Shaw and G. Walbridge A feature of the year was the invasion of Arctic Redpolls Carduelis homemanni and the associated mass of submitted material. Before circulations began, we feared the worst: a huge volume of contradictory reports with differing dates, places and numbers and probably a wide range of criteria used to identify the species. In the event, such fears were mostly unfounded. Several submissions were models of clarity and co-operation; we should like to thank those who got together to sort out often-confusing local situations and presented us with excellent files. Despite the numbers, we did not resort to nodding reports through: assessment remained strict, but the standard of description and observation was generally high (indeed, we were able to enjoy some of the best submissions ever). Even some rejections were 'near misses', usually through no fault of the observers. Occasionally, one or two suffered from inadequate documentation ('Looked just like bird A' not being quite good enough on its own). Having said that, we feel strongly that the figures presented in this report are minimal and a good many less-obvious individuals were probably passed over as 'Mealies' C. flammea flammea, often when people understandably felt more inclined to study the most distinctive Arctics. January 2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY South West Scotland Transport Study: Initial Appraisal Case for Change Executive Summary Background In the 2017/18 Programme for Government, the Scottish Government committed to commence work for the second Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2) in the Dumfries and Galloway area. Responding to this commitment, AECOM and Stantec were commissioned to carry out the first stage in the Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance (STAG) process, researching the case for investment in potential transport interventions in the South West of Scotland through an Initial Appraisal: Case for Change study. The key aim of the work is to consider the rationale for improvements to road, rail, public transport and active travel on key strategic corridors in the South West of Scotland, including those served by the A75 and A77, with a focus on access to the ports at Cairnryan. The study area includes Dumfries & Galloway and the southern extents of South Ayrshire and East Ayrshire and has focused on the following strategic corridors: • Gretna – Stranraer • South of Ayr – Stranraer • Dumfries – Cumnock Figure 1: South West Scotland Transport Study - Study Area • Dumfries – Lockerbie and Moffat Approach The Initial Appraisal: Case for Change constitutes the first stage of STAG and involves the following core tasks: • Analysis of Problems and Opportunities: Establish the evidence base for problems and issues linked to transport on key corridors across the South West of Scotland drawing on targeted data analysis and engagement with the public and key stakeholders; • Objective Setting: Develop initial Transport Planning Objectives to encapsulate the aims of any interventions and to guide the development of solutions; and • Option Generation, Sifting and Development: Develop a long list of multi-modal options to address the identified problems and opportunities, and undertake a process of option sifting and development leading to the identification of a short list of interventions recommended for progression towards Preliminary Appraisal. -

Clouston File 01: The entire book This document is provided for you by The Whiting Society of Ringers visit www.whitingsociety.org.uk for the full range of publications and articles about bells and change ringing The church and other bells of Wigtownshire by F C Eeles and R W M Clouston INTRODUCTION As in the case of the similar survey of the bells in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright the late Dr F C Eeles' note-books have formed the basis of this account of the bells in Wigtownshire (Eeles and Clouston 1967). His visits had all been made before 1915 and a number of parishes had not been reached. Mr Clouston examined all the bells in the summers of 1963 and 1964 and revised Dr Eeles' notes where appropriate. This article is intended to be a companion to those surveys already published on bells in other Scottish counties which have appeared from time to time in the Proceedings. Wherever possible repetition of information is avoided. DISCUSSION The oldest existing bell in the county discovered in the survey is the disused one dated 1534 in the church at Kirkmaiden. The inscription records that Nicholas Ramsey, Lord of Dalhousie, caused the bell to be cast, and the inference is that John Morison was the founder though no other bells by him have been found. Unusually there are no moulding wires by the lip and at the top of the soundbow, though in other respects the founder followed traditional practice. -
