Rifleman Khan Dm 19 Pdsa Dickin Medal Rifleman Khan Dm 19 RIFLEMAN KHAN DM 19 PDSA DICKIN MEDAL RIFLEMAN KHAN DM 19 “For rescuing L/Cpl. Muldoon from drowning under heavy shell fire at the assault of Walcheren, November 1944, while serving with the 6th Cameronians (SR).” Date of Award: 27 March 1945 RIFLEMAN KHAN’S STORY In 1942 the Government issued a call for dogs to help with the war effort. The Railton family from Tolworth, Surrey answered that call and offered their pet German Shepherd for service. Accepted into the War Dog’s training school, War Dog 147 as he was known, showed remarkable intelligence and skill. Following training, Khan joined the 6th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and teamed up with handler Lance Corporal James ( Jimmy) Muldoon. He became known as ‘Khan’ after the Indian soldiers who served with the British and soon saw action across Europe. “A DIRECT HIT PLUNGED THE UNIT AND KHAN INTO THE WATER.” Jimmy and Khan became inseparable and during a night-time landing craft assault on Walcheren Island in Belgium the strength of their bond really showed. As the landing craft approached the shore it came under heavy artillery bombardment. A direct hit plunged the unit and Khan into the water. Khan quickly made it to shore. His handler wasn’t so lucky. Unable to swim and weighed down by his pack, Jimmy Muldoon was floundering and a sitting duck for the enemy. Khan heard Jimmy’s cries and plunged back into the water. He quickly found him and dragged him back to shore by the collar of his uniform. The scene was witnessed by other unit members who called for Khan’s heroism to be formally recognised. The newly-promoted ‘Rifleman’ Khan received the PDSA Dickin Medal from the Battalion Commander before an honorary parade on 27 March 1945. The citation read: “For rescuing L/Cpl. Muldoon from drowning under heavy shell fire at the assault of Walcheren, November 1944, while serving with the 6th Cameronians (SR).” After the war, Rifleman Khan returned to the Railton family home. In July of 1947, Khan, along with 15 other, canine PDSA Dickin Medal recipients, was invited to march in the National Dog Tournament. Barry Railton wrote to Jimmy Muldoon and asked him to attend the event. Reunited for the first time in two years, it was plain for all to see just how close their bond was and the Railton family agreed that Khan should return to Scotland to live with Jimmy. ©Imperial War Museum H 25389 DM THE PDSA DICKIN MEDAL The close relationship between humans and animals is rarely more profound than in times of conflict. Throughout history, animals have stood alongside humans in action and shown incredible bravery and devotion to duty when confronted with the horrors of war. Our founder, Maria Dickin, CBE, introduced the PDSA Dickin Medal on 2 December 1943, at the height of World War II. A tireless campaigner for animal welfare, Maria Dickin was determined to raise the status of animals in society and improve their care. The Medal was instituted to recognise outstanding acts of gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war, throughout the world. Regarded worldwide as the animals’ Victoria Cross, the PDSA Dickin Medal is as inspirational and relevant today as it was 75 years ago. It is a fitting tribute to the gallant animals ‘who also served’ and whose remarkable contributions helped save countless lives. The highest honour any animal can receive, the Medal stands as testament to the Diligent, Resolute, Fearless, and Relentless qualities shown by animals in action. The most famous and the oldest of the charity’s awards is the PDSA Dickin Medal. It acknowledges outstanding acts of bravery displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war, worldwide. The Medal is recognised as the animals’ Victoria Cross and is the highest British honour for animal bravery in military conflicts. The medal was instituted in 1943 Maria Dickin. Maria Dickin CBE PDSA owes its foundation to the vision of one woman - Maria Elisabeth Dickin - and her determination to raise the status of animals, and the standard of their care, in society. During the First World War, Maria Dickin CBE worked to improve the dreadful state of animal health in the Whitechapel area of London. She wanted to open a clinic where East Enders living in poverty could receive free treatment for their sick and injured animals. Left: Despite the scepticism of the Establishment, Maria Dickin opened her free 'dispensary' in a Whitechapel basement on Saturday 17th November 1917. It was an immediate success and she was soon forced to find larger premises. Photo PDSA. Within six years this extraordinary woman had designed and equipped her first horse-drawn clinic and soon a fleet of mobile dispensaries was established. PDSA vehicles soon became a comforting and familiar sight throughout the country. With success came increased attention from her critics at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Ministry of Agrigulture.

FROM 1903 TO ABOUT 1933 The following list of the first sail yachts in the Club cannot be said to be complete, nevertheless it provides a record of the better known vessels and was compiled from newspaper files of The Province, News-Advertiser, The World and The Sun during the first three decades of the Club activities. Vancouver newspapers gave very complete coverage of sailing events in that period when yacht racing commanded wide public interest. ABEGWEIT—32 ft. aux. Columbia River centerboard cruising sloop built at Steveston in 1912 for H. C. Shaw, who joined the Club in 1911. ADANAC-18 ft. sloop designed and built by Horace Stone in 1910. ADDIE—27 ft. open catboat sloop built in 1902 for Bert Austin at Vancouver Shipyard by William Watt, the first yacht constructed at the yard. Addie was in the original R.V.Y.C. fleet. ADELPIII—44 ft. schooner designed by E. B. Schock for Thicke brothers. Built 1912, sailed by the Thicke brothers till 1919 when sold to Bert Austin, who sold it in 1922 to Seattle. AILSA 1-28.5 ft. D class aux. yawl, Mower design. Built 1907 by Bob Granger, originally named Ta-Meri. Subsequent owners included Ron Maitland, Tom Ramsay, Alan Leckie, Bill Ball and N. S. McDonald. AILSA II—22.5 ft. D class aux. yawl built 1911 by Bob Granger. Owners included J. H. Willard and Joe Wilkinson.
