Our volunteers have been amazing, many being flexible with schedules, keeping everyone safe and trying to help in any way possible. We decided when this started that we would do what was needed to be sure that animal care and adoption efforts were uninterrupted. While many other rescue groups were temporarily fostering their pets during “lockdown”, our Friends of the Shelter residents stayed in the building. JOHNNIE, who has been our resident feline Instagram rock star for a long time, was adopted on August 16. Johnnie first came to our shelter in 2015 when his owner passed away...and we did rehome him to a relative who unfortunately allowed him to go out of the house...Johnnie was injured outside, and the owner brought him back. Shortly after his return, we learned he was FIV+, and a volunteer with a big heart and extra room stepped in and took him home. Our volunteer then went through the traumatic and life changing event of a house fire! Johnnie, the family and all the other pets, survived—another miracle, Thank Goodness! Johnnie came back to the shelter and quickly settled back in. He is on special prescription food to prevent a urinary condition which made placing him a little harder since the best environment was one where he would be the only cat, the King of the Castle. For 394 days, Johnnie was the King of our Castle—the Friends of the Shelter Castle—until finally, the perfect adopter met him and fell in love! We miss him dearly but are so happy he is at home with his new mom getting the life he deserves - where he can get belly rubs, kisses and attention 24 hours a day! Due to the pandemic, we had to cancel our 16th Annual Beefsteak/Tricky Tray - our biggest fundraiser of the year and unfortunately we will not be holding Santa Pet Day 2020. We are disappointed as many of you are who support us year after year. Not to worry, we are re-inventing our fundraising! There are many other ways you can help! ANIMAL ANTICS Page 3 MAIZE ... now “A. MAIZE GRACE” ! I grew up having cats my whole life. After my children were born, slowly my fur babies Maize is doing quite well. Adopting these furbabies has been the best part of 2020.     WINKIE DM 1 PDSA DICKIN MEDAL WINKIE DM 1 “For delivering a message under exceptionally difficult conditions and so contributing to the rescue of an Air Crew while serving with the RAF in February, 1942.” Date of Award: 2 December 1943 WINKIE’S STORY Carrier pigeon, Winkie, received the first PDSA Dickin Medal from Maria Dickin on 2 December 1943 for the heroic role she played in saving the lives of a downed air crew. The four-man crew’s Beaufort Bomber ditched in the sea more than 100 miles from base after coming under enemy fire during a mission over Norway. Unable to radio the plane’s position, they released Winkie and despite horrendous weather and being covered in oil, she made it home to raise the alarm. Home for Winkie was more than 120 miles from the downed aircraft. Her owner, George Ross, discovered her and contacted RAF Leuchars in Fife to raise the alarm. “DESPITE HORRENDOUS WEATHER AND BEING COVERED IN OIL SHE MADE IT HOME ...” Although it had no accurate position for the downed crew, the RAF managed to calculate its position, using the time between the plane crashing and Winkie’s return, the wind direction and likely effect of the oil on her flight speed. They launched a rescue operation within 15 minutes of her return home. Following the successful rescue, the crew held a celebration dinner in honour of Winkie’s achievement and she reportedly ‘basked in her cage’ as she was toasted by the officers. Winkie received her PDSA Dickin Medal a year later.

    RIFLEMAN KHAN DM 19 PDSA DICKIN MEDAL RIFLEMAN KHAN DM 19 “For rescuing L/Cpl. Muldoon from drowning under heavy shell fire at the assault of Walcheren, November 1944, while serving with the 6th Cameronians (SR).” Date of Award: 27 March 1945 RIFLEMAN KHAN’S STORY In 1942 the Government issued a call for dogs to help with the war effort. The Railton family from Tolworth, Surrey answered that call and offered their pet German Shepherd for service. Accepted into the War Dog’s training school, War Dog 147 as he was known, showed remarkable intelligence and skill. Following training, Khan joined the 6th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and teamed up with handler Lance Corporal James ( Jimmy) Muldoon. He became known as ‘Khan’ after the Indian soldiers who served with the British and soon saw action across Europe. “A DIRECT HIT PLUNGED THE UNIT AND KHAN INTO THE WATER.” Jimmy and Khan became inseparable and during a night-time landing craft assault on Walcheren Island in Belgium the strength of their bond really showed. As the landing craft approached the shore it came under heavy artillery bombardment. A direct hit plunged the unit and Khan into the water. Khan quickly made it to shore. His handler wasn’t so lucky. Unable to swim and weighed down by his pack, Jimmy Muldoon was floundering and a sitting duck for the enemy. Khan heard Jimmy’s cries and plunged back into the water. He quickly found him and dragged him back to shore by the collar of his uniform. The scene was witnessed by other unit members who called for Khan’s heroism to be formally recognised.

Various Recipients Other Awards Animals in War Memorial, London 2 Maria Dickin (1870-1951) Maria Dickin CBE was a social reformer and an animal welfare pioneer. In 1917 she founded the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). • PDSA is a British veterinary charity which provides care for sick and injured animals of the poor. • PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity. 3 Foundation and development During World War I, animal welfare pioneer Maria Dickin worked to improve the dreadful state of animal health in the Whitechapel area of London. She wanted to open a clinic where East Enders living in poverty could receive free treatment for their sick and injured animals. Despite widespread scepticism, she opened her free "dispensary" in a Whitechapel basement on Saturday 17 November 1917. It was an immediate success and she was soon forced to find larger premises. Within six years, Maria Dickin had designed and equipped her first horse-drawn clinic, and soon a fleet of mobile dispensaries was established. PDSA vehicles soon became a common sight throughout the country. Eventually, PDSA's role was defined by two Acts of Parliament, in 1949 and 1956, that continue to govern its activities today. 4 The Dickin Medal In 1943, the PDSA created the Dickin Medal and named it for Maria Dickin. It was initially to honour the work of animals in World War II. It is awarded to animals that have displayed "conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defence Units".
