We don’t believe there is one technology that will suit all riding styles and understand the diversity of conditions around the world. As kiteboarding diversifies, Airush has focused on developing various core, rail and laminate technology to ensure the best strength to weight ratio in each product. New developments on high volume boards such as the Flytech Construction ensure we can offer reduced weight in the Converse and Square series. In lower volume products such as the Protoy where massive amounts of flex and damage tolerance are required, we have developed the definitive spinal core. In its second year, our unique Biotech vertical wood sandwich, has proven itself as a benchmark for durability and smooth responsiveness. Core Technology & Construction Technology Kiteboards are exposed to a complex matrix of forces that place significant load on the laminates and cores. Through ongoing development we have optimized the strength, durability and flex response to meet the demands of each rider group. Too much board flex is not always a good thing. Riders who are heavier or ride more overpowered would generally prefer a slightly stiffer board. Riders who are lighter or prefer to ride with slightly less power would normally prefer a slightly more flexible board. Flytech Construction The Flytech construction is most suitable for high volume kiteboards due to its low density and therefore lighter core weight. The lightweight core is combined with unidirectional and standard glass. This ensures the boards remain as light as possible and still survive the abuse. Our unique process allows us to customize the core density based on the volume of the board and allowing various outer skin constructions. The Flytech construction allows us to feature a “shaped” rail, which is more forgiving and ideal for entry level and surf oriented products. Biotech Construction The Airush Biotech construction is a spin of from snowboard technology where a vertical wood core sandwich is combined with a stepped construction and an ABS rail. Wood cores have long been renowned for their feel and smoothness, we combined this with a triaxial construction, his ensures a perfect blend of flex, response and durability. PPT top and bottom. Spinal Core (Now with CRT and Custom X) Only used on our Protoy, the new Spinal core features an exclusive linear foam core for unparalleled damage tolerance and sheer force strength. For 07 our unique “Custom X” laminate enable us to fine tune each board size for maximum pop and response. A combination of wood and glass reinforcing is used around the heel area. The Spinal core offers a strength to weight ratio that is the pinnacle of years of intensive research. Subject to change without notice Last Update : 11.08.2006 Technology X-link LT Construction (Now with Custom X) LT Our high performance construction illustrating perfect flex and a bombproof con- struction. Boards featuring our X-Link Lt construction use a combination of the X-Link PVC core with unidirectional and biaxial cloth, together with wood reinforcing in the high impact heel areas. A full top and bottom rail wrap allows for a soft “shaped” rail ensuring the board is more forgiving and stable to ride. A PPT layer on the bottom deck enhances the durability without limiting the flex characteristics. X-Link ABS Construction (Now with Custom X) ABS Our unique X-Link ABS Construction combines the perfect flex and strength characteristics of our X-Link PVC core, with a virtually indestructible ABS rail. The ABS section is inset into the laminate and forms a “grindable” rail that can withstand a significant amount more abuse than a wrapped rail construction. This construction uses a combination of unidirectional and biaxial cloth together with asymmetrical wood reinforcing in the high impact heel area. A PPT layer on the bottom deck enhances the durability without limiting the flex characteristics. ••• •• ••• Custom – X Custom X lamination allows us to fine tune every model and size of board by making adjustments to the angle and orientation of the glass within the laminate. This improves the consistency of flex between each size and model as it allows us to optimize it based on differences, in length, width, thickness and rider requirements of each board. CRT Featured only in our Protoy range, CRT (Carbon Response Tips) have allowed us to reduce the thickness in the tip of the board for increased flex, and at the same time increase the pop and response of the tips, through the use of high modulus carbon fiber in the top and bottom laminates. • An Introduction and Brief History
KITES An Introduction and Brief History SKY WIND WORLD.ORG FLYING A ROKAKKU - FLYING BUFFALO PROJECT HISTORY From China kites spread to neighboring countries and across the seas to the Pacific region. At the same time they spread across Burma, India and arriving in North Africa about 1500 years ago. They did not arrive in Europe or America until much later probably via the trade routes Kites are thought to have originated in China about 3000 years ago. One story is that a fisherman was out on a windy day and his hat blew away and got caught on his fishing line which was then when these areas developed. blown up in to the air. Bamboo was a ready source of straight sticks for spars and silk fabric was available to make a light covering, then in the 2nd century AD paper was invented and is still used to this day. PHYSICS Kites fly when thrust, lift, drag and gravity are balanced. The flying line and bridle hold the kite at an angle to the wind so that the air flows faster across the top than the bottom producing the lift. THE PARTS OF A KITE 1 THE SAIL • This can be made of any material such as paper, fabric or plastic. • It is used to trap the air. The air must have somewhere to escape otherwise it spills over the front edge and makes the kite wobble. This can be done by using porous fabric or making it bend backwards to allow the air to slip smoothly over the side.

Notes on K I T E A E R I A L P H O T O G R A P H Y I N T R O D U C T I O N This guide is prepared as an introduction to the acquisition of photography using a kite to raise the camera. It is in 3 parts: Application Equipment Procedure It is prepared with the help and guidance from the world wide KAP community who have been generous with their expertise and support. Blending a love of landscape and joy in the flight of a kite, KAP reveals rich detail and captures the human scale missed by other (higher) aerial platforms. It requires patience, ingenuity and determination in equal measure but above all a desire to capture the unique viewpoint achieved by the intersection of wind, light and time. Every flight has the potential to surprise us with views of a familiar world seen anew. Mostly this is something that is done for the love of kite flying: camera positioning is difficult and flight conditions are unpredictable. If predictable aerial imagery is required and kite flying is not your thing then other UAV methods are recommended: if you are not happy flying a kite this is not for you. If you have not flown a kite then give it a go without a camera and see how you feel about it: kite flying at its best is a curious mix of exhilaration, spiritual empathy with the environment and relaxation of mind and body brought about by concentration of the mind on a single object in the landscape.

  • Kitesurfing a - Z
Kitesurfing A - Z A Airfoil (aerofoil): a wing, kite, or sail used to generate lift or propulsion. Airtime: the amount of time spent in the air while jumping. AOA, Angle of Attack: also known as the angle of incidence (AOI) is the angle with which the kite flies in relation to the wind. Increasing AOA generally gives more lift. AOI, Angle of Incidence: angle which the kite takes compared to the wind direction Apparent wind, AW: The wind felt by the kite or rider as they pass through the air. For instance, if the true wind is blowing North at 10 knots and the kite is moving West at 10 knots, the apparent wind on the kite is NW at about 14 knots. The apparent wind direction shifts towards the direction of travel as speed increases. Aspect Ratio, AR: the ratio of a kites width to height (span to chord). Kites can range between a high aspect ratio of about 5.0 or a low aspect ratio of about 3.0. AR5: The legendary first 4 line inflatable kite manufactured by Naish. ARC: a foil kite manufactured by Peter Lynn B Back Loop: a kitesurfing trick where the kiter rotates backward (begins by turning their back toward the kite) while throwing his/her feet above the level of his/her head. Back Roll: same as a back loop but without getting their feet up high. Batten: a length of carbon or plastic which adds stiffness or shape to the kite or sail. Bear Away / Bear Off: change your direction of travel to a more downwind direction.

L. SCOFIELD MARINE FISHERIES BRANCH 1956 1 FIGURE 1. Outline map of California, showing the location of the more important fishing ports 2 3 4 FOREWORD Trolling may be conducted from a small boat thereby requiring a low original investment and the gear used is relat- ively inexpensive compared with netting operations. As a result, this manner of fishing has attracted hundreds of commercial fishermen along the 1,000 miles of California coast. In recent years, commercial men are being out- numbered by the host of sport fishermen, many of whom do trolling at some time during the year. Sport fishermen pioneered ocean trolling in California and have initiated several of the improvements that have been adopted during the 75 years since ocean trolling started in this State. An account, from time to time, of the gear and methods of operating is desirable for each of our important fisher- ies. Not only may changes be noted, but gear and methods of fishing have a direct bearing when appraising the re- cords of catch per unit of fishing effort in attempts to determine changes in the supply of fish in the ocean. The following descriptions of gear (when not dated) apply to 1955.

CRANFIELD INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY STEPHEN E. HOBBS A QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF KITE PERFORMANCE IN NATURAL WIND WITH APPLICATION TO KITE ANEMOMETRY Ecological Physics Research Group PhD THESIS CRANFIELD INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ECOLOGICAL PHYSICS RESEARCH GROUP PhD THESIS Academic Year 1985-86 STEPHEN E. HOBBS A Quantitative Study of Kite Performance in Natural Wind with application to Kite Anemometry Supervisor: Professor G.W. Schaefer April 1986 (Digital version: August 2005) This thesis is submitted in ful¯llment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy °c Cran¯eld University 2005. All rights reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced without the written permission of the copyright owner. i Abstract Although kites have been around for hundreds of years and put to many uses, there has so far been no systematic study of their performance. This research attempts to ¯ll this need, and considers particularly the performance of kite anemometers. An instrumented kite tether was designed and built to study kite performance. It measures line tension, inclination and azimuth at the ground, :sampling each variable at 5 or 10 Hz. The results are transmitted as a digital code and stored by microcomputer. Accurate anemometers are used simultaneously to measure the wind local to the kite, and the results are stored parallel with the tether data. As a necessary background to the experiments and analysis, existing kite information is collated, and simple models of the kite system are presented, along with a more detailed study of the kiteline and its influence on the kite system. A representative selection of single line kites has been flown from the tether in a variety of wind conditions.

Project # DJO-0209 Development of a Wind Monitoring System and Grain Grinder for WPI’s Kite Power System An Interactive Qualifying Project Report submitted to the Faculty of the WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science by __________________________ Deepa Krishnaswamy ___________________________ Joseph Phaneuf __________________________ Travis Perullo May 7 th , 2009 _________________________ Professor David Olinger, Advisor Abstract The goal of this project was two-fold: 1) to develop a wind monitoring system to be used during field testing of the WPI kite power system, and 2) to develop a grain grinder accessory for the same system for use in a developing nation such as Namibia. Kite power is emerging as an economically sound alternative energy source as the kites used can operate at higher altitudes than wind turbines. At higher altitudes, wind speed is higher, and hence, a greater amount of power is available. The WPI kite power system operates via a large wind boarding kite, which pulls the end of a long rocking arm. This in turn spins a generator which produces electricity. The developed wind monitoring system consists of a carbon fiber pyramid shaped frame mounted to the underside of a weather balloon with a wind measuring anemometer hung from the frame. Steps taken in the design process include deciding on a deployment system (i.e. how to place the anemometer at the desired altitude), conceptualizing and building a stable frame to mount the anemometer to, constructing a rotating platform and hinge assembly to keep the anemometer vertical and facing normal to the wind, developing MATLAB code to accept the signal transmitted from the anemometer wirelessly, and building the wireless transmitter for the anemometer.
