A regizat filme cu: Peter Lorre (The Mask of Dimitrios, 1944), Joan Crawford, John Garfield (Humoresque, 1946), Clifton Web, Barbara Stanwyck (Titanic, 1953), Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacal (How to marry a millionaire, 1953), Maurice Chevalier, Angie Dickinson (Jessica, 1962) şi mulţi alţii. Str. • Steinhart Runaway Hollywood Chapter3
Chapter 3 Lumière, Camera, Azione! the personnel and practices of hollywood’s mode of international production as hollywood filmmakers gained more experience abroad over the years, they devised various production strategies that could be shared with one another. A case in point: in May 1961, Vincente Minnelli was preparing the production of Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), part of which he planned to shoot in Rome. Hollywood flmmaker Jean Negulesco communicated with Minnelli, ofering some advice on work- ing in Italy, where Negulesco had directed portions of Tree Coins in the Fountain (1954) and Boy on a Dolphin (1957) and at the time was producing his next flm, Jessica (1962): I would say that the most difcult and the most important condition of mak- ing a picture in Italy is to adapt yourself to their spirit, to their way of life, to their way of working. A small example: Tis happened to me on location. As I arrive on the set and everything is ready to be done at 9 o’clock—the people are having cofee. Now, your assistant also is having cofee—and if you are foolish enough to start to shout and saying you want to work, right away you’ll have an unhappy crew and not the cooperation needed for the picture. But if you have cofee with them, they will work for you with no time limit or no extra expense.1 Negulesco’s letter underscores a key lesson that Hollywood moviemakers learned overseas when confronted with diferent working hours, production practices, and cultural customs.

Summary Balkan Aristocrats and Villains in Western and American Cinema The Balkan Peninsula have got rarely the attention of Western Europeans and Americans writers and film- directors. Therefore, the image of this area remains mostly conventional one. Besides the screen adaptation of cer- tain literary works, motivations of making films about the Balkans relate to share some local events and political figures, as well as updating of adventures and sentimental writings („romances”, „romanţuri”). In the filmmakers’ attention still persists the curiosity to discover of an exotic region and to use the negative reputation of the area in a matter of suspense. In the article was taken in the viewfinder the spectrum of the Western and American film, as well the genuistic and stylistic diversity.

  • Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release June 1990 Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965 July 1 - September 11, 1990 This summer, The Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to Twentieth Century Fox with a retrospective of over ninety films made between 1935 and 1965. Opening on July 1, 1990, TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX: 1935-1965 traces three key decades in the history of the studio, celebrating the talents of the artists on both sides of the cameras who shaped this period. The exhibition continues through September 11. Formed in 1915, the Fox Film Corporation merged in 1935 with the much younger Twentieth Century to launch a major new studio. Under the supervision of Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century Fox developed a new house style, emphasizing epic biographies such as John Ford's The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) and Allan Dwan's Suez (1938) and snappy urban pictures such as Sidney Lanfield's Hake Up and Live (1937) and Roy Del Ruth's Thanks a Million (1935). The studio also featured such fresh screen personalities as Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Shirley Temple. From this time on, the studio masterfully anticipated and shaped the tastes of the movie-going public. During World War II, Twentieth Century Fox made its mark with a series of exuberant Technicolor musicals featuring such actresses as Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. After the war, the studio shifted focus and began to highlight other genres including films noirs such as Edmund Goulding's Nightmare Alley (1947) and Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), wry satirical films such as Joseph L.

  • Jean Negulesco, Un Pictor Ignorat În România De Ieri Şi De Astăzi
JEAN NEGULESCO, UN PICTOR IGNORAT ÎN ROMÂNIA DE IERI ŞI DE ASTĂZI de MANUELA CERNAT Abstract Rated among the Top Ten directors in the Hollywood golden decades 1940-1950, American filmmaker of Romanian origin Jean Negulesco was also a gifted painter. Yet, this chapter of his creative activity is little known in Romania and abroad even though his works are exhibited in some major European and American Museums. Entering the Bucharest Painting Academy in 1919, he soon left for Paris where he attended both the Académie Julian and La Grande Chaumière classes. In December 1923 he opened his first personal exhibition in Bucharest, followed by a Paris one in 1926, warmly received by the critics. Moving to the United States, he got the generous support of Duncan Phillips and soon opened a painting school which proved very successful. Despite the economic crisis, his first exhibitions in Washington, Seattle and on the West Coast were successful both from an artistic and financial point of view. They paved his way to Hollywood where his renown of portraitist inspired Greta Garbo to open for him the gates of the Los Angeles Gotha. But it is the French art historian Elie Faure who pushed the young painter to enter the film industry. In the early forties, fully exploiting the cultural richness accumulated in Bucharest and Paris during his painting studies, Jean Negulesco became one of the “most European” American filmmakers, celebrated for the sophisticated visual style of his movies. Keywords: Jean Negulesco, famous Hollywood filmmaker, painter, rediscover, reevaluation, Romanian origin, early painting career, personal painting exhibitions, Bucharest, Paris, Washingon, art collections, art museums, memories, correspondence.

  • IDA LUPINO, FILMMAKER and ACTRESS February 1 - March 9, 1991
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release January 1991 HARD, FAST, AND BEAUTIFUL--IDA LUPINO, FILMMAKER AND ACTRESS February 1 - March 9, 1991 A retrospective of films tracing the achievements of Ida Lupino, one of the more distinctive actresses of the American screen during the 1940s and 1950s, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on February 1, 1991. Although primarily known as an actress, Ida Lupino has also had a singular career behind the cameras. At a time when filmmaking in Hollywood was not open to women, Lupino wrote, directed, and produced a series of low-budget films and later became a prolific television director. HARD, FAST, AND BEAUTIFUL — IDA LUPINO, FILMMAKER AND ACTRESS, continuing through March 9, presents twelve features in which Lupino starred, six films she directed, and a selection of her television work. This exhibition highlights some of Lupino's finest performances, with such memorable films as Raoul Walsh's psychological portrait of a gangster High Sierra (1941), and Jean Negulesco's melodrama Road House (1948). Also included are Vincent Sherman's The Hard Hay (1942), about a bitterly ambitious woman who pushes her sister to stardom, and Walsh's The Man I Love (1946), the story of a nightclub singer who is pursued by a mobster. Born in London in 1918 to a British theatrical family, Lupino began to play young sophisticates at age fourteen. After moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s, she matured into an actress of rare feeling and intensity during the 1940s. In 1948 Lupino and her then husband, Collier Young, founded Emerald Films, which was later known as The Filmakers.
