Kiwanian of the Year 2015

At our Installation Brunch Past President Tonicia hon- oured a very special Kiwanian for her dedication to the Kiwanis Club over the years.

She can be described as our resident photographer and there is not a service project that she is not in- volved in in some shape or form.

She served as President from 1997-1998 and 2004- 2005 and has been a member of the Kiwanis Club from 1989. Her dedication to service and the children of Cayman is truly admirable and PP Tonicia men- tioned her gratitude for her support as her Secretary during her presidency.

Congratulations to Linda Chapman-Key on being awarded Kiwanian of the Year 2015.

The 2015-16 Executive Board of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman

#KidsNeedKiwanis 2015-2016 President of Kiwanis International, Sue Petrisin stated, “As we start this new Kiwanis year, I ask you to pause and remember why you first joined this remarkable organization. I joined to make a difference in my communi- ty. I bet that’s why you joined too. Continue to make that difference. Re-energize those around you. Be the spark that helps children live better lives. Show the world what you are doing to help children.”

At our Installation Brunch we decided to take our pledge and join the #kidsneedkiwanis movement. We downloaded our pledge cards and wrote our commitments for the coming year. We have posted these images on our social me- dia, to share our photos. What are you doing to make your community a better place for children?

Eliminate BBQ Fundraiser Last year we held our first happy hour event towards Eliminate. This year we had a BBQ at Dukes on September 9th 2015. Guests enjoyed an all you can eat BBQ and a raffle prize drawing which included a tablet and speakers do- nated by Lime. We raised over $1400 in support of the UNICEF and Kiwanis International project “Eliminate” the aim of which is to Eliminate MNT (maternal and neonatal tetanus) in 21 countries. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 49,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.

Why do we do it? Because no one should suffer from a preventable disease, especially one that only costs $1.80 to prevent.

Ogier sponsor Buy a Kid Breakfast! We were very excited to receive a cheque from Ogier for $5,000 in the first of three instalments to our Buy a Kid Breakfast programme. Ogier’s Community Enhancement Committee announced earlier in the year that they would come on board as a sponsor; providing monetary donations to Buy a Kid Breakfast and supporting our other key projects with volunteers.

We look forward to this partnership continuing and welcoming them to our service projects. Pictured below is Rachael Reynolds and Giorgio Subiotto, both Partner’s at Ogier presenting the cheque to Past Presidents Tonicia and Kadi.

Key Leader 2015

During the weekend of Sept. 25-27 at the St. Ignatius campus, 67 students, including six from par- ticipated in the Kiwanis Key Leader retreat.

Kim White from Atlanta, representing Kiwanis International, was the lead facilitator, assisted Committee Chairper- son Kadi Merren-Pentney and eight past leaders serving as student facilitators.

“This was my fifth year coordinating Key Leader and each year I learn something new about leadership, whether it’s from the facilitator or from the students,” said Ms. White. She was pleased that Kiwanis and local sponsors saw the value in supporting an event that can positively impact students and help change lives for the better. “I look forward to many Key Leader weekends to come,” she said.

Students were taught the five principles of service leadership: personal integrity; personal growth; respect for yourself and others; building community; and the pursuit of excellence.

The event was offered to students for a fee of $25 with the balance coming from the Cayman business communi- ty. Island Heritage donated $10,000. St. Ignatius, Casanova Restaurant, Marriott Beach Resort, The Security Centre and Reliable Industries also came on board as sponsors.

#kidsCARE at Book Mobile

The book mobile welcomed some very friendly, furry visitors with the #kidsCARE team on 17 October. In their sec- ond visit to the book mobile, the team visited George Town Primary as part of their educational programme to teach children the importance of animals in the communities and world around them.

The kids had fun drawing with an animal needs activity and reading humane education books. Special guests Indie and Shadow also came and spent time with the children and were a big hit.

Coverage of our partnership also made the news in the summer: Thank you to #kidsCARE for paying us a visit!
