January JANUARY Heartwood House News 2 0 2 0 Special Events Epiphany - The Feast of The Three Kings Epiphany is celebrated 12 days after Christmas on the sixth of January and is the time when Christians remember The Wise Men (also Wine & Cheese called The Three Kings) who visited Jesus.

Friday, Jan 3 Epiphany is also when some churches 3:30 PM remember when Jesus was baptized, when he was about 30, and started to teach people about God. Epiphany means 'revelation' and both the visit of The Wise Men and his baptism are important times when Jesus was 'revealed' to be very important.

Some churches use Epiphany to celebrate and remember both the visit of The Wise Men and Jesus's Baptism! Visit From Lucille Ball Thursday, Jan 16 Epiphany is mainly celebrated by Catholics and Orthodox Christians. It is a big and important festival in Spain, where it is also known as 'The Festival of The Three 2:00 PM Magic Kings' - 'Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Mages', and is when Spanish and some other Catholic children receive their presents - as they are delivered by The Three Kings!

There are similar traditions in Mexico where Epiphany is known as 'El Dia de los Reyes' (the day of The Three Kings). It is traditional to eat a special cake called 'Rosca de Reyes' (Three Kings Cake). A figure of Baby Jesus is hidden inside the Bus Outing cake. Whoever has The Baby Jesus in their piece of cake is the 'Godparent' of Jesus to North Grand Cinema for that year. Friday, Jan 17 At Epiphany in Belgium, children dress up as The Three Wise Men and go from door to door to sing songs and people give them money or sweets, kind of like trick-

or-treating on Halloween. Children in Poland also go out singing on Epiphany.

In Ireland, Epiphany is also sometimes called 'Nollaig na mBean' or Women's Christmas. Traditionally the women get the day off and men do the housework and cooking! It is becoming more Snack Crate: Italy popular and many Irish women now get together on the Sunday nearest Epiphany and have tea and cakes! Wednesday, Jan 22 Epiphany Eve marks the end of the traditional Christmas 2:30 PM celebrations and is the time when you are meant to take Christmas decorations down.

Even as our cloudy fancies take Suddenly shape in some divine expression, Even as the troubled heart doth make In the white countenance confession, The troubled sky reveals The grief it feels.

This is the poem of the air, Slowly in silent syllables recorded; This is the secret of despair, Long in its cloudy bosom hoarded, Now whispered and revealed To wood and field. “Best Books of 2019” Program Presented by Ames Public Library Please join us on Wednesday, January 8 at 2:30pm in Mulberry for this engaging and educational program presented by Megan Klein-Hewett, Adult Services Librarian from the Ames Public Library.
