He retired at the end of the 1982 school year after 17 years of service to St. Edward's . In receiving the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award, Mangum is the second St. Edward's faculty member so honored. The first was Brother Simon Srffibner, C.S.C., Professor of English, in 1968. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Laura Drake, with this production, makes her debut as a director on the Mary Moody Northen stage. She currently serves on the St. Edward's theatre arts fac­ ulty as an instructor in voice and diction and has held teaching positions at the University of Texas at Austin and Loyola University in New Orleans. She has served as director for the Shoestring Theatre at UT-Austin, as guest director for the Southern Speech Convention, and as Director/Choreo­ grapher with the resident acting company at the Univ~rsity of New Orleans and the Jewish Communi- ty Center in New Orleans. She was guest artist at the University of New Orleans and principal ac­ tress for the New Shakespeare Company in San Francisco, for the Oak­ land Actor's Reportory in Oakland, California; and Principal Artist and Writer for the Menagerie in San Francisco. Ms. Drake holds an MFA from the University of Texas and a BA from California State University in San Francisco. CARRACCIO (Scenic/Technical Designer) served as assistant art director during the 1980-81 season of ABC Television shows, includ­ ing "Soap," "Benson," "I'm A Big Girl Now," and "It's A Living:' He has been involved in scene design for the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival. SUSAN LOUGHRAN (Costume Designer) is a native New Yorker now beginning her fourth year as a member of the St. Edward's theatre arts faculty. Ms. Loughran has worked in Regional, Off-Broadway and Dinner Theatres throughout the country. She recently designed the col­ orful costumes for "The Taming of the Shrew" and for the last spring production, "Equus:' HILLARY GARREETT (Assistant to the Director/Stage Manager) is a junior from Dresden , Tennessee . He appeared in "Chapter Two" with Marion Ross , in "Bells Are Ringing " with Grant Goodeve, and understu­ died Alan Fein stein in "St icks an d Bones :' Other shows have included "Our Town," and "The Pri me of Miss Jean Brodie:' He also served as as­ sistant stage manager for "Taming of the Shrew:' BRYAN BLUMENTHAL (George Haverstick) is a first year st udent at St. Ed_ward's from Lockport, Illinois . This is his debut on th e Mary Moody Northen stage. JUDY CUMMINGS (Mrs. McGillicuddy) is a senior acting major from Ashuelot, New Hampshire. She has appeared in "Bells Are Ringing" with Grant Goodeve, "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," "1968," "Music Man" and "Frogs:' MICHAEL GOEHRING (Mr. McGillicuddy) is a senior acting major from Nebraska.     Spring 1989 135 An Interview with David Rabe Philip C. Kolin Coming from America's heartland (Dubuque, Iowa), David Rabe was drafted in 1965 at the age of 25 and completed a tour of duty in the literal Vietnam that he would later project symbolically on the American stage. Defining that event for himself, Rabe became one of the most promising playwrights of the post-1970 theatre. After his discharge from the Army, Rabe finished an MA. in theatre at Villanova University and worked on the early drafts of what critics have labeled his Vietnam Trilogy— The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, Sticks and Bones, and Streamers. He then put in an 18-month stint as a feature writer for the Sunday Pictorial magazine of the New Haven Register, publishing more than two dozen hauntingly beautiful and painful stories on the draft resistance movement, drugs, sports, the arts, and various rituals in American society, topics that also surface in the plays. In 1970 Rabe began an eventful 12-year friendship with Joe Papp who introduced, directed, produced, and defended Rabe's early work. Papp's admiration for Rabe was unqualified: "He is the most important writer we've ever had" (quoted in Mel Gussow, "2nd David Rabe Play to Join, Tavlo Hummel' at Public Theater," New York Times [Nov. 3, 1971]: 43). Pavlo Hummel and Sticks and Bones made theatre history when both plays were performed at the same time at the Public Theater, Pavlo at the Newman and Sticks at the Anspacher. In March of 1972 Papp prevailed upon Rabe to move Sticks to Broadway (Rabe's first appearance there) where Rabe won a Tony.

    Atatürk Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Dergisi 2013 17 (3): 71-78 Story-telling and Subjectivity in the Selected Dramas of August Wilson and David Rabe Ahmet BEŞE (*) Abstract: The tensions between past and present, self and other, life and death, and the topics as confusion, self-doubt, and self-questioning in an unstable and infinitely changeable state of insights fill the works of contemporary American dramatists by means of story-telling. Story-telling as dramatic narrative can specifically be seen in the dramas of both August Wilson and David Rabe. Their plays include contemporary forms of story-telling in order to reveal fractured and fragmented characters and their subjectivity. Rabe employs stories, especially in his famous Vietnam trilogy; meanwhile storytelling as part of the oral narrative experiences of African-Americans is the central prominence to the development of August Wilson’s plays. This study attempts to reflect the function of story-telling in the selected dramas of the authors under discussion, and to analyze how the characters reveal themselves and their subjectivity in stories.
