Her current research project investigates the concept of ‘East- ern Europe’ in Scandinavian film, literature and visual arts. Abstract In Scandinavian crime fiction, an implicit dynamics is noticeable between the adjacent worlds: Scandinavia and ‘Eastern Europe’. The author of the article approaches their relation using the two interrelated concepts of border and boundary (Casey, 2011). While borders are fixed and established by conventional agreements, boundaries are natural, perforated, and undermine the impenetra- bility of the border. Accordingly, two main strands are discernible within the representations of ‘Eastern Europe’ in Scandinavian crime fiction: a ‘border perspective’ and a ‘boundary perspective’. The first strand is rooted in the old world with pronounced nation- al divisions, while the other anticipates a globalised world, involv- ing a dynamic view of the relation between the neighbours across the Baltic. As the article attempts to demonstrate, the border/bound- ary distinction can be fruitfully applied to the analysis of the Scan- dinavian discourse on ‘Eastern Europe’ with all its implications. Keywords border/boundary, Scandinavian crime fiction, ‘Eastern Europe’, adjacency, suppression, neighbour. • Wallanders Ystad

  • Events Below the Surface a Reading of Henning Mankell’S the Troubled Man
Events below the Surface A Reading of Henning Mankell’s The Troubled Man JOHN LINGARD ABSTRACT: Den orolige mannen (2009) [The Troubled Man, 2011] is Henning Mankell’s twelfth and last Kurt Wallander novel. Uniquely in the series, it combines detective and spy fiction. Its rich metaphoric texture is based on a continued play between surface and depth, between what is illusory and what is true. Wallander’s investigation into the disappearance of an aristocratic former naval officer, Håkan von Enke, and the death of that officer’s wife Louise, takes the detective back into the Cold War with its atmosphere of spies, moles, and treachery. Mankell also offers readers an unprecedented look into Wallander’s inner life where increasing moments of forgetfulness are leading him towards “det tomma universum som heter Alzheimer” [the empty universe that is called Alzheimer’s] (555). The novel is further enhanced by a metafictional retrospect of Wallander’s earlier career and his most important relationships: with his daughter Linda and the love of his life, Baiba Liepa.

  • 1: Vor Ort: the Functions and Early Roots of German Regional Crime Fiction
1: Vor Ort: The Functions and Early Roots of German Regional Crime Fiction Kyle Frackman HE IDEA THAT LOCATION WOULD BE IMPORTANT to the production and Treception of crime fiction is not new.1 Since their earliest existence, Kriminalliteratur and Kriminalerzählungen have been bound to a cer- tain necessity of place.2 In some ways, the concept is basic, especially if one considers that one of the very functions of the wider genre is to situ- ate a particular crime in a particular place. This often requires a detec- tive or some investigatory figure to examine the scene of the crime (the Tatort, an element so obviously important that it became the title of one of Germany’s most successful and long-lasting television series).3 The set- ting of a mystery or crime story is often one of its primary defining char- acteristics: Sherlock Holmes’s London, Agatha Christie’s enclosed manor houses and train compartments, Kurt Wallander’s Scania or Sweden more generally, V. I. Warshawski’s Chicago, Inspector Morse’s Oxford. The subject of this essay, crime fiction native to and reflective of particular regions in Germany, represents in a way a hyperextension of the impor- tance of location, in which the various settings of these stories become their creation myths or existential foundations. This essay argues that German regional crime fiction is both a modern development and simul- taneously a recollection of crime fiction’s journalistic and literary begin- nings. I will demonstrate that regional crime fiction has connections to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Fallgeschichten (case stories) that fas- cinated a developing reading public and satisfied readers’ taste for sen- sational details with a more local flavor.

  • Investigating Nordic Noir
Investigating Nordic Noir By Sofia Alexi A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Victoria University of Wellington 2017 3 Abstract Alexi Sofia, Film Studies, Victoria University of Wellington Abstract of Master’s Thesis, Submitted 10 April 2017: “Investigating Nordic noir” Scandinavian crime films and television series have become popular in recent years. This thesis explores some of the key texts in ‘Nordic noir’ through a discussion of detectives, the environment, and visual style. The emphasis in the project is on textual analysis. The first chapter examines the figures of Wallander and Lund in Wallander and Forbrydelsen respectively. I argue that the conflicts Nordic detectives often have between work and the domestic sphere are an indication of how gender stereotypes are challenged in the Scandinavian crime genre. The second chapter considers the role of the natural and built environments in Nordic noir. Features such as forests and water play a crucial role in Forbrydelsen because of the ways in which they create uncertainty, anticipation, and suspense. The urban spaces of Bron/Broen develop a sense of anonymity that recalls the function of the city in classic film noir. Rather than developing links between Sweden and Denmark, the series suggests that the Øresund bridge that spans the two countries is ultimately a disconnecting, centrifugal force that functions as what Marc Augé would call a ‘non-place’. The final chapter considers the role of colour and light in the films Insomnia and Jar City. My analysis demonstrates that Nordic noir encompasses more than naturalism and realism.

  • Kurt Wallander's Journey Into Autumn
Kurt Wallander’s Journey into Autumn A Reading of Henning Mankell’s The Fifth Woman JOHN LINGARD ABSTRACT: The last decade has been a golden age of detective fiction in the four Scandinavian countries: Sweden; Denmark; Norway; and Iceland. If Henning Mankell stands in the first rank of Nordic mystery writers, it is because he takes the type of book known in Sweden as a “deckare” and gives it the complexity of a superior novel. Mankell not only endows his now famous detective, Kurt Wallander, with a brooding depth of character, but places him in a strikingly realistic setting, and a three-dimensional social context subject to the forces of change. Like the novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Thomas Hardy, the Wallander series has a memorable balance of plot, character, and atmosphere. In an article in The New York Times Book Review, Marilyn Stasio provides a concise summation of Mankell’s strengths as a novelist: “Apart from his uncommon skill at devising dense, multilayered plots, Mankell’s forte is matching mood to setting and subject.”
