NATIONAL ACADEMIES OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF THE UNITED ST ATES 1990 RADIO SCIENCE MEETING PROGRAM AND ABSTRACTS SPONSORED BY THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR URSI DALLAS, TX MAY 6-11, 1990 WELCOME TO DALLAS On behalf of the symposium steering committee, I extend a wann welcome to big 'D'. This year, the AP-S and URSI organizations join with the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) for the AP-SNRSI/MTT-S Joint International · Symposium. More than one-third of the AP-S and URSI members are also members of the MTT society and likewise more than one-third of the AP-S chapters worldwide are joint MTT-S/AP-S chapters. The societies share a common heritage and continue to benefit from the advances occurring in shared technologies. It is therefore natural for the societies to have a "get together" once a decade (last one held at Los Angeles in 1981) to assess the state of common technologies. A record of 850 papers, evenly split between APS and URSI, were submitted for review by the Technical Program Committee. As in the past, papers will be presented on a wide range of topics with the strongest concentration in EM theory, numerical methods, scattering and diffraction, microstrip antennas, reflectors, antenna theory, and phased arrays. Special Sessions honor the contributions of Professors Leopold Felsen of the Polytcclmic University and Y.T. Lo of the University of Illinois. In addition there arc focused Special Sessions on polarimetrics, superconductivity, digital beamfonning, scattering from antennas, innovations in EM education, fiber optic applications to phased arrays, millimeter wave components and phased arrays, time domain analysis of planar circuits, the role of analysis in the age of computers, and reducing the operation count in EM modeling. A highlight of the technical program will be the plenary session held jointly with the MTT Society. Our plenary speakers; Dr. Harold Sobol of the University of Texas at Arlington, Dr. Robert Mailloux of Rome Air Development Center and Mr. Richard Mathison of Jet Propulsion Laboratory will give their views on how different technologies will be merging in the coming decade to influence systems of the next generation. Eight short courses and workshops will be held on Friday. They include, Application of Lightwave Technology to Microwave Antennas, Computer Application in EM Education, EM Modeling Software Validation: Benchmark Solutions, Broadband Low-Profile Antennas, Analysis and Design of Microstrip Antennas, Finite Element Methods, State of the Reflector Antenna Art in the l 990's, and Fundamentals of Microwave Radomes. The social program is packed with both daytime and evening evenL~. The kick-off event will be the AP-SNRSI reception at the Dallas Convention Center on Sunday evening. On Monday there will be a Horizon House reception at Longhorn Ballroom. The awards banquet will be on Tuesday night. Finally on ·Wednesday, you will have an opportunity to spend an evening at a Texas Ranch. Through artistic interventions during special events, carnival competitions, workshops and outreach programs, the project aims to reinforce social ideals such as healthy life choices and respect for cultural heritage. Jumbie Camp follows the same concepts as above with the Brooklyn Jumbies and takes place in two burrows of New York with very different demographics. Jumbie Camp set up in Galeria Ramis Barquet in Chelsea, where the gallery was transformed into a workshop and rehearsal space where costumes and masks were created to provide costumes free of charge for the Brooklyn Jumbies’ presentations.

An appealing choice for finite element discretizations are edge elements, the lowest order variant of a H(curl)-conforming family of finite elements. However, the large nullspace of the curl-operator gives rise to serious dif- ficulties. It comprises a considerable part of all spectral modes on the finite element grid, tending to pollute the solution with non-physical contributions and crippling standard multilevel solvers. We tackle these problems by an adaptive multilevel algorithm. After every standard V-cycle with respect to the canonical basis of edge elements, the non- physical contributions are removed by a projection step. It requires the solution of Poisson’s equation, augmented by certain boundary terms, in the nullspace, which can be carried out efficiently by an inner multilevel iteration. The whole scheme yields convergence rates independent of the refinement level of the mesh. Furthermore, a simple criterion for meshes is derived which can resolve all field modes corresponding to negative eigenvalues. This requirement is essential to guarantee both stability and efficiency of an iterative multilevel solver for indefinite systems.
