Happy Bottom Eighth in the East
Ridgewell Airfield Commemorative Association Happy Bottom 70 years ago this month a famous American actor came to Ridgewell. Fresh from filming ‘Mr. Winkle Goes to War’, Hollywood star, Edward G. Robinson, arrived to christen a new B-17 in honour of his wife. On 5 July 1944, Ridgewell came to a standstill. Not just for the war, but for movie actor Edward G. Robinson (alias "Rico" Bandello, a small-time crook from the movie, Little Caesar) who’d arrived to christen a new B- 17G which had recently been assigned to the 532nd Bomb Squadron. Base Chaplain James Good Brown was one of the first to greet him. He was left suitably impressed. “What a man!” Brown later wrote. “Of all the actors who came to the base, he showed the most human interest. He was never acting. He just wanted to walk around the base talking to the President—Dave Osborne men, and the men wanted to talk to him.” Chairman—Jim Tennet Robinson broke his gangster persona making the watching Treasurer—Jenny Tennet Secretary—Mike Land men howl with laughter when he announced that he was Membership Secretary—Alan Steel naming the new aircraft ‘Happy Bottom’ after his wife, Historian—Chris Tennet Gladys, which he cleverly mispronounced, ‘Glad Ass’. Volunteer—Monica Steel The actor was a big hit. “When he left the base, he left with Aki Bingley several thousand men as his friends,” said Chaplain Brown. When referring specifically to a country’s aerial military organization, I capitalize the name Air Force. Otherwise, when simply discussing the concept in the abstract, I write it as the lower case air force. In accordance with military standards, I also capitalize the entire name of all code names for operations (OPERATION MATTERHORN or MATTERHORN). Air Force’s names are written out (Twentieth Air Force), the bomber commands are written in Roman numerals (XX Bomber Command, or simply XX), while combat groups are given Arabic numerals (305th Bomber Group). As the story shifts to the Mariana Islands, Twentieth Air Force and XXI Bomber Command are used interchangeably. Throughout, the acronyms USAAF and AAF are used to refer to the United States Army Air Force, while the abbreviation of Air Force as “AF” is used only in relation to a numbered Air Force (e.g. Eighth AF). New Hamburg-Nuremberg Block-Train Service Started by Vienna-based Roland Spedition Starting last week, Vienna-based Roland Spedition forwarders is running its own container-block-train service linking three Hamburg Container Terminals: CTA, CTB and EKOM/EUROGATE with the TRICON Terminal in Nuremberg. Initially, there are three weekly departures on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from Hamburg. The containers are available for collection at the TRICON Terminal in Nuremberg on Tuesdays from 10.00 am, Thursdays from 6.00 am and Fridays from 11.00 am. Nikolaus Hirnschall M.A. of Roland Spedition Vienna points out that block-trains for on-carriage from Nuremberg to Austria also transport empty containers to Linz, Enns, Vienna and Graz. “The round-trip service, Hamburg-Nuremberg-Austria-Hamburg, offers additional fast and environment-friendly transport capacity by rail on the Hamburg-Nuremberg leg, for import containers coming out of the Port of Hamburg en route to the economically- strong Nuremberg region. There is real interest in the new train showing its acceptance in the market place. With the service from Nuremberg to Austria, we additionally offer our customers cost-effective empty container positioning. Interested shippers can obtain a thorough briefing on the new train products and offerings from the Roland Spedition sales team,” explains Hirnschall. Bavaria is the most important partner for container hinterland transport for the Port of Hamburg. Its strongly export-oriented commerce exploits Hamburg’s dense network of liner services for global goods distribution. Almost every port in the world is reachable via Hamburg. Some 750,000 standard containers (TEU) were transported to/from Bavaria via Hamburg in 2015. -

UNCLASSIFIED/UNLIMITED Quantifying the Effects of Chaff Screening on Hardkill and Softkill Coordination Nekmohamed Manji, Murat Kocakanat, and Agis Kitsikis Defence R&D Canada – Ottawa Department of National Defence 3701 Carling Ave Ottawa, ON, K1A 0Z4 CANADA Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT For the Navy, Anti-ship Missile Defence (ASMD) is a priority due to the obvious mismatch between a missile threat’s speed and maneuverability compared to a warship. Chaff is an off-board, passive technique that can be combined with a ship maneuver to create an effective tactic for ASMD. The effectiveness of chaff tactics is fundamentally dependent on the chaff radar cross section (RCS) as well as environmental factors including multi-path, sea state and wind conditions; engagement geometry such as threat bearing and ship maneuvers; target and threat properties like ship RCS and sophistication of electronic counter countermeasure (ECCM) features of the threat missile. In the future, hardkill and softkill coordination of maritime platforms is viewed as a force multiplier that will also improve the survivability of the task group. Therefore, the deployment of chaff must be made with consideration to many variables and the resulting optimization problem of developing robust tactics is complex. In this work, we present an application of a chaff modelling tool that can be used to aid in the design and analysis of optimal chaff countermeasures for ASMD. In particular, the effects of chaff screening and interference on the detection and engagement of missile threats for different task group geometries (scenarios) is studied. Our chaff design tool can be used to study the frequency and angular dependence of chaff RCS as a function of time and range for spherical and ellipsoidal chaff clouds. -
