The key elements of this account are the Angaité’s notions and practices on alterity, storytelling and shamanism and how they interplay with one another. I explore the notions of alterity and its counterpart similarity in the context of multiple material transactions in which the Angaité engage both among themselves and with outsiders. I also examine the inseparable socio-moral evaluations attached to such transactions. I show how certain transactions such as exchange or commoditisation do not necessarily conflict with good social relations. Nevertheless, the closest relationships – preferably evoked in kinship terms - are constantly constructed by the combination of several practices including sharing, pooling, cohabitation and companionship and the relational morality that underpins them. This relational morality, I argue, is both inscribed and enacted through the telling of Nanek Any’a narratives –“Old news/events”. I analyze some of these narratives in order to show how the Angaité people interpret the consequences of the colonization of the Chaco. For this I provide an intelligible context for the Nanek Any’a that may otherwise appear contradictory or incomprehensible to a non-Angaité listener. The Angaité’s versions of history compared to the official accounts challenge the simplistic of the Angaité as “acculturated” and a homogenous indigenous people and situate them as main actors of their own lives. Rather than the Angaité being the victims of history the Nanek Any’a emphasize that it was the mistakes and failing of their ancestors in their original encounter with the Paraguayans that resulted in an unbalanced relationship with the latter in socio- economic terms. In addition to this, I describe in the light of the historical processes undergone in the lives of the Angaité, how the shamanic discourses and capacities and Angaité cosmology have changed. I explore how they have constantly incorporated external elements, and thus such shamanic elements pervades contemporary areas of life and interactions that include not only the paradigmatic indigenous shaman, but unusual figures such as pastors, powerful outsiders and leaders.     Shaping Brazil: The Role of International Migration By Ernesto Friedrich Amaral, University of Texas at Austin Wilson Fusco, Universidade Estadual de Campinas June 2005 Since its founding in 1500 by Portuguese colonists, Brazil, the largest country in South America with over 184 million people, has had a strong immigrant presence. The composition of the population has been greatly influenced by distinct waves of immigrants at different moments in history. Much of this immigration, in turn, has been tied to economic factors. Over time, Brazil's governments have encouraged migration flows to fill its vast territory and boost agricultural production. The first wave, coordinated by Portugal, brought Portuguese migrants and slaves from Africa. In recent periods, the government implemented policies to encourage migration from Germany, Italy (mostly at the end of the 19th century) and Japan (mostly at the beginning of the 20th century) to interior areas of the southern states of São Paulo, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. To this day, economic developments such as South America's common market are driving migration, with undocumented immigrants from neighboring countries accounting for the majority of new arrivals. The government has no policies encouraging immigration. At the same time, no policy has been created to discourage or prevent illegal immigrants from entering. Past Migration Flows During Portugal's early rule, immigration to Brazil (from countries other than Portugal) was prohibited because the Portuguese wanted to prevent other European countries from establishing claims to territory. France was unsuccessful in establishing a colony at present-day Rio de Janeiro, and the Dutch were forced tp leave Brazil in 1645 after setting up colonies in the northeastern state of Pernambuco.

    IPP264 Paraguay Community Development Project Indigenous Peoples Development Framework Introduction Public Disclosure Authorized 1. Indigenous Peoples (IP) in Paraguay represent only 1.7% of the total population (about 87,100) people, according to the most recent Indigenous Peoples Census (2002). Notwithstanding, IP, show a higher population growth rate (3.9%) than the average for the national population (2.7%). Therefore, it is possible to expect that the proportion of IP will continue to grow for some time, even though they will continue to be a small proportion of the total population. 2. There are 19 different ethnic groups1 belonging to five linguistic families2, being the most numerous those belonging to the Guarari linguistic family3 (46,000 or 53%), followed by the Maskoy linguistic family groups4 (21,000 or 24%). The four largest IP groups are the Ava-Guarani (13,400 or 15.5%), Mbyá (14,300 or 16.7%), Pâí Tavyterâ (13,100 or 15.2%), and the Nivacle (12,000 or 13.9%). La chica del sur (The Girl from the South, 2012) by José Luis García features the iconic South Korean student activist, Lim Su Kyung, who shocked the world in 1989 by visiting North Korea for the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students, a transgression for which she would be sentenced to five years in a South Korean prison. Una canción coreana (A Korean Song, 2014) by Yael Tujsnaider and Gustavo Tarrío sets out to depict the daily life of Ana Jung, a Korean immigrant in Buenos Aires, as she works on her artistic, business, and familial pursuits. While both women have “vocal” jobs and vocations—Lim is a politician and Jung a singer—the documentaries turn their attention to the ways their voices are silenced by gendered power structures or changing political discourses. This talk will take a close look at how these two Korean women are documented and imagined from the Argentine perspective. Furthermore, given that representations of Koreans in Argentina have been scarce and often negative, this talk also attempts to understand the ‘why’ and ‘why now’ of these two documentaries.

La Secretaría de la Mujer informa sobre Participación y Consulta: dado que la mencionada cartera de Estado, realizó en coordinación con el Instituto Paraguayo del Indígena, junto con las liderezas de las Mujeres Guaraní., una gran reunión de consulta a las mujeres de los seis pueblos de la Nación Guaraní, ocasión en que ellas analizaron en forma participativa su situación y presentaron sus demandas en el texto de una Declaración Pública. La reunión contó con la presencia de la Dra. Mirna Cuninghan, Presidenta del Foro para Cuestiones Indígenas de la ONU. La Secretaría Nacional de Cultura de la Presidencia de la República teniendo en cuenta la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas y las recomendaciones Nro. 18, 25, 38, 47, 49 y 52 de la 10º Sesión del Foro Permanente desarrolló durante el 2011 cuanto sigue: a) II Encuentro de la Nación Guaraní Del 24 al 26 de marzo se llevó a cabo en la comunidad Paî Tavyterâ Jaguati el II Encuentro de la Nación Guaraní. Este Encuentro buscó habilitar un espacio de intercambio de representantes de pueblos vinculados lingüística e históricamente. En la planificación, gestión y desarrollo participaron alrededor de 20 organizaciones pertenecientes de los pueblos guaraní del Paraguay y de delegaciones de comunidades de Argentina, Brasil y Bolivia. Asistieron en el Encuentro aproximadamente 1600 guaraníes.

The Mennonites' success in transforming the Chaco into a ranching powerhouse now undermines their own long-sought solitude, endangers this famous forest and threatens the very existence of indigenous people who've lived in the region since time immemorial. South America’s bi-oceanic highway, which will stretch from the Pacific to the Atlantic – cutting right through Paraguay – is scheduled for completion in 2022.
