STAYING STRONG DURING A PANDEMIC! O F F Here at the shelter, just like everywhere else, Covid-19 I changed everything in Mid-March. C E Nothing changed, however, for the animals who still needed

Our volunteers have been amazing, many being flexible with schedules, keeping everyone safe and trying to help in any way possible. We decided when this started that we would do what was needed to be sure that animal care and adoption efforts were uninterrupted. JOHNNIE - Proof a cat really can have 9 lives!

JOHNNIE, who has been our resident feline Instagram rock star for a long time, was adopted on August 16. Johnnie first came to our shelter in 2015 when his owner passed away...and we did rehome him to a relative who unfortunately allowed him to go out of the house...Johnnie was injured outside, and the owner brought him back. Shortly after his return, we learned he was FIV+, and a volunteer with a big heart and extra room stepped in and took him home. Our volunteer then went through the traumatic and life changing event of a house fire! Johnnie, the family and all the other pets, survived—another miracle, Thank Goodness! Johnnie came back to the shelter and quickly settled back in. He is on special prescription food to prevent a urinary condition which made placing him a little harder since the best environment was one where he would be the only cat, the King of the Castle.

For 394 days, Johnnie was the King of our Castle—the Friends of the Shelter Castle—until finally, the perfect adopter met him and fell in love!

We miss him dearly but are so happy he is at home with his new mom getting the life he deserves - where he can get belly rubs, kisses and attention 24 hours a day!

Due to the pandemic, we had to cancel our 16th Annual Beefsteak/Tricky Tray - our biggest fundraiser of the year and unfortunately we will not be holding Santa Pet Day 2020. We are disappointed as many of you are who support us year after year. Not to worry, we are re-inventing our fundraising! There are many other ways you can help!

 We are holding FACEBOOK AUCTIONS - keep an eye on our website, cliftonanimalshelter.com for the details and dates. As always, some great items will be available– Designer Handbags, pet items, gift certificates and more!

 Our AMAZON WISHLIST is full of great supplies that we use daily for our shelter residents.

 DONATIONS OF ITEMS from our wish list can also be dropped off at the shelter.

 Our Annual HOLIDAY TREE ORNAMENTS a great way to honor a beloved pet around the holidays, coupon on page 9.

MICKEY & MINNIE ARE LOVING QUARANTINE LIFE! Page 4 ANIMAL ANTICS

We adopted Elmo in April 2020. I’d left my prior cat Hi there Evelyn! with my parents when I moved to the New York City I'm just checking in, thought you might like to see area seven years ago. Now that I’d been put on some pictures of Gamora. She has a ton of toys furlough and my fiancé was working from home for and loves running in the backyard (as long as it's the foreseeable future, we coped with the impact sunny, she hates the rain lol). Gamora thinks she's COVID-19 has had on our lives the only way we a lap dog and loves to lounge on the couch. She know how: by rescuing a cat! does like to go for walks but not anything over 15

When we saw Elmo’s videos on Petfinder, our minutes (she gets tired). She absolutely loves her hearts melted. We read that Elmo struggled with training sessions. We do two 15 min. sessions some mild CH, and that he’d need to be re-tested for daily to teach her new things. She gives paw, she FIV (Editor’s Note: Great News—He’s negative for backs up on command, she sits, she stays and she FIV!). As someone who was born premature herself, comes (to wherever your finger is pointing), we and who has done everything my doctors claim I’d also do "touch" (I believe Andi taught her that never do, we immediately felt a kinship with Elmo, one). We introduced her to the cat gradually, and and set up an appointment to meet him. He even has she doesn't really seem to care. Francesca (the cat) a little line on his nose – as do I! has become more and more accepting with each day. When we first brought Elmo home, he wobbled a lot. In short, we are one happy family! Thanks He had some lesions on his fur that he kept picking again for everything! back open, so we gave him a sweater. He looked Kate positively dapper and very handsome even if it wasn’t his favorite. Elmo didn’t show much interest in jumping, but his slip-slidey-ness didn’t discourage him from destroying several wand toys to date.

We were both half-asleep the first time he jumped on the bed, and we couldn’t believe that neither of us hadn’t put him up there. We feel the same way about him jumping down from the couch. We practiced daily with him on jumping, using treats and toys as motivation. Now, we constantly find him in new places we thought he’d never go, such as on top of the laundry hamper!

After nearly six months of having Elmo, his physical wounds have healed, and we hope that his mental ones have too. He loves to “fight” with his little stuffed monster, bat at his dangly mouse, and chase Hi Liz, any and all wand toys, even if he flounders around We're doing great. Seaweed is amazing. We on his way to tackling them. absolutely adore him. He came out of his shell and he loves to be pet. He loves it so much He loves to be where we are, and will follow us from that he drools all over us, ha-ha. He is such a room to room. He like to sit just outside of whatever house cat now. room where are in and observe and approve our We'd like to thank you and the rest of the actions. Just like the real Elmo, who is very fluffy volunteers at the Clifton Cats rescue for and has a falsetto voice, Elmo’s meows are super doing such an amazing work and for allowing high-pitched and sweet. His fur has grown into its us to adopt Pumpkin aka Seaweed. –Pat Paluch full regality since we brought him home, and he is thriving. And with him in our lives, so are we. -Rebecca & Leland ANIMAL ANTICS Page 5

Hi Evelyn,

We thought you’d like an update on Max - he’s doing wonderfully as a new member of our family!

Max joining our family in February was very good timing - as Covid19 became an issue and lockdown happened - Max was a real comfort to my kids. He was the reason we as a family went out every day to walk Max and make sure he had the exercise he needs.

He became very close with my oldest son Ian, who is autistic. This time of huge changes were I adopted Raven almost 4 years ago! I absolutely difficult for Ian but Max, his buddy, stuck to his love her and she’s my best friend. She is such a side or his lap and helped Ian get used to the sweet silly girl. -Jessica changes that the restrictions brought upon our family.

Max has been to see Dr. Beeber a few times to make sure his eyes are healing well and for a check up. The little guy is doing well!

We want to thank you again for helping Max join our family. He’s been an absolute blessing!

Thank you, Amanda O’Hagan ANIMAL ANTICS Page 7

Jamesy, is his new & forever name. He is living like a king- he’s just THE BEST. Gentle, loving, relaxed, playful, happy (& gorgeous )

Please show this to Caroline and Patti. Thanks for the good work you do.

Margaret & Richard IVY, MISS NEW JERSEY PRINCESS 2019-2020 !

We are showing you this little queen because she is as pretty on the inside as she is on the outside—and she organized a supply drive for the animals at the shelter. We are often fortunate enough to have wonderful people ask for supplies for our animals in lieu of birthday gifts and wedding presents. Perhaps the most touching donations we receive are in memory of someone who has passed away and the family requests donations be sent to our P.O. Box for the Friends of the Shelter instead of flowers. We collect all the names of people who made memorial donations and then we send acknowledgements to the donors

Just wanted to reach out about Bonnie/Bonjuk. We call and the loved one’s family. her Delphi and she’s the perfect pet. We also have a second cat now named Ramona and they’re best friends. Delphi likes to talk to the birds and sit on her cooling pad in the window. She's also a fan of sleeping in bed and always sits on the piano :-)Thank you again so much! -Gregory Pavliv Jayden’s Big Heart

This is JAYDEN PEREZ, some of you may know him from Instagram...he is a young man who champions cause after cause and you can follow his good work online! For his 11th birthday, Jayden collected food and supplies for the Friends of the Shelter. He even came to visit to make a video of the our residents who would benefit from his kindness.

Jayden also brought the volunteers some hand sanitizer when it was hard to find! Everything he does is from the “bottom of his heart” and we thank him from the bottom of our hearts for thinking of us during these tough times. Page 8 ANIMAL ANTICS

ANIMAL ANTICS Page 9 ~HAPPILY EVER AFTER~ My fiancé and I wanted to add another member to our dog family and save another life, but it was so hard to find a dog since everyone was adopting during the quarantine, we were kind of giving up hope.... popped up on our Instagram feed and we couldn't resist her squishy little face! We knew she was our girl. We took our dog, Gizmo in to meet her and it was a huge success! Sasha has adapted so well to our home and is getting used to seeing other dogs and people, as she had a rough upbringing as a puppy being kept in a garage by her previous owner.

We are so happy to have found her and love her so much. She’s a huge cuddler! Sasha and our dog, Gizmo are inseparable, they love playing and cuddling together. She has a long life of snuggles, hikes, and treats ahead of My wife and I had been planning for many her! Huge thank you to Clifton Animal years to get kittens once we became ‘empty Shelter who made this process so nice nesters’, as our kids were both allergic to for us and provided us with toys, treats, cats. When that time finally came around this and a bed for Sasha! We are forever so spring, we contacted the Clifton Animal Shelter grateful for her. and after filling out the application, we made an appointment to come see some kittens. We - Cass DiGiovanni wanted a bonded pair of boys from the same litter, and during our visit, Liz arranged for us to visit with three different pairs of siblings. While they were all wonderful and we would have been happy with any of them, the first pair we visited with, “Brady and Bradley” (now Roger and Stewie), stole our hearts as soon as we met them. They are the cutest little Tuxedo kittens and from the minute they were put in the room with us, they were happy and playing and showed no fears or reservations with us at all. We’ve had them about a month now, they are very happy in their new home and love sitting by the window watching the animals and birds, and looking at the ducks and geese on the lake. They are always together, and will go from play fighting to grooming each other in a matter of seconds. Even at this young age, we can see the different personality traits that each of them have developing. We love them to pieces and could not be happier with the new members of our family, thank you Liz and Brenda and everyone at the shelter for making this happen! - Mike and Marilynn Krupin Page 10 ANIMAL ANTICS
