Adelaide Lightning Strikes Deal for Animals Empathy for Underdogs Prompts Elite Basketballers to Champion RSPCA Cause Embargoed MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 22 October 2019 ADELAIDE, SA Adelaide Lightning strikes deal for animals Empathy for underdogs prompts elite basketballers to champion RSPCA cause Adelaide’s professional women’s basketball team knows what it means to struggle to survive, having overcome multiple hurdles since its formation 26 years ago. Defying the odds, the team were runners-up in February’s Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) grand final and has set its sight on taking out this season’s grand final in March. Coming off a win last Friday against Townsville Fire, the team now wants to share its improving fortunes off-court to help animals that have also experienced hard times. According to Adelaide Lightning General Manager Mandy Hedderwick, the team’s decision to partner with RSPCA South Australia follows a survey of the players about community engagement options. “We did a whip around to see what ideas the girls had for supporting their community, and helping animals was a common theme,” Ms Hedderwick said. The team’s agreed to donate a percent of ticket sales from its December 6 match against Perth Lynx towards the care of animals at RSPCA South Australia’s Lonsdale shelter. The Friday night match, being held at Adelaide Lightning’s home stadium, Titanium Security Arena in Findon, is expected to draw a large crowd as the competition nears the March grand finals. Before the match begins, spectators will have the opportunity to take part in the Lightning local pop-up market, with all products on the day aimed towards pets. (Tickets to the match can be purchased here.) This afternoon, all 14 team members will converge at RSPCA South Australia’s Lonsdale shelter to meet some of the animals currently in care. Among them will be star recruit Crystal Langhorne, recently arrived from the US and a key player in Seattle Storm’s Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) championship win last year. Media Opportunity Tuesday Oct 22 at 1.45pm RSPCA South Australia’s animal shelter - 25 Meyer Rd, Lonsdale Adelaide Lightning players meet RSCPA SA staff and volunteers, and some animals currently in care. • Media Release – WNBL Perth Lynx
MEDIA RELEASE JESSIE EDWARDS JOINS WAVE OF RETURNING PLAYERS TO PERTH LYNX The Perth Lynx have bolstered their frontcourt stocks, welcoming home Jessie Edwards for WNBL season 2020/21. After being a standout junior in Western Australia, including being named the West Coast Waves Rookie of the Year in 2013/14, Edwards moved to the University of Minnesota. She led the Gophers in blocks in each of her three seasons and finished her College career ranked sixth all-time at Minnesota in blocks and ninth for offensive rebounds. Lynx Head Coach Ryan Petrik was glad to be able to welcome Edwards back to WA, especially after seeing her perform strongly for the Adelaide Lightning in pre-season games against the Lynx last season. “Jessie was someone we were really keen to get back home after she had an opportunity interstate last season. She’s a very good rebounder and being a bit bigger and more mobile than people expect, she’s someone who will really compliment Garbin and Allen.” Edwards was rapt with the opportunity to return to Perth and looking forward to seizing the opportunity presented by a season without imports. “To earn a roster spot in Perth was always a long-term goal, but now it’s about making sure I seize the opportunity with both hands. I’ve played against a lot of the girls on the roster so it’s exciting to be able to play with them now, especially in front of my family and friends.” Edwards will play for the Kalamunda Eastern Suns in the West Coast Classic, joining a number of players on the Lynx roster who will be competing in the event.

  • Game Day Program Semi-Final 1
2018-19 WNBL Semi-final 1 v FRIDAY 25 JANUARY 6 PM DOORS OPEN 7 PM TIP-OFF AIS ARENA Round 15 Recap The final round of the regular season turned out to be more of a thriller than expected, with three out of the top four teams having to go to overtime. For the UC Capitals, a double overtime put the team’s winning streak at risk as Bendigo Spirit put everything on the line for the final game of WNBL19. But Marianna Tolo (27 points, 10 rebounds) and Kelsey Griffin (24 points, 20 rebounds stepped up to get the UC Capitals over the line. UC Capitals head coach, Paul Goriss, said that the close call was a great way to prepare the team for finals. “We haven’t been that behind in the last ten weeks, so having a game where we had to fight harder than what we’ve been used to was great. Having a double overtime game is something we hadn’t had either, so there were great learning outcomes for us heading into finals,” said Goriss. The match against Bendigo was significant in other ways for UC Capitals star, Kelly Wilson, who received her WNBL life membership. Wilson has made her mark in the 2018/19 WNBL season, climbing up to sixth on the all-time games played list and third for all-time assists. Third and fourth place was also determined after a thrilling match between the Perth Lynx and Adelaide Lightning. As the Lynx fell one point short of a win after going to overtime, they have fallen to fourth on the ladder and will therefore be the UC Capitals’ opponent for the semi-finals.

  • The Willetton Basketball Association Sponsorship Proposal 2008
TThehe WWillettonilletton BasketballBasketball AAssociationssociation SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL 2008 INTRODUCTION Allow us to introduce an extraordinary exposure and promotional opportunity for your business in one of Perth’s strongest demographic regions – a large part of Perth’s southern suburbs. Suburbs serviced by the Willetton basketball stadium have – • Strong consumer spending habits • A large proportion of youthful families • Many residents who are prominent in middle and senior management in Perth’s corporate, commercial and industrial sectors. With basketball experiencing a tremendous resurgence of interest, can you afford not to consider this opportunity to be involved with one of WA’s most successful basketball organisations and its captive patrons? While the emphasis is around our senior men’s and women’s involvement in the State Basketball League (SBL) during winter, our sponsorship package is designed to deliver stronger and broader exposure throughout the year, during the junior and senior competitions as well. We recognise that unless we achieve benefits for our sponsors as well as for our stadium, sponsorships will not develop into long-term relationships. This is a cornerstone of our sponsorship policy, along with our philosophy of having exclusive company rights (unless agreed otherwise by incumbent sponsors) above a certain level of sponsorship. Please read on to learn more about our organisation and discover how we would jointly benefit from your participation in our stadium’s sponsorship programme. ASSOCIATION PROFILE HISTORY The Willetton Basketball Association (“WBA”) is one of the most successful and professionally operated basketball associations in Western Australia and is the envy of many other centres throughout the State. The association is centred at the Willetton Basketball Stadium, Burrendah Boulevard, Willetton (immediately opposite Southlands Shopping Centre).
