GUIDELINES & SCHEDULE: CHAZON AND TISHA B’AV 2019 / 5779

Dear members and friends of The Adams Street Shul,

Because the 9th of Av this year is Shabbat, the fast and almost all the associated laws and customs of Tisha B’Av are deferred until the 10th, this Saturday night/Sunday. However, there are some im- portant laws that come into effect during Shabbat, and so it is important to review them here.

Shabbat The most important fact is that the fast begins at 7:53 PM, during Shabbat itself. Once the fast has begun one can neither eat nor drink. Consequently, it is important to have Seudah Shlishit, the third Shabbat meal, earlier in the evening to ensure that it is finished before the fast begins. One can eat meat and drink wine for this meal, and there is no need to sit on the floor, as is the custom when the last meal before Tisha B’Av is on a weekday. We will daven Mincha at 5:00 PM on Shabbat afernoon (please disregard to time on the yearly schedule) to give everyone a chance to go home and eat before the fast commences. We will daven , followed by Eicha and kinnot, at 8:55 PM. Shabbat is out at 8:35 PM. Once Shabbat is over one should say “Barukh ha-mavdil bein kodesh le-chol” before heading to shul.

Havdalah When Tisha B’Av is observed the day afer Shabbat, Havdalah is split: on Saturday night we make the berakhah of “borei me-orei ha-eish” with a Havdalah candle. Afer Tisha B’Av on Sunday night we make the of “ha-gafen” and “ha-mavdil.” No berakhah on besamim, spices, is made (Shulchan Arukh, O.C. 556:1). “Attah Chonantanu” is still said in the Shemoneh Esrei of Saturday night. If you have received halakhic guidance to not fast this year, Havdalah should be made afer Shab- bat. However, it should not be made on either wine or grape juice – orange juice or coffee should be used. Spices should not be used. The rest of Havdalah is as it always is. If you have received halakhic guidance to break the fast at some point during Sunday, a berakhah on orange juice or coffee should be made, followed by “ha-mavdil.”

Tisha B’Av Once Tisha B’Av begins on Saturday night five special prohibitions take effect (the same prohibitions of Yom Kippur):

1. Eating or drinking 2. Washing 3. Using perfume or other lotions 4. Wearing leather shoes 5. Marital relations1

In addition, several other practices of mourning are observed: we do not greet each other, nor do we learn – save topics related to mourning or the destruction of the Temple. We do not sit on regular chairs or seats from the beginning of Tisha B’Av until chatzot, halakhic midday (see below). On Sunday morning we will daven Shacharit at 8:00 AM, followed by a selection of kinnot with explanations. Tallit and tefillin are not worn during Shacharit. Chatzot is at 12:49 PM on Sunday – afer which time one can sit on regular chairs. All the other prohibitions of Tisha B’Av, however, still apply. I will be giving a special shiur before Mincha at 6:30 PM. Mincha will be at 7:20 PM – during which tallit and tefillin are worn – followed by Maariv. The fast ends at 8:21 PM Usually, the restrictions of are observed until chatzot on the 10th of Av. Because this year Tisha B’Av is observed on the 10th, the restrictions no longer apply once the fast is out – save not eating meat nor drinking wine: one must wait until chatzot on Monday. The one exception is Havdalah, where drinking wine or grape juice is not only permitted but encouraged. For conven- ience, the schedule for the next few days is reproduced on the next page. If you have any questions, please email me ([email protected]). Though Tisha B’Av is a time of sadness we hope that it will one day become a day of joy, as foretold by the prophet Zecha- riah. May his prophecy come true speedily in our days.

I wish you an easy and meaningful fast,

Rabbi Mark Glass

1. Ashkenazic custom is to observe this law during Shabbat itself, unless Friday night is mikveh night. All forms of physical intimacy are prohibited from Friday night through the Sunday night, but other harchakot do not apply on either day.
