King (son of ) lusted after his step-brother’s wife, Herodius. Herodius was bored with her husband, and encouraged Herod’s affection. It was against Jewish law for Herodius to divorce her husband, but she did it anyway, and married Herod Antipas. openly criticized their actions, and focused much of his criticism on Herodius.

Unlike his father, Herod Antipas was a passive leader, and simply ignored John’s criticism. Herod believed John to be a holy man and was afraid to kill him, but was willing to hold John in prison. Herodius’ daughter, Salome (now Herod’s stepdaughter) was not so patient. She was young (around 16) and beautiful. Herod was extremely attracted to Salome, and she knew it. Worried that John the Baptist’s public criticism would destroy her mother, Salome devised a plan. It is not certain, but widely believed, that Herod and Herodius were part of the plan from the beginning.

On the night of his birthday, Herodius & Herod threw a huge party. Salome asked to dance for the King and his courtiers. She danced veryseductively, drawing Herod deeper into her plan. Salome’s dancing pleased Herod so much that he told her to ask for anything she wished and he would grant it. Salome turned to her mother and asked, “’What shall I ask?’ And she said, ‘The head of John the bap- tizer.’ And she came immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, ‘I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.’” :24-25. The New Oxford Annotated Bible Revised Standard Version.

Herod did not want to break his word to Salome in front of his guests. He ordered a soldier to be- head John in prison. The soldier returned to the party with John’s head on a platter. Herod gave the platter to Salome, who in turn, gave the head to her mother.
