A case in point: in May 1961, Vincente Minnelli was preparing the production of Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), part of which he planned to shoot in Rome. Hollywood flmmaker Jean Negulesco communicated with Minnelli, ofering some advice on work- ing in Italy, where Negulesco had directed portions of Tree Coins in the Fountain (1954) and Boy on a Dolphin (1957) and at the time was producing his next flm, Jessica (1962): I would say that the most difcult and the most important condition of mak- ing a picture in Italy is to adapt yourself to their spirit, to their way of life, to their way of working. A small example: Tis happened to me on location. As I arrive on the set and everything is ready to be done at 9 o’clock—the people are having cofee. Now, your assistant also is having cofee—and if you are foolish enough to start to shout and saying you want to work, right away you’ll have an unhappy crew and not the cooperation needed for the picture. But if you have cofee with them, they will work for you with no time limit or no extra expense.1 Negulesco’s letter underscores a key lesson that Hollywood moviemakers learned overseas when confronted with diferent working hours, production practices, and cultural customs. -

RECOMMENDED READING LIST 1 DEAR PARENTS, HOME SCHOOL TEACHERS Kolbe’s Recommended Reading List began over twenty years ago with a list given to the Kolbe founders by the eminent classical scholar Dr. John Senior. In the intervening years it has been augmented by parents, teachers, and students, adding numerous titles in nonfiction as well as fiction. It has been adopted by schools and used by teachers and parents as a reliable guide to good reading material. With this enhanced version, it is necessary to thank Mrs. Maria Skrobola for her generous additions and help. This compilation of reading materials represents some of the best writings in prose and poetry, either in their original English language or in translation. In recommending materials for your student, caution and prudence must be exercised. The suitability of a book often varies according to the age and maturity of the student. The books listed in the “Kindergarten and Under” catergory are suitable to be read to your child, as most children this age are unable to read themselves. Furthermore, although this list provides reference material for the student outside of the classroom curriculum, consultation with a teacher or parent as to the suitability of a title is certainly expected of the student. An author’s name appearing on our list does not automatically imply our full endorsement of all the works by the author; nor does it suggest that the author’s personal lifestyle, religious convictions or political viewpoint are in full accord with our academic criteria and moral vision. The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release June 1990 Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965 July 1 - September 11, 1990 This summer, The Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to Twentieth Century Fox with a retrospective of over ninety films made between 1935 and 1965. Opening on July 1, 1990, TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX: 1935-1965 traces three key decades in the history of the studio, celebrating the talents of the artists on both sides of the cameras who shaped this period. The exhibition continues through September 11. Formed in 1915, the Fox Film Corporation merged in 1935 with the much younger Twentieth Century to launch a major new studio. Under the supervision of Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century Fox developed a new house style, emphasizing epic biographies such as John Ford's The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) and Allan Dwan's Suez (1938) and snappy urban pictures such as Sidney Lanfield's Hake Up and Live (1937) and Roy Del Ruth's Thanks a Million (1935). The studio also featured such fresh screen personalities as Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Shirley Temple. From this time on, the studio masterfully anticipated and shaped the tastes of the movie-going public. During World War II, Twentieth Century Fox made its mark with a series of exuberant Technicolor musicals featuring such actresses as Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. After the war, the studio shifted focus and began to highlight other genres including films noirs such as Edmund Goulding's Nightmare Alley (1947) and Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), wry satirical films such as Joseph L.
