College of Fine Arts

Project Title: The Black Female Composer Applicant Name/Position: Dr. James D. Rodriguez, Assistant Professor Department/School: School of Music

1. Project Abstract

This project seeks funding from the DEI Committee to present a recital of works by prominent Black female composers. Participants will include Dr. Gwendolyn Alfred

(soprano) from Texas Southern University, Dr. Artina McCain (piano) from the

University of Memphis, Christine Lamprea (cello), Dr. James Rodriguez (baritone), and narration by Dr. William Gibbons. Featured composers include Florence Price,

Margaret Bonds, Dorothy Rudd Moore, Betty Jackson King, Jaqueline Hairston, Tania

Leon, and Undine Smith Moore.

2. Project Description

During the November 26, 2018, DEI meeting, Ms. Kristen Queen (Interim Director of the

School of Music) presented information on a study that she and Dr. Blessinger had conducted regarding the programming diversity at the TCU School of Music. One of the most underrepresented areas was that of female composers of color.

Dr. McCain has been a longtime advocate for the programming of works by black composers, having created the Black Composers Concert Series through the Austin

Chamber Music Center (Austin, TX). In 2017 and 2018, she invited me to perform on these concerts, and we earned an Austin Critics Table Award (June 2018) for our presentation of “Black Composer Concert: The Black Female Composer.” In November 2018, we were selected to present at the TEXOMA NATS (National Association of

Teachers of Singing) Regional Conference at Baylor University. We were joined by our colleague, Dr. Alfred, and introduced participants to a number of songs by prominent female composers. Future presentations will be given at Texas Southern University, the

University of Tennessee, and Montclair State University during the 2019-2020 academic year.

The program that we have selected includes a diverse group of pieces that would be of interest and accessible to any of our students, from beginner to advanced. As part of the presentation, we will share a bit of history on each composer and her music.

3. Audience Served

The recital is tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 5, 7 PM in PepsiCo Recital Hall.

The target audience is the TCU School of Music students; attendance to the event would count towards recital attendance credit, which is required of all undergraduate students.

4. University or Community Partners

Although this event is geared toward music students, we will extend an invitation to the general public, as well as to students in the Women and Gender and African American and Africana Studies.

5. Budget and Budget Narrative

I am requesting a $1000 honorarium ($500 each) for Dr. McCain and Dr. Alfred.
