For more than 30 years, the Audio isual Center hasmaintained a comprehensive library of educational films. Many of thetitles which were originally added for informationalor instructional purposes arc now recognized as interesting and valuable for film study. To identifythese films, we conducted a careful catalog search and extensive screenings. The filmswe have included represent experimental films, film classics, historically interesting films, works of recognized directors, and films whichare models of film techniques. Also, this catalog describesrecent film acqui- sitionsreflecting IndianaUniversily's growing commitment to film study. These additions include feature filmexcerpts from the Teaching Fitm Custodians collection representing the work of recognized Ilollywood directors as wellas a number of films selected expressly for the purpose of film study. Lynn Sandberg Pat Wet more AudioVisual Center Indiana University 4 Film Study in the UniversityAlthough film scholarship as .m independent activity has flourished for more than half a century, the ini:oduction of film study iiito colleges and unicersities is a very recent development. Until little more than a decade ago, the motion picture was considered worthy of academic attention only when it took the form of educational, instructional, or documen- tary filmthat is, when, for the most part, it served as illustrative material for another discipline. Cinema in all its other fOrms was regarded merely as "entertainment" or "propaganda," and as such it could have no place in the curriculum as a subject for serious study. This attitudeis rapidly disappearing. Students who once would have dreamed of being creative writers'now set their sights on becoming tomorrow's filmdirectors, screenwriters, and movie critics. Serious responses to their growing preoccupation with film in all its manifold aspects are now visibly reflected in the film courses and film departments that arc prpliferating (loin coast to coast, in the countless books and journals on [din that arc pouring from the presses, and in the present catalog which reveals a major university's serious commitment to providing a resource for the study of film as film. The resource is not cast; its richness is in its variety. Through it the teacher and the student can explore cinema as social expression (or reflection), as political statement, or as the embodiment of moral and artisticvisions. They can embark on the ,study ofEllin adaptation and the study of film history. In brief, they can dis- cover some of the inexhaustible artistic potentialities of cinema and its relationships to other arts and to a wide complex of social and political activities. Most people merely look at movies, but the sensitive teacher will be able to use any of the films in the collection to teach his students how to see film, how to interpret what they sec and how to criticize what they interpret. The cmema is the only new art our century has created. Film Study in the High SchoolSecondary-school teachers who truly want to communicate with students employ visual language. "Communicate with"isasignificantlydifferent posture than "teach to." Through film, teachers and students share experience-a peer relationship in which ideas can comfortably be analyzed, understood, evaluated. As with any language, one must master fundamentals before presuming to interpret and judge. This is almost more easily done 2 5 than said with film;the fundamentals are simple,and enjoyable. Twenty to thirty class hours of screenings and discussionsare more than adequate for the purpose. Once basicsare acquired, films can be used in 211 humanities classrooms forinformation, inspiration, ,stimulation. Those who have adapted filmusage to traditional humanities courses Fthd that with film they ,W becomebetter teachers; (b) convey more information to more students; (c) inspiregreater interest in the-subject; (d) discover and explore ideas; (e)stimulate peer interaction, discussion, and multi-level communication; and (f)conveytheintoxicatiN concept of learningas pleasure. There arc documentariesabout vital issues, important personalities, and exotic 'daces.There are fascinating experimental and avant-garde rains. Therearc thought- provoking films involving moral and ethicalquestions. The catalog is unique inits rich variety of feature film excerpts,many of which are of inter-disciplinaryinterest. This means that one rental can easily serve two ormore classes and may encourage joint screenings and discussions. New, pictorial media have revolutionized modesof perception and thought; and use of media is now revolutionizingeducational patterns everywhere. Thompson 2006 Edited By Robyn Goforth (2009), Tyler Eastman (2012) PREFACE The American Heritage Center holdings include a wealth of material on women's issues as well as numerous collections from women who gained prominence in national and regional affairs. The AHC, part of the University of Wyoming (the only university in the "Equality State") continues a long tradition of collecting significant materials in these areas. The first great collector of materials at the University, Dr. Grace Raymond Hebard, was herself an important figure in the national suffrage movement, as materials in her collection indicate. Hebard's successors continued such accessions, even at times when many other repositories were focusing their attentions on "the great men." For instance, they collected diaries of Oregon Trail travelers and accounts of life when Wyoming was even more of a frontier than it is today. Another woman, Lola Homsher, was the first formally designated University archivist and her efforts to gain materials from and about women accelerated during the service of Dean Krakel, Dr. Gene Gressley, and present director Dr. Michael Devine. As a result of this work, the AHC collections now contain the papers of pioneering women in the fields of journalism, film, environmental activism, literature, and politics, among other endeavors.

    3 “The Spice of the Program” Educational Pictures and the Small-Town Audience “What the hell’s educational about a comedy?” asked slapstick producer Jack White in an interview toward the end of his life. “Something that was very offen- sive to me,” he continued, “was [the slogan] . ‘This is an Educational Comedy.’ There’s no such thing as educating yourself with a comedy. It’s a stupid name.”1 The object of White’s ire? The company for which he had produced and directed two- reel shorts for over a decade—the comedy distributor with the most unlikely of names: Educational Pictures. The company had been formed in 1915 as the Educational Films Corporation by real-estate man Earle W. Hammons, with the intent indicated by its name: to provide educational subjects for school, church, and other nontheatrical pur- poses. But by the late 1910s Hammons had realized little profit from this idea and began to target the commercial field, setting in motion a process of expan- sion that would see Educational become the dominant short-comedy distributor of the late silent era. “It did not take me long to find out that the demand [for educational films] did not exist and that we could not survive by doing that alone,” Hammons later recalled.2 As early as the 1918–1919 season, Educational had begun to diversify its product lines, adding Happy Hooligan and Silk Hat Harry cartoons to its weekly program of travelogues and informational sub- jects.3 In April 1920, Hammons signed director Jack White and comedian Lloyd Hamilton from Fox’s Sunshine Comedies to produce two-reel comedies under the brand name Mermaid Comedies, and began immediately taking further strides into the comedy market.4 The program for Educational’s 1920–1921 season, which represented the company’s first year of general commercial release, included four comedy series: the Mermaids, produced by White; C.

    Icons are all around us, and often we don’t even question it. So ingrained is their power their image becomes synonymous with what they represent. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French, has come to represent a cultural welcome, freedom from oppression. After thousands of immigrants arrivals and generations of hardship, the sighting of the Statue in New York harbor has become iconic. Fifteen minutes of fame does not an icon make. An icon requires survival of a multistep process, which pushes the image to its limits. Firstly, an icon needs to have common roots, at least one foot among the masses. This is what allows the spectator to take ownership and feel connected and makes them a viable icon. An icon cannot be a representative of a group if it is not one of what it stands for. Secondly, the icon while remaining at its base “common”, must have an exceptional, unique qualtiy whic makes it the best example of something. It is the fastest, the highest, or the furthest. After it gains popularity because of these two first qualities, it then must stand a rigorous litany of deconstruction, digestion, and interrogation, before it can reach the fourth phase of being praised, lauded and embraced as the quintessential one of its kind. The irony is that once it claims icon status, all that made it so interesting to begin with has been stripped away. It has been so contorted, manipulated as to be simplified for the masses that only that one outstanding unique quality remains, and everything else is ignored.
