May I congratulate you and your men for the swift action taken in the murder oi the civil rights worker from Detroit.

4'; However, I am alarmed at certain aspects oi the case. These men deserve a fair trial just as any other American citizen does. Tm American judicial system remains vibrant only as long as it appl equally to ell. One is truly innocent until proven quilty. But,] I think that possibly the rights of these men to a fair trial has! "x been violated. 1 It wou 1d have been appropriate for the President to have announc< the arrest oi these men but it did not stop at that. Following tl announcement of their arrest he noted they were members of the K1; He then stated that the woman had been murdered by the enemies o1 freedom. He went on to denounce the KKK. By associating these n with the Klan and then going on to strongly denounce the Klan the P President has in effect given rise to guilt by association. This is e concept which should be outside of the law. Has not the Pres whose pronouncements carry such tremendous weight, somewhat prejuc thd bmerican public against these men? Can they receive a fair t1 I doubt lerioualy that they-can for the next few weeks if at any_ I I abhor violence and this murder is an act of ruthless and unmit; crime.
