TRIP REPORT HUNGARY - WILDLIFE OF THE KISKUNSAG Thursday 18th - Tuesday 23rd May 2017 TOUR PARTICIPANTS ANDREW DUCAT SUE SMALL PENNY GRACE DAVID SMITH BRIAN JAMES RICHARD STANLEY HOWARD MANNERS JOHN WILLIAMS JUDY ROSS DRIVER ZOLI TOUR LEADERS GÁBOR ORBÁN, ANDREA KATONA & STEVE GRIMWADE Hawfinch by Andrew Ducat Thursday 18th May 2017 Our group met at Gatwick for a mid-morning flight to Budapest which took off a little later than scheduled, but in only just over two hours we found ourselves in a warm Budapest with temperatures around 25 degrees. After picking up luggage we met up with Andrea, one of our guides for the tour who took us to our bus which was driven by Zoli (who had driven on our tour in 2013). It didn’t long to load up and we were soon on our way to a small village where we were shown a traditional church built in the 13th century. Thatched cottages looked quaint and soon we heard the drumming of a male SYRIAN WOODPECKER. We spotted it coming in and out of a nest hole with the male and female taking turns to feed the young. A cracking male BLACK REDSTART sat atop a weather vane allowing good photographic opportunities whilst common species were seen such as EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE, COMMON STARLING and a distant singing EUROPEAN SERIN. We were then off towards our base but along the way stopped off at a woodland for a brief stroll. EUROPEAN NUTHATCH and SHORT-TOED TREECREEPERS were seen plus SPOTTED FLYCATCHERS, whilst the songs of COMMON CHAFFINCH, SONG THRUSH and EUROPEAN ROBIN emanated from the woodland. -

In surviving populations, Karner blue butterflies have a facultative mutualism with ants that could be critically important to their survival where their populations are threatened by habitat loss or disturbance. In this study, we investigated the effects of ants, wild blue lupine population status (native or restored), and fire on adult Karner blue butterfly abundance http://ee.oxfordjournals.org/ at the Concord Pine Barrens, NH, USA. Ant frequency (the number of times we collected each ant species in our pitfall traps) was higher in restored than native lupine treatments regardless of burn status during both Karner blue butterfly broods, and the trend was statistically significant during the second brood. We observed a posi- tive relationship between adult Karner blue butterfly abundance and ant frequency during the first brood, partic- ularly on native lupine, regardless of burn treatment. During the second brood, adult Karner blue butterfly abun- dance and ant frequency were not significantly correlated in any treatments or their combinations. -

Threats to Australia’s grazing industries by garden plants Abstract This report identifies 281 introduced garden plants and 800 lower priority species that present a significant risk to Australia’s grazing industries should they naturalise. Of the 281 species: • Nearly all have been recorded overseas as agricultural or environmental weeds (or both); • More than one tenth (11%) have been recorded as noxious weeds overseas; • At least one third (33%) are toxic and may harm or even kill livestock; • Almost all have been commercially available in Australia in the last 20 years; • Over two thirds (70%) were still available from Australian nurseries in 2004; • Over two thirds (72%) are not currently recognised as weeds under either State or Commonwealth legislation. -

Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. We all met at the Ferry Terminal and I (Jonathan) handed out the boarding passes and room keys and everyone got themselves sorted out for the journey. It had been warm in Aberdeen all day, with lots of sunshine. To a Scot this was hot weather! We took to the deck on our departure and started populating the wildlife list with the usual seabirds plus and unexpected flock of Kittiwakes inside the harbour wall. There were lots of Eider Ducks on the sea wall. Aberdeen Harbour is well known for its resident Bottle-nose Dolphins and they did not disappoint with two breaching just as we left the harbour. Everyone got a sighting, as they were active and in view for several minutes, as did most of the top deck. As we headed off-shore we saw lots of auks and some Gannets. After all this excitement we headed downstairs for some sustenance and then later retired to the bar, where Jonathan gave an overview of the trip and what we were likely to see, and we all made our introductions. -

Observations on their use and efficacy significantly contribute to the disclosure of their therapeutic properties. Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi is an aromatic herb with a mint-oregano flavor, used in the Mediterranean areas as a traditional medicine. It has an extensive range of biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-ulcer and insecticidal properties. This study aims to review the scientific findings and research reported to date on Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi that prove many of the remarkable various biological actions, effects and some uses of this species as a source of bioactive natural compounds. On the other hand, pulegone, the major chemical constituent of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi essential oil, has been reported to exhibit numerous bioactivities in cells and animals. Thus, this integrated overview also surveys and interprets the present knowledge of chemistry and analysis of this oxygenated monoterpene, as well as its beneficial bioactivities.
