    Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed.

E-mail: [email protected] 3Corresponding author Abstract The taxonomy and host ranges of the cavus species complex within Dibrachys Förster (Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae) are revised. Examination of about 810 specimens, including multivariate morphometric analysis of 21 quantitative characters clearly separated three species, Dibrachys microgastri (Bouché, 1834), Dibrachys lignicola Graham, 1969, and Dibrachys verovesparum Peters & Baur sp. n., but allowed no further subdivision of taxa according to origin, host association or previous taxonomic concepts. A neotype is designated for D. microgastri and under this name are placed in synonymy the names Dibrachys cavus (Walker, 1835) syn. n. (including eight current junior synonyms), Dibrachys clisiocampae (Fitch, 1856) syn. n. (including five current junior synonyms), Dibrachys boarmiae (Walker, 1863) syn. n., and Dibrachys ele- gans (Szelényi, 1981) syn. n. Dibrachys goettingenus Doganlar, 1987 syn. n. is synonymized under D. lignicola. The mor- phological analyses revealed several new qualitative and quantitative characters for separating taxa in this species complex and an identification key and diagnoses are provided for females and males. Dibrachys microgastri is a polypha- gous generalist pupal ectoparasitoid of several different orders of holometabolous insects, whereas D. lignicola is a polyphagous ectoparasitoid of hosts in Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, and D.

Adults of beet webworm Loxostege sticticalis were collected in Western Siberia in 2009 and 2010. A microsporidium was found infecting 12 of 50 moths in 2010. The parasite develops in direct contact with host cell cytoplasm, sporogony is presumably disporoblastic. The spores are ovoid, diplokaryotic, 4.2 × 2.4 µm in size (fresh), without a sporophorous vesicle. Electron microscopy showed: (a) tubules on the surface of sporoblasts and immature spores; (b) slightly anisofilar polar tube with 10–14 coils, last 2–3 coils of lesser electron density; (c) bipartite polaroplast with anterior and posterior parts composed of thin and thick lamellae, respectively; (d) an indentation in the region of the anchoring disc; (e) an additional layer of electron-dense amorphous matter on the exospore surface. The spore ultrastructure is char- acteristic of the genus Tubulinosema. Sequencing of small subunit and large subunit ribosomal RNA genes showed 98–99.6% similarity of this parasite to the Tubulinosema species available on Genbank. A new species Tubulinosema loxostegi sp. n. is established. Key words: Beet webworm, microsporidia, taxonomy, molecular phylogenetics, Tubulinosema.

Resumo Os fungos entomopatogénicos têm-se revelado uma alternativa promissora aos produtos químicos usados na luta contra pragas. Apesar do grande esforço empreendido na sua utilização, o seu efeito num grande número de pragas é ainda desconhecida. O bichado da castanha, Cydia splendana L., é a principal praga do castanheiro no norte de Portugal, causando prejuízos consideráveis. A utilização de meios de luta químicos apresenta limitações devido, por um lado, ao número reduzido de substâncias homologadas, e por outro porque a utilização de pesticidas de síntese não se coaduna com o modo de produção sustentável em que os soutos são conduzidos na região. Adicionalmente os meios de luta culturais e biotécnicos têm-se revelado de difícil implementação e de eficácia reduzida. Com o presente trabalho pretendeu-se avaliar a susceptibilidade de C. splendana ao fungo entomopatogénico Beauveria bassiana. Testou-se o efeito de quatro isolados (A39GF09; A67GF09; LC39GF10 e PA95GF10) da colecção do IPB, obtidos de larvas do lepidóptero Prays oleae recolhidos na região de Trás-os- Montes. Para tal em laboratório, foram inoculadas larvas de C. splendana, pelo método de superfície, com seis concentrações de conídios (1 x 105; 1 x 106; 5 x 106; 1 x 107; 5 x 107; 1 x 108).

Calumpang National Crop Protection Center, Crop Protection Cluster, College of Agriculture, University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines 4031 Corresponding author: [email protected] (Received: August 15, 2013; Accepted: November 8, 2013 ) ABSTRACT The occurrence of the bombycid moth, Trilocha varians (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) was observed and monitored among Ficus benjamina and F. nitida in the landscape of the National Crop Protection Center from August to December 2012. Eggs, larvae and pupae of the pest were all present on the infested shrubs. The larvae completely defoliated and eventually killed some of the Ficus plants . At the peak of infestation, larvae can consume all of the leaves of an individual shrub in just overnight. T. varians was also observed infesting jackfruit in Los Baños, Laguna and Balete, Batangas as well as on F. nitida in Baguio City . The nature of damage, host response and host range were discussed. This is the first record of T. varians as pest of Artocarpus heterpphyllus, A. communis , A. kamansi and some ornamental species of Ficu s in the Philippines. Key words: damage, host range, invasive pest INTRODUCTION The Philippines for the last several years was affected by outbreaks and isolated serious infestations of invasive pest species - Stenocranus pacificus Kirkaldy on corn, Nipaecocus nipae (Maskell), Brontispa longissima Gestro, and Aspidiotus sp., a species of scale insect, all on coconut, as well as native species like Spodoptera exempta (Walker) on graminaceous crops and weeds.

The remaining taxa are synonymic names. The descriptions are mainly based on external and genitalic characters of the imago, partly on larval struc- tures. An account is given on the morphology, phylogeny and zoogeography of the group including the description of some very specialized structures in the male genitalia which probably are functioning as odorific organs. 1. Einleitung Während unserer Nepal-Expeditionen der Jahre 1962, 1964, 1967 und 1973 konnte eine kleine Anzahl von Exemplaren aus der Ocinara-Gruppe gesammelt werden. Die Bestimmung dieses Materials, basierend auf der üblichen Untersuchung der äußeren und inneren Merkmale, erbrachte ein überraschend unklares Ergebnis, das nach einer Revision der Gruppe rief. Es zeigte sich nämlich, daß nicht nur die Arten ungenügend definiert waren, sondern auch die Gattungszugehörigkeit in den meisten Fällen falsch war. So wurden nun die Typen der beschriebenen Taxa unter- sucht und die Ergebnisse führten zu einer völlig neuen Gruppierung mit Beschrei- bung neuer Gattungen und Arten.
