Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered only to baptized and chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church, allToday's are invited to receive Readings the Antidoron (bless: ed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. Verse: Bless God in the congregations. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. The Gospel According to Matthew 5:14-19 The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." 2 Ἐκ τοῦ Κατὰ Ματθαῖον 5:14-19 Εὐαγγελίου τὸ Ἀνάγνωσμα Εἶπεν ὁ Κὐριος τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ μαθηταῖς· ῾Υμεῖς ἐστε τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου. οὐ δύναται πόλις κρυβῆναι ἐπάνω ὄρους κειμένη· οὐδὲ καίουσι λύχνον καὶ τιθέασι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον, ἀλλ᾿ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν, καὶ λάμπει πᾶσι τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ. οὕτω λαμψάτω τὸ φῶς ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὅπως ἴδωσιν ὑμῶν τὰ καλὰ ἔργα καὶ δοξάσωσι τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. Thank you very much. _____________________________________________________________________________________ St. Julia, Virgin-Martyr, at Carthage Commemorated today on July 16 The Virgin Martyr Julia was born in Carthage in the fifth century to a Christian family. While still a girl, the Persians captured her, carrying her off to Syria and selling her into slavery. Fulfilling the Christian commandments, St. Julia faithfully served her master. She preserved her purity, kept the fasts and prayed to God. No amount of urging by her pagan master could turn her to idolatry. One day, the master set off to Gaul and took St. Julia with him. Along the way, the ship stopped at the island of Corsica, and the master decided to take part in a pagan festival. However, Julia refused to join him and remained on the ship. The Corsicans plied the merchant and his companions with wine, and when they had fallen into a drunken sleep, they took Julia from the ship. St. Julia was not afraid to tell the Corsicans that she was a Christian, and the savage pagans crucified her. An angel of the Lord reported the death of St. Julia to the monks of a nearby monastery. They took her body and buried it in a church in the monastery. In 763, the relics of St. Julia were transferred to a women’s monastery in the city of Breschia. 5 Attic Treasures Yard Sale Dear Fellow Parishioners, Friends and Neighbors, Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, is holding an Attic Treasures and Yard Sale on Saturday, September 9th, 2017.     Series: Salt and Light: God’s Vision for the Church Sermon: The Devotion of the Church Scripture: Titus 3:8-15 (ESV) Teacher: Jeff Norris Date: January 31, 2021 The dominant theme in Titus is good works … "Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works." Titus 2:7 "…who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works." Titus 2:14 "Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work." Titus 3:1 "The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works." Titus 3:8 "And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful." Titus 3:14 "One of the problems in the Cretan church is that they had assimilated their ideas about Jesus, the Christian God, to their ideas about their Greek gods…specifically Zeus, their chief god. Cretan people claimed that Zeus was born on their island and they loved to tell stories and mythologies about Zeus's underhanded character. He would seduce women and lie to get his way. So, Paul wants to very clear: the God revealed through Jesus is totally different than Zeus. His basic character are faithfulness and truth. Which means the Christian way of life will be about truth also."     Ephesians 6:21-24 Ephesians 6:21 – “So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything.” 1. Tychicus a. Tychicus was from the province of Asia (Acts ) b. Tychicus may have been from Ephesus in Asia Minor, but he is not mentioned in Luke’s account of Ephesus in Acts 19 and is not mentioned in the account of the sea voyage to Rome. c. Since Tychicus is in Rome around 61-62 AD while Paul is living under house arrest in Rome (60-62 AD) it would appear that Tychicus had traveled from Ephesus (or, Asia Minor) to Rome to see Paul. d. Tychicus is now returning to Ephesus and then to Colossae with these three letters (maybe, four letters or more): i. Ephesians ii. Colossae (Col. 4:7) iii. Philemon iv. (Laodicea, Col. 4:16) e. Tychicus will (has been) representing Paul in Asia Minor in Ephesus, Colossae and the other churches. It is likely that the Ephesian letter is a circular letter. f. After this: i. Tychicus is with Paul in Corinth when Paul writes Titus in Crete. Tychicus is mentioned as a possible replacement (along with Artemas) in Crete for Titus - Titus 3:12 – “When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.” ii. Tychicus had been with Paul in Rome during his second and final imprisonment in 67 AD before winter when Paul writes Timothy in Ephesus in 2 Timothy 4:12 – “Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.” g.

    Sunday of Holy Myrrhbearing Women (3rd after Pascha) This Sunday the church services are taken from the contents of the Gospel narration about the appearance of the risen Lord to the Myrrhbearing women. This all-joyful appearance of the Lord was the first after His rising from the grave and consequently it is glorified by the Church at the present time as the undoubted proof of His resurrection. Among the Myrrhbearers mentioned in the Gospel are the following: Mary Magdalene (Jul. 22), Mary Cleopas or James (May 23), Salome (3 Aug.), Johanna (Jun. 27), Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus (Jun. 4, Mar. 18) and Susanna (see Lk. 8:3; she is not mentioned in the Menologion). Besides these seven Myrrhbearing women, "there were also others, very many others, who served Christ and His disciples out of their means". The Holy Myrrhbearing Women and the circumstance of the appearance of the risen Lord to them are glorified in the stichera and troparia of the Canon for the third Sunday after Pascha and on all the days of this week and consequently it is called the Sunday of the Myrrhbearing Women1. Besides the Holy Myrrhbearers, the church hymns glorify Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, the secret disciples of the Savior on this present Sunday2. According to the explanation of the Synaxarion, the Holy Women Myrrhbearers were "the first to truthfully bear witness to the Resurrection, Joseph and Nicodemus to the burial, but this is the most important and best kept of our teachings. This is the reason that they are the true witnesses of the burial together with the women, who have seen the Resurrection, and it was established to celebrate them after the first verification of Thomas, which came before because it happened in eight days as the holy evangelist said".
