The city’s geographical instability, marked by earthquakes that took place in 1687 and 1746, also affected social and economic structures of a viceregal society in flux. By focusing on three distinct forms of the theme of instability (seismic, caste hierarchy, and economic), I was able to bring together a literary corpus that spanned from 1687 to 1797 and included both works of poetry and prose, canonical and less-studied texts. This includes poetry by Juan del Valle y Caviedes (1649-1698), Pedro de Peralta Barnuevo (1663-1743), Friar Francisco del Castillo (1716-1770), and Esteban de Terralla y Landa (1750?-1805?); travel chronicles co-authored by Antonio de Ulloa (1716-1795) and Jorge Juan (1713-1773); the prose work El lazarillo de ciegos caminantes (1775), by Alonso Carrió de la Vandera (1716-1783); as well as epistolary correspondence penned by Spanish and Creole noblemen. While some of these works individually have received a fair amount of critical attention, the dissertation brings them together in a unique way that allows us to view how they portray the paradigm of instability (volatility, change, mobility) and compare them within their specific historical and literary context. In the three main chapters of the dissertation, I examine different forms of instability by focusing on how the period’s literature discussed earthquakes (Chapter 1), caste hierarchy iii (Chapter 2), and commerce (Chapter 3). These texts shed light on specific historical events, and also illustrate how repeated fluctuations in different areas of limeño society contributed to a general atmosphere of instability evident to authors throughout the eighteenth century. By examining several types of instability over the course of more than a century, I conclude that focusing on this theme provides a framework for analysis that brings to bear a wide range of topics relevant to eighteenth-century Spanish America: scientific inquiry and religious discourse at the dawn of the Enlightenment, discrimination against and forms of societal participation of men and women of African ancestry, urban development, social stagnation and mobility, as well as commercial activity and the exploitation of natural resources. iv To Chelsea and to the memory of Margaret and John Krieg. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The number of people who have supported me throughout my years as a doctoral student is too large to be told here, but I will give it my best shot.     SOCIAL THOUGHT & COMMENTARY Torophies and Torphobes: The Politics of Bulls and Bullfights in Contemporary Spain Stanley Brandes University of California, Berkeley Abstract Although the bullfight as a public spectacle extends throughout southwestern Europe and much of Latin America, it attains greatest political, cultural, and symbolic salience in Spain. Yet within Spain today, the bullfight has come under serious attack, from at least three sources: (1) Catalan nationalists, (2) Spaniards who identify with the new Europe, and (3) increasingly vocal animal rights advocates. This article explores the current debate—cultural, political, and ethical—on bulls and bullfighting within the Spanish state, and explores the sources of recent controversy on this issue. It is in Spain alone, however, that this custom has attained notable polit- ical, cultural, and symbolic salience. For many Spaniards, the bull is a quasi-sacred creature (Pérez Álvarez 2004), the bullfight a display of exceptional artistry. Tourists consider bullfights virtually synonymous with Spain and flock to these events as a source of exotic entertainment. My impression, in fact, is that bullfighting is even more closely associated with Spanish national identity than baseball is to that of the United States. Garry Marvin puts the matter well when he writes that the cultur- al significance of the bullfight is “suggested by its general popular image as something quintessentially Spanish, by the considerable attention paid to it within Spain, and because of its status as an elaborate and spectacu- lar ritual drama which is staged as an essential part of many important celebrations” (Marvin 1988:xv).

    Picasso and Dalí, double portrait in the bullring of art By PILAR PARCERISAS Dalí’s relationship with Picasso is ambivalent and complex. On one hand, it is rooted in the admiration of Dalí towards the master, which starts after his visit to Picasso’s Parisi- an atelier in 1926. From that moment onwards, and up until 1970, when their relation- ship has completely dissolved, Dalí writes him letters and postcards, to which he never replies. However, Picasso did help Dalí pay for the costs of his trip to New York in 1934, for which Dalí always showed his gratitude publicly. But after the Spanish Civil War and the tragic ending of the Second World War with the nuclear bomb in 1945, Dalí wants to take a new artistic course. He starts measuring himself against Picasso: he sets out on an ideological confrontation, as well as an aes- thetical rivalry with him, which is aimed at finally becoming the master’s successor in the History of Art. In his lectures of the time, Dalí delivers diatribes against him, while he asks for a return to Raphael’s classicism in the nuclear age. This opens a new period in Dalí’s work, a sort of ‘nuclear mysticism’, where the atomic age and Spanish Catholi- cism merge into the significant work Mystical Manifesto (1951). The political context has changed. The Cold War determines the relations between Eu- rope, United States and the Soviet Union. The aesthetic of abstraction rules in the US while, in Europe, it’s all about informalism; so, on both sides of the Atlantic, the aesthet- ics are hegemonic.

    ISSN 1745-638X (Online) THE COMPETITION LAW REVIEW Volume 11 Issue 1 pp 61-81 July 2015 Entertainment made in Spain: competition in the bullfighting industry Francisco Marcos* Controversial for many reasons, bullfighting is probably one of the most typical entertainment activities in Spain. Bullfights are an idiosyncratic spectacle belonging to the Spanish cultural tradition, but which has also a meaningful economic significance. This article will look at the role of market forces and competition in the bullfighting business, describing the peculiarities of its organization and looking at the many anti-competitive features that characterize it. Spanish local authorities are strongly involved in the organization of bullfights and strict and detailed public rules govern the intervening actors and the performance during the shows. Thus, the institutional framework of bullfighting heavily constrains competition conditions in the industry, setting the scenario for a limited role of market forces. Furthermore, history shows that the collective organization of different players involved (promoters, breeders, bullfighters and subordinates) in order to exert their market power has occasionally led to anti-competitive actions and reactions. Thus, unsurprisingly, the Spanish Competition authorities have dealt with some anti-competitive behaviour by some of the players participating in the bullfighting industry. A bullfight is an event in which a bullfighter on foot or on horseback challenges a numbers of bulls (one each time) in a enclosed area built for this purpose; it’s Corrida de Toros. La Corrida is performed by a TORERO (bullfighter) called bullring or arena who is on foot. All the bullfighters are TOREROS but not all the toreros are “Matador de Toros” or “Diestro”. Matador is a category acquired in a ceremony Bullfighting may be divided into three different kinds, depending on the Torero’s experience, the size of the bull and the use of horses : called “Alternativa”. From this moment onwards he can fight with the red cape and the sword. Each Matador has his own team called cuadrilla which includes 6 members: 2 lancers, 3 flagmen and 1 sword servant. Not all the bulls can fight in this kind of corrida, they must weigh at least 460 kg and be 4 years old (the bull fight regulation allows bulls between 4 and 6 years old).
