There must be about twenty of them, and they are hardly moving. There is an occasional shout, and some pushing and shoving. Then it becomes quiet again. Around the group of men are scattered another thirty or forty people who stand there watching. Some of them are carrying torches. More than a mile away across the snowy fields can be seen the lights of a town, but the men continue playing their game in the dark. They are playing a traditional kind of football that is now very rare in Britain. Three or four hundred years ago, mass football was a common and popular sport. As towns and cities developed, and as the countryside was enclosed for agriculture, people lost the places where they had played their games. For this game is not played on a [1] Street Football pitch or in a sports ground. It was played through the streets of a town or across the fields around a village. [1] There were no fixed rules, and every game had its own different traditions and customs. Few of them survive today. One of the places where a game has continued for hundreds of years is Ashbourne,( [2] a small market town in the middle of England. In 2003 I spent a year living near Ashbourne, and I was able to watch the game in 2004.

    STREET SOCCER Street soccer, pick-up game, sandlot soccer or a kick-about whatever title you give to the format the idea is to give the game of soccer back to the players. Past generations learned to play the game on their own with other kids in the neighborhood or at school in these kid organized games. Today youth sports are overly adult controlled and influenced. It’s difficult today for youngsters to have a pick-up game since the streets have too many cars, the sandlot now has a mini- mall on it and parents are reluctant, with good cause, to let their child go blocks away from home on Saturday to play in a game on his or her own. Street soccer is a way for soccer clubs to give the game back to the players in the community. Once a week, or whatever frequency fits the circumstances the best, a club can have organized spontaneity. The club will provide the fields and supervision. Adults will be on site for safety and general supervision, but otherwise it is all up to the players to organize the games. The adults should NOT coach, cheer, criticize, referee or in any other way involve themselves in the game. The best bet for parents is to drop off their child, go run some errands, and then come back to pick up your child an hour or two latter. The coaches are on site NOT to coach, but to supervise, be on hand for any serious injuries and any severe discipline problems. Additionally the coaches are there to provide the game equipment and to let the players know when each game segment starts and stops.

    PRESS RELEASE AMPUTEES GET GREATER STANDING IN SPORTS IN ST LUCIA Programme aims to tackle lack of opportunities for disabled people to get involved in community activities and sport SAINT LUCIA, Castries: Twenty-five coaches, special ed teachers and community youth mentors from across St. Lucia attended a two day workshop to better understand how sport can offer a wide range of benefits to amputees, people with congenital limb deficiencies and persons with restricted use of limbs. Supported by the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program (DAP) and facilitated by the Sacred Sports Foundation Inc (SSF), the workshop formed part of chAMPS, an active limbs saves lives programme focusing on adaptive sports, recreation and rehabilitation for persons with disabilities in St Lucia and took place at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on April 28th and 29th in partnership with the England Amputee Football Association (EAFA). EAFA founder David Tweed, a professional amputee footballer, qualified coach and British adaptive skier delivered the workshop alongside EAFA Head Coach Owen Colye Jr. who administers the EAFL National League and has worked extensively with disability and women’s football. The workshop participants, who included a number of amputees from St. Lucia, took part in sessions ranging from understanding amputee football, to developing and delivering amputee physical activity sessions of their own. In addition, communication styles, preparation of delivery and adaptability when delivering to an impairment specific group or an individual with a disability was also covered. Diabetes is among the leading causes of morbidity, with 40% of Caribbean death resulting from cardiovascular diseases related to hypertension and diabetes.
