JULY 7–10, 2015 “ Clearly, the question of the challenge of globalization for the mission of Jesuit higher education needs to be answered by each institution, in its unique social, cultural, and religious circumstances. But I wish to emphasize that it is also a question that calls for a common and universal response, drawn of course from your diverse cultural perspectives, from Jesuit higher education as a whole, as an apostolic sector.” — ADOLFO NICOLÁS, S.J. Superior General WELCOME EXPANDING THE JESUIT HIGHER EDUCATION NETWORK COLLABORATIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE I am delighted to welcome you to the July 2015 Melbourne conference. This meet- ing, which follows on the conversations we had in Mexico City in 2010, is focused on “Expanding the Jesuit Higher Education Network: Collaborations for Social Justice.” This week we look forward to a series of discussions and presentations designed to highlight current collaborative projects taking place around the world, and to brainstorm both regionally and as a group about future opportunities. We will also see a newly-created video on “Social Justice and the Jesuit University” which includes an interview with Father General Adolfo Nicolás. This book includes background reading, project descriptions, speaker biographies and additional information related to our conference. I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone at Australian Catholic University for hosting us this week and for partnering with us in organizing this global effort. I am also grateful to our colleagues at the University of Melbourne and at Newman College for generous- ly welcoming us on their campuses for evening receptions as well as mass on Wednesday night. I hope and trust our time together will be fruitful and inspiring. AMDG, Michael J. Garanzini, S.J.
