Foley lights up Flames Fresh from a foray in the US, CABL guard Jess Foley is bringing new experience into the Norwood team

After a stellar start to the year winning the WNBL with Adelaide Lightning, Norwood guard Jess Foley has returned to the Flames CABL women’s team, scoring more than 26 points in each of her past five games. The team will need all of Jess’s reinvigorated shooting power, as it is placed 6th on the ladder after Round 15, with seven wins and eight losses. The 182cm guard is in fine form, though, consistently scoring highly, with a game- high 34 points in the most recent match against Sturt. Jess, 25, is fresh from the US, where she spent nearly a month trialling for the WNBA with the Connecticut Suns. The disappointment of being a late cut from the deep, 24-player squad has been balanced by what was overall a great experience, in which she enjoyed strong competition and learned more about “the American style of basketball”. Pressed on what that means, Jess says: “They pigeonhole players there. In Australia players are more versatile. In the US you specialise, you’re a shooter or whatever. People are very good at what they do, but they’re probably not as versatile. I’ll be a bit better prepared next time.” The 182cm guard from Wodonga also “ In Australia players made the first squads for the Australian are more versatile. Olympics team, the Opals, who will defend their championship title in Beijing In the US you shortly. Luckily for the Norwood ABL specialise” team, Jess won’t be on that tour, and will instead try and help the Flames women into the finals here. Mid-placed Jess Foley in action on the ladder, the Flames need a strong Photographer Damrob run home to make it into the finals. With Jess on board, the team knocked off ladder-leaders North Adelaide recently, so there’s every chance the women can finish strongly. Apart from honing her skills and fitness, Jess is also doing some work looking after youth in Government care. She is also prepared to coach Club juniors.
