NOOK Book. Chapter 1 The National Commissioner of Police smiled. Only one of the three men smiled back. Stig Malm had beautiful white teeth and liked smiling to show them off. Over the years he had quite unconsciously acquired a whole register of smiles. The one he was using now could only be described as ingratiating and fawning. The chief of the Security Police suppressed yawn and Martin Beck blew his nose. He often did not appear until late in the morning and even then he was usually inaccessible even to his closest colleagues. He had even had a Thermos of coffee and real china cups brought in, instead of the usual plastic mugs. Stig Malm got up and poured out the coffee. Martin Beck knew that before he sat down again he would first pinch the crease in his trousers and then carefully run his hand across his well-cut wavy hair. Stig Malm was his immediate superior and Martin Beck had no respect for him whatsoever. His self-satisfied coquettishness and insinuating officiousness toward senior potentates were characteristics that Martin Beck had ceased to be annoyed by and nowadays found simply foolish. What did irritate him, on the other hand, and often constituted an obstacle to his work, was the man's rigidity and lack of self- criticism, a lack just as total and destructive as his ignorance of everything to do with practical police work.

kvarter Volume 07 • 2013 akademiskacademic quarter Porous Borders Crossing the Boundaries to ‘Eastern Europe’ in Scandinavian Crime Fiction Anna Estera Mrozewicz PhD, Assistant Professor at the Department of Film, Television and New Media at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland and pursued post-doctoral studies at the Department of Scandina- vian Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen (2010– 2012). Her current research project investigates the concept of ‘East- ern Europe’ in Scandinavian film, literature and visual arts. Abstract In Scandinavian crime fiction, an implicit dynamics is noticeable between the adjacent worlds: Scandinavia and ‘Eastern Europe’. The author of the article approaches their relation using the two interrelated concepts of border and boundary (Casey, 2011). While borders are fixed and established by conventional agreements, boundaries are natural, perforated, and undermine the impenetra- bility of the border. Accordingly, two main strands are discernible within the representations of ‘Eastern Europe’ in Scandinavian crime fiction: a ‘border perspective’ and a ‘boundary perspective’. The first strand is rooted in the old world with pronounced nation- al divisions, while the other anticipates a globalised world, involv- ing a dynamic view of the relation between the neighbours across the Baltic. As the article attempts to demonstrate, the border/bound- ary distinction can be fruitfully applied to the analysis of the Scan- dinavian discourse on ‘Eastern Europe’ with all its implications. Keywords border/boundary, Scandinavian crime fiction, ‘Eastern Europe’, adjacency, suppression, neighbour. Volume 07 350 Porous Borders kvarter Anna Estera Mrozewicz akademiskacademic quarter The drama of crossing borders The acts of crossing borders between ‘Eastern Europe’1 and Scandi- navia are typically represented as accompanied by strong affect and fear – especially in crime fiction.

  • Wallanders Ystad

Ovio OLARU Institute for Scandinavian Languages and Literature, Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca, Romania [email protected] NATURE AESTHETICS. SPACE IN CONTEMPORARY SCANDINAVIAN LITERATURE Recommended Citation: Olaru, Ovio. “Nature Aesthetics. Space in Contemporary Scandinavian Literature”. Metacritic Journal for Comparative Studies and Theory 6.1 (2020): https://doi.org/10.24193/mjcst.2020.9.07 Abstract: This paper attempts to undertake a geo-literary analysis of contemporary Scandinavian literature, departing from the pastoral nature representations of 19th century literary awakening and lingering on recent Scandinavian crime fiction, as this subgenre represents the Scandinavian peninsula’s latest contribution to World Literature and a “temporary sub-centre” (Mads Rosendahl Thomsen) of provisional international interest. Transcending both the idyllical natural setting of romanticism and the estrangement of modernism, Scandinavian literature succeeds in re-establishing the rural as predilect locus of narrative unfolding. The paper argues that the rural mise- en-scene is symptomatic for a broader ideological background, as it best reflects the ecological ethos that cuts across the peninsula’s history, from the nationalistic discourse of nature to the criticism directed against the dismantling of social-democracy under the pressure of neoliberalism. Keywords: literary geography, Scandinavian literature, crime fiction, rural space, World Literature The Scandinavian space has long been the object of foreign fascination, regardless if it acted as mere background for Norse mythology or if it represented the picturesque setting where the modern welfare-state mythology unfolded in all its chic IKEA glory. An instrumental element for the understanding of Scandinavian literature in its proper 95 METACRITIC JOURNAL FOR COMPARATIVE STUDIES AND THEORY 6.1 context is the employment of specifically Nordic topoi, the exoticism of which has become a staple of Nordic aesthetics.

LEM Notes for The Bat, Jo Nesbo … April 2018 for May 8, 2018 Best Book Club Meeting 1 LEM Notes for The Bat, Jo Nesbo … April 2018 for May 8, 2018 Best Book Club Meeting 2 Wikipedia – History of crime fiction Crime is a typically 19th-, 20th- and 21st-century genre, dominated by British and American writers. This article explores its historical development as a genre. Crime Fiction came to be recognized as a distinct literary genre, with specialist writers and a devoted readership, in the 19th century. Earlier novels and stories were typically devoid of systematic attempts at detection: There was no detective, whether amateur or professional, trying to figure out how and by whom a particular crime was committed; there were no police trying to solve a case; neither was there any discussion of motives, alibis, the modus operandi, or any of the other elements which make up the modern crime writing. …Forerunners of today's crime fiction include the ghost story, the horror story, and the revenge story. An example of an early crime/revenge story is the American poet and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe's (1809–1849) tale "The Cask of Amontillado", published in 1846. Poe created the first fictional detective (a word unknown at the time) in the character of C. Auguste Dupin, as the central character of some of his short stories (which he called "tales of ratiocination"). In the words of William L. De Andrea (Encyclopedia Mysteriosa, 1994), he was the first to create a character whose interest for the reader lay primarily (even solely) on his ability to find hidden truths.

The authors seem to be using the weather to set the tone for their novels so far and what is remarkable is that each of them have been unique in approach to storytelling whilst consistently adding something to the body of work as a whole. What a shame I can't read S This is the first co-authored novel I've ever read. For instance of the hotel balcony at Andraitz, where he had spent his vacation five months earlier. Of the heavy, motionless heat and of the bright sunshine over the quayside and the fishing boats and of the limitless, deep-blue sky above the mountain ridge on the other side of the bay. That made the United States briefly popular in a tragic period in our history. But as the Nordic crime wave hit British and American soil beginning in the nineties , this egregious blot on the reputation of publishers was finally remedied One thing I don't recall noticing when I first read this book back in the s was how it is set in a definite time -- , with protest demonstrations worldwide about America's involvement in Vietnam. Aug 17, Mark Stevens rated it it was amazing. Another super book in the series about the morose, melancholy and mirthless detective Martin Beck - though it is an ensemble piece in reality as his colleagues are heavily involved as well rounded totally believable characters in their own right.
