will be perched on—we’re running the 1940 Republic serial The Mysterious Dr. Satan! And in April we have two radio films to celebrate the career of Chuck Schaden, who started this film series back in 1972. Thanks, Chuck. We literally wouldn’t be here without you. • Alice Guy Blaché
Alice Guy Blaché Also Known As: Alice Blache, Alice Guy, Alice Guy-Blaché Lived: July 1, 1873 - March 24, 1968 Worked as: assistant director, co-director, co-producer, co-screenwriter, director, film company owner, lecturer, producer, screenwriter, secretary, writer Worked In: France, United States by Alison McMahan From 1896 to 1906 Alice Guy was probably the only woman film director in the world. She had begun as a secretary for Léon Gaumont and made her first film in 1896. After that first film, she directed and produced or supervised almost six hundred silent films ranging in length from one minute to thirty minutes, the majority of which were of the single-reel length. In addition, she also directed and produced or supervised one hundred and fifty synchronized sound films for the Gaumont Chronophone. Her Gaumont silent films are notable for their energy and risk-taking; her preference for real locations gives the extant examples of these Gaumont films a contemporary feel. As Alan Williams has described her influence, Alice Guy “created and nurtured the mood of excitement and sheer aesthetic pleasure that one senses in so many pre-war Gaumont films, including the ones made after her departure from the Paris studio” (57). Most notable of her Gaumont period films is La Vie du Christ (1906), a thirty-minute extravaganza that featured twenty-five sets as well as numerous exterior locations and over three hundred extras. In early 1907, Guy resigned her position as head of Gaumont’s film production arm in Paris although she did not end her business relationship with Gaumont.

LACMA Evenings for Educators DEFINING DECORATIVE, EXAMINING DESIGN __________________________________________________________________ ESIGN IS ALL AROUND US. FROM SMALL-SCALE HOUSEHOLD OBJECTS TO massive architectural features, decorative and functional objects effect our daily lives and reflect our societal values. By studying Dthese objects, we learn about the forms, uses, and meanings of objects, designs, and environments in everyDay life. When we explore the decorative arts anD design, we consiDer a number of factors, including the artists’ choices about subject, style, material, and function. To begin an exploration of decorative arts anD design with students, pose the following questions: What do you see? Collect visual information. What is the central subject or focus of this work? What are the surrounding details? Artists think carefully about the appearance of their designs. Consider the artist’s choice of color, size, shape, surface pattern, and texture. The artworks featured in these materials represent a wiDe range of cultures and time periods. What was it used for? Who may have used it? What are the intended uses or functions of these objects? How can we tell? What do these items imply about the time anD place in which they were created, or about the people who may have used them? By carefully examining works of art, we can also understand the historical, cultural, and geographical influences of the periods in which they were made. How was it made? What material is the artwork made of? What factors may have influenced the artists’ choice of materials? What historical events took place arounD the time this artwork was made? What technology was available at that time? Was the object mass produceD or hanDcrafteD? • Moma More Cruel and Unusual Comedy Social Commentary in The
MoMA Presents: More Cruel and Unusual Comedy: Social Commentary in the American Slapstick Film Part 2 October 6-14, 2010 Silent-era slapstick highlighted social, cultural, and aesthetic themes that continue to be central concerns around the world today; issues of race, gender, propriety, and economics have traditionally been among the most vital sources for rude comedy. Drawing on the Museum’s holdings of silent comedy, acquired largely in the 1970s and 1980s by former curator Eileen Bowser, Cruel and Unusual Comedy presents an otherwise little-seen body of work to contemporary audiences from an engaging perspective. The series, which first appeared in May 2009, continues with films that take aim at issues of sexual identity, substance abuse, health care, homelessness and economic disparity, and Surrealism. On October 8 at 8PM, Ms Bowser will address the connection between silent comedy and the international film archive movement, when she introduces a program of shorts that take physical comedy to extremes of dream-like invention and destruction. Audiences today will find the vulgar zest and anarchic spirit of silent slapstick has much in common with contemporary entertainment such as Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, MTV's Jackass and the current Jackass 3-D feature. A majority of the films in the series are archival rarities, often the only known surviving version, and feature lesser- remembered performers on the order of Al St. John, Lloyd Hamilton, Fay Tincher, Hank Mann, Lupino Lane, and even one, Diana Serra Cary (a.k.a. Baby Peggy), who, at 91, is the oldest living silent film star still active.
